| So my next project with regard to WaveDancers lore is - list all the "nameless" WaveDancers portrayed in the comics and give them at least a face, if we can't have names to match up. Using my mock-up timeline/birth order for ref, I tried to sort them in three (rough) age groups; ELDERS, UNKNOWN AGE and YOUNG. In present time these guys should all be dead, with the possible exception of some survivors from Zephyr's band (Wavecatcher says there were missing bodies in the carnages). I included characters from the "WINDKIN" story where Windkin saves a WaveDancer girl (not-canon, though I cannot find for the sake of me a reference to where it's said. I'm guessing it was some time or other in the mailing list but not sure - if someone can point me to an actual reference of Richard declaring it Worldpool that would be of great help!) and the "EARLY ART" from the various teasers and the Chaosium RPG companion book on the sea elves (which according to "Turning Tide" inspired the new WaveDancers). While I can only assume that there were at least some cousins to the "actual" WaveDancers in Zephyr's band... figuring out who the other nameless are is just wishful thinking. But anyone who might feel like writing stories or art about the WaveDancers past could certainly use them as "gap fillers", give them names and connections and what not. ___________________________________________________ Thanks to my dearest friend Embala for the signature! | Some musings and speculations between me and @Embala The coralshaper / third healer (look out for the OMG - "Luke, I am your father!" moment at some point in the speculations - Spoiler:
- Embala wrote:
The coral shaper - my initiate thought was: Darshek! ... guess it's the wrong time for him, tho. - ChristinaRaibert wrote:
Yeah, that was my exact thought too! As far as age goes, it's a definite possibility as Darshek is seen shaping a spear tip in the panel before (also, this is post Coral's death, so he'd be alive for sure). But the different top and the shaped ears are what leaves me puzzled - unless it's just an artistic slip?
A pity it can't be Pirn, who died long before those events - that'd account for a strong resemblance between father and son!
Also, something Snakeskin said about his being more comfortable shaping corals instead of flesh makes me wonder if coral is perceived as rocks and stones at all - Longfin was seen shaping a sand sculpture for sure - but I think aside from Snakeskin, this was the first instance of coral-shaping ever portrayed. I wonder if it's a separate gift - or just another facet of a healer's abilities?
- Embala wrote:
Rockshaper work with dead material. Stone, minerals, metals ... I have no idea how they influance it. Make it fluid maybe - or manipulate it on an atomic level.
Corals are alive - the calcite "stone" is nothing else but the skeleton of smal animals. When you shape living corals you need to manipulate the animals - deal with organic stuff. It's best comparable with a treeshaper's ability - remember how Redlance made the dreamberry bush and the new Fathertree grow fast and strong?
Of couse it should be possible for a mere rochschaper to shape the calcite skeleton - but this would most probably kill the coral animals. And dead corals are a poor barrier - damaged and torn apart by waves soon.
For the sand Longfin only needs rockshaper qualities.
A living coral barrier requires healer abilities - wouldn't hurt to influence both the animal AND the calcite skeleton, tho. Additional rockshaper knowledge could be helpful.
- Embala wrote:
I think all the "shaping" abilities - all the magic in fact - come from the same source and exist in each elf . All Humans can see, hear, smell, feel, taste, sing or shape something. Some are especially gifted on one or the other level - in elfin case this would be showing magic. And it is rare because 1. Adode weakens the magic and 2. most elves are not trained at all.
With the Palace and enough leisure time each elf could learn everything ... but some would still prefer one or the other magic because they are especially gifted there.
Just how I put it together for myself ...
- ChristinaRaibert wrote:
Good point there - that'd also explain how Korafay developed floating abilities which were never before seen among WaveDancers. I wonder if that might turn out to be the case for Ohler as well? I'm thinking about that panel with him, Newstar, Redlance and Nightfall - perhaps returning to his old gardening habits will bring forth some plantshaping power in him?
And now I think about it... if coralshaper is another branch of healing, the male coralshaper was probably the "third healer" living at Crest Point when Reef ran into Winnowill! O_O
- Embala wrote:
Have I given you a thought?
I had the same idea about Ohler ... - ChristinaRaibert wrote:
You sure did!
That would make sense... he might have been like Snakeskin - more comfortable shaping coral than flesh, and not near half as powerful a healer as Skimmer (whose magic abilities, I think, were very close to Leetah's). And he lived at least for some years after Coral's death... I wonder if he actually lived to see Zephyr's band leave? Would have been logical to take at least one healer along for the ride when the main tribe had Skimmer, Skimback and Snakeskin (although his powers, at least, might have developed later in his life...).
Maybe that was just it? With three healer - and a possible fourth yet to come into his own - the tribe felt that they were safe enough at Crest Point like in any other place, if only they learned to defend themselves? Somehow I'm reminded of how self-assured Leetah first was when she met the Wolfriders. Maybe the three healers, even in the wake of the recent deaths, felt compelled to stay and protect their kin rather than leave on an unknown venture. I get the impression Zephyr and co went strongly and very much against their tribe's judgment when they decided to leave...
Also... that could totally be just me, but... isn't it possible that this healer/coralshaper fellow actually was Stormsong? Maybe he sacrificed himself in some way or other when No-Ripple was pregnant with their son. He could have tried to heal an injured sea critter at the risk of his life (Leetah and that troll, anyone?) or lingered around the corals to reinforce the barrier - against Surge's expressed orders - and thus exposed himself to the humans harpoons... would go with No-Ripple stating that he was "lost through no fault of a chief's decision".
And coincidentally - that throws a new light on the friendship between Snakeskin and Spine, if Spine's brother had also been a healer, and Snakeskin's possible mentor...
That's the awesome thing with WaveDancers - there's so much to speculate The "early concepts" art- Spoiler:
- Embala wrote:

