| So, I was thinking... we're all EQ nerds, here-right?
I've been pondering life lately. And having just read the latest installment of Final Quest, I'm now pondering it in terms of EQ. So I decided to pose this question to you guys: What character do you identify with and why? I can probably guess for some of you. For example- I imagine (and I could be wrong) that WiseShaman will say Redlance, and Leanan might say Skywise... but I'm curious to get a fuller explanation.
Anyways- I'll start. | |

| Here's me.
I used to want to be Nightfall. (I'm not like Nightfall- but I did want to be when I was a kid). I thought I would grow up to be this strong (physically and emotionally), well balanced woman with some nice, gentle guy by her side. But I didn't end up being like Nightfall- and she wasn't even my favorite character. My favorite character turned out to be Skywise. I like Skywise because he's clever, snarky, but also an intellectual and deeply sensitive. I empathize with him because he's always caught between two ways of being- the Wolfrider way (which is very basic) and the Palace way (which he is more suited for). I relate to this in him because I've always felt I had to choose between myself and my family. I love my family, but I do not relate to those people at all. I don't understand them. I can't be like them- and I can't leave them. Yesterday, my boyfriend asked me why I never left (as in, move to a different city)- and I just realized I couldn't have. Initially, it was because I didn't have a role model- and later it was because I didn't want to. I love them, even though we are different creatures. Even though we drive each other nuts. But.. I'm not really like Skywise either. He's all about his career- and frankly, I'm not that devoted (anymore) to what I do.
Reading this last issue, I finally concluded that, as much as I don't like it, the character I think I'm most similar to is Ember. Ember was the reason I started reading EQ as a kid. At eight years old, I looked and looked for a comic book I could relate to- and I never found one, that is until Ember jumped on her dad's shoulders and asked "did I scare you?" That was me. I was that aggressive tom boy, with a quiet, shy sibling. Well, Ember grew up. And she grew up hot. But despite expectations- she's never quite gotten it together. She was an awkward teenager. She had an awkward (and bumpy) transition into adulthood. Her leadership has been awkward- and she has messed up at times. Even when she herself is making good decisions and leading well, circumstances seem to foil her. She's almost like Nightfall- but not quite. She isn't settling down (like Suntop- or my sister) and having children. And her boyfriend/hubbie/it's complicated is not like sweet, stable Redlance-- he's moody, unstable, has issues with his parents, is introverted and uber sensitive- if also uber-talented. He's likable, but problematic.
Ember, as I read her, has a lot of good qualities. She's basically a strong person. She tries really hard.. But she's always screwing up a little bit. And she's always confused just a little bit. And she's always got it wrong just a little bit. I'd say she's about 80% there. 80% is good and is working for her- and then there's that 20% tripping her up.
And now, she just exercised her right to be pro-choice about kids. So, she's really not going down that road.
Maybe Ember is the stand in for contemporary women- just like Moonshade the conservative woman, and Nightfall the feminist ideal.

| Well, you guessed who I relate to most Luna and if anyone has sifted through any of my works here on this site then you know why... I'll leave it up to you to guess why I like the old Red Hair so much ___________________________________________________ Dubbed Streaking ADD Cowboy of Awesome Sagas by KindredSoul and nibblet | |

| I've always liked Cutter as a character, but I have identified more with Leetah. I'm no healer or anything like that, but I always try to grow as an individual. Leetah as grown into her role. She went from a spoiled, sheltered healer to become a lifemate to Cutter and a mother to Ember and Sunstream. Not to mention the fact, she is as much a leader as Cutter, but in different ways and still remains her gentle self. Plus she enjoys new adventures and experiences, where at one time she didn't want her life to change at all. ___________________________________________________ Reese's, Kashmir's, and Tequila's mommy. | |

| Well, anyone who knows me, knows of my Cutter tattoo. So that sums up the first question.
As for the second part of the question..... I had written out the "why" days ago, but after reading over it I decided it was way too depressing to get into.
Let's just say it's been Cutter giving me strength to survive since I found him over 30 years ago. If it wasn't for him, I'd most likely be dead, or a suicidal drunk and drug addict like my mother

| I was five when started reading Elfquest. I used to identify most with Ember. If you start reading a comic and a character is roughly the same age as you and their age progresses much like yours does then you kind of grow up with that character. The older I have become the more I identify with Joyleaf. She is always a warrior always the voice a reason and a leader even when she doesn't mean to be. She is also a mother to her core. | |

| This is actually quite a tough question. There is some Skywise in me, yes, but I also identify with Kahvi quite a lot, not to mention Yun, who is a balanced product of the combination of Skywise and the Go-Back mindset. And then there is my darkness... which in ElfQuest context wears the face of Winnowill... and then there is that sad, scared voice that could only be Aroree...
I think I started loving Skywise when I saw how he loved the stars... that is definitely something we share. But for many years, I would scold him in my mind, with words similar to Shuna's: Skywise! This is unseemly! I was raised on the word of Threksh't the wrathful! "No maiden shall ye spoil ere she first be thy lawful chattel!"
Of course, my wrathful God bore another name, and I wasn't so much raised in faith as chose faith when it was offered. For a long time, fantasy, ElfQuest included, was my guilty secret, as I witnessed my church friends tear apart Harry Potter books because of the magic they spoke of.
Anyways, I'm not much of a believer anymore, haven't been for a long time, and I can now identify with even more of Skywise's aspects. Let's just say I've had adventures... a lot of them.
And Yun, well, one of the things I love in her is her fascination with water. I am not up-to-date with Final Quest, but I wonder what that might lead into. Anyways, water is definitely 'my element', always has been.
The Go-Backs in general, and Yun and Kahvi in particular, fascinate me because they live practically and take no nonsense from anybody.
But their warrior glory is not for me. I value my life, and fear death. And in fear I find myself looking out of Aroree's eyes.
And her enemy is inside me. For I am mad, and the madness writhes inside me like Winnowill inside Rayek. A chained madness, a mere matter of brain chemical imbalance, sorted out with medication that seems to be working... so far...

| I strongly identify with Suntop / Sunstream since looooong. He has quite the same attitudes as mines ( " I'll be what I'll be! " ), he's a poet, his power consists in feeling magic around and he can link all elves all around... but, far more important in my eyes, he "cuts to the bone", as Rayek charmingly put it. As a child, I was a blonde little boy, quite timid and shy, but also mischievous. A dreamer. A reader. ___________________________________________________

| When I was young, I wanted to be Leetah. I wanted to touch people and heal them. I thought about being a doctor, briefly...I've thought about being a massage therapist many times (but I have a severe repetitive stress injury that would likely be made worse by pursuing massage). As I grew older, what I felt I COULD do split off from physical healing into mental healing, which is what I hope to do now.
If it wasn't obvious by my name, I identify very deeply now with Cutter. Tam is my actual name...my full name is Tamara, but, I just don't really identify with that name (I know another Tamara, so it's weird), and my blood relatives call me Tammy, which...I'm not terribly fond of. So I go by Tam, which feels right. And part of that is the connection to Cutter. Cutter and I...we're both born leaders, I think. Our priorities are for our tribes. We had to grow up fast. We mourn similarly...even though we are truly members of our respective species, we see ourselves as just outside of that, not really...fitting in, a bit broken.

| In a very real way, I'm Moonshade. Just... without having been lucky enough to have any children. Though, in my case, that's probably a hidden blessing.
Moonshade is going through this HUGE transition. She's seeing other Ways of living and seeing that they are *good* and they *work* for other people when she was taught from the time that she was a tiny cubling that there was only *one* Way and that there was no good outside it.
Her lifemate is a staunch conservative, with that stubborn streak and the internal child who's completely messed the hell up by needs that were never adequately met growing up. In part because those around him didn't realize that they *were* needs that required meeting. When you don't realize that something is a Thing, that doesn't mean that it doesn't *exist*, ya know?
Just because a fish cannot describe water, or understand what, exactly it is, that water can still poison the fish.
So after so many centuries of living one way, with the doubts pushed to the back of her mind, or silently contemplated because she didn't know how to put words to any of it, or even knew that there WERE words to be put... Moonshade is finally saying that enough is enough. She's going through a paradigm change, and her lifemate might simply not be malleable to handle the change.
It's not that they don't love each other anymore. The love is still THERE. They're just so damn DIFFERENT now that in spite of that love, the relationship might not survive.
We've already seen Strongbow attempt emotional manipulation, and I roared with admiration when Moonshade stopped that right then, because I've BEEN the target of that manipulation and I wasn't able to do what she did. I'm still not really able to do what she's doing, not yet.
So I feel for Moonshade, I empathize with her. I know the struggle she's going through because in some very basic ways, it's my own struggle too.
As far as which characters I admire the most... *chuckle* Well, my mascot has been Petalwing since the very beginning of having avatars on the SoC. I love that annoying little know-it-all of a bug. (Name not BUG!!) And I love all Preservers, to an extent. They're so damn HELPFUL and they just want to belong! And they ARE loved, even though they're annoying, which is something I take great comfort in.
And even in their annoying, bossy ways, Preservers have a fount of wisdom within them that is sometimes pointedly accurate.

| As pretty much the whole world knows, Rayek is my favorite. To paraphrase Clearbrook, if you can Recognize a fictional character of a different species , then I've Recognized Rayek. However, in terms of personality, I am far more like Moonshade than Rayek. I love making things, I'm very loyal to my family and I'm as devoted to my "Way" ( my faith and church) as she is to hers. Even her recent disillusionment echos with me as I tire of muddling about on Earth and wish I could move on to Heaven as she yearns to move on to the Palace. - MrsGrizzley wrote:

On an unrelated note, LunaKat, I think Mrs.Grizzley just nicely summed up what I feel happened with Rayek's childhood and what I was trying to say in that discussion we were having back at the old forum.

| It's extremely interesting to read all these contributions. Your view on characters and how you encountered EQ and what it means for your life ... the insights you shared about yourself...
And it proves once more that I probably don't identify with fictional (or living) caracters as you do. I have my favorites, that's true. But they are neither like I am not like I want to be (okay, maybe dream of - in another reality). If I would have to chose ... a nameless Sunvilliger at best and a faceless Glider in worst case. ___________________________________________________ Indem du etwas tust, das dir oder jemand anderem gefällt, erschaffst du bereits einen Wert.

| First of all, it has been a long, long time since I had an english conversation, so if you don't understand something I am writing, just tell me. I'm always trying to improve my english. Like Embala, I am really fascinated by how other readers of EQ perceive all the different characters. For example, characters that were annoying to me - like Ember for example - was a role-model for another person in reality. That's why EQ is so succesful. Many different characters to identify with for many different people. It's just amazing how the Pinis achieved that aspect. Anyway, as I grew, my perceiving of some characters changed and in fact, I don't think Ember is annoying anymore. I realised, it was just because of my hidden wish to see a daughter of Leetha who would be just like her: A graceful, gentle healer; extremely feminine and a great mother. As a kid I thought: "This is the daughter of Leetha? She's so tom-boyish and nothing like her? Where did the massive healing power go? I want a mini-version of my favourite character!" Well, kids can be stubborn about their wishes...I was really angry at Wendy Pini at that time. I always sympathized with the "gentle ladies", like Leetha, Tyleet or Moonshade. However, I don't remember fully identifying with any of them, apart from a few character traits. | |

But I do relate to the whole being mopey-weepy thing as well as the not belonging thing, the being stuck in a stupid mountain even though you can fly thing, and the "I want to think for myself" thing. And the outfit. Overall, Book 3 always was Wendy's finest moment to me, even if she doesn't seem to think so herself. Adar, for having been the local skeptic and unimpressed fairy-quibbler! And Rahnee, from Lynn Abbey's stories... Rahnee is just special to me. https://anjtuesday.wordpress.com/2012/07/31/soulnames-and-wolfsong-in-lynn-abbeys-rahnee-stories/ As for who I'd like to be? Probably Leetah. I even dreamt about being her. But I know I'm not actually like her.

| Who do I identify with?
Aroree - because she found her way out of a controlling group and had to learn who she was all over again afterwards.
Ekuar - because he's been bullied and abused, and found value as a person, serenity to live in and comfort to give afterwards. And because he often finds himself in the position of peacemaking.
And Timmain - because she lost herself for a while (running as a wolf before the Palace War) and found a new place for herself after all from her original world were gone. Because she is accepted by many groups and yet doesn't fit completely into any of them. ___________________________________________________ I'm not old. I've just been young for a very long time...