- And Tumble and Moonmirror underwent a gender swap
Who says that this teaser captures the time we know from the beginning of WAVEDANCERS?
- a very young Surge - the female at the boat being Coral - Salt, of course - two pips we know as adults in WD#1 (you can tell better Who they might be, Christina) - and a battle scene that is just coincidental with the one we are familiar with
... how about this?

Yeah, that's another great possibility - the beautiful thing with early time art is the speculation
And obviously I'm up to trying to find names for the pips among present-time adults
Let's see, they seem two boys... most obvious pick would be Kroosh (the one with lighter hair at the left) and Strand. But I don't want to go with such obvious a pick, and besides there's no indications that the pips are siblings and not just playmates.
According to my timeline - which might have underwent several changes from the time the teaser was sketched - the pips around this time were Wavecatcher, Gull, Glimmer, Sandspinner, Sandsparkle (possibly born only after Coral's death) and maybe Strand. I suppose it could be just any of the boys (we don't know if Glimmer was guy or girl) - but if I was to make a bet? I'd say the one with light hair is Wavecatcher (there's some slight resemblance there) and the one with darker hair Strand - the only pip whom we know for sure has darker hair than the others Or failing that, the one on the left could be the nameless fisher in Zephyr's band - he had fair hair too.

| As for the latest picture, the one from the early Final quest...( do you have the whole picture? Long time since I've seen it ) I think it's supposed to be Brill, even if she look more like Spray. But love the idea of a future character You can see she looks a lot like Brill, but more..."dressed up", with the head piece and the extentions ___________________________________________________ | |

| I'll see if I find a larger version of the pic for you, Blackbird Yeah, I think she was meant to represent Brill's role in the "Final Quest" (so... we'll see more of her, other than as Sunstream's lifemate and Korafay's mom? All I've had since the "Special" is the mention of her hair getting tangled in a coral fan! I need my Brill fix! ). But looking at her in hind-sight, she also makes me think of those new Ent/elves... hey, maybe one of them Recognizes a WaveDancer, and she could be their child? Now that would be an interesting twist! ___________________________________________________ Thanks to my dearest friend Embala for the signature! Healing currents, indeed... | Yay! I've given up hopes to see Wavecatcher and Wavelet make a stand... but a girl can hope Agree about Moonmirror - I want to see her become Snakeskin's lifemate and chieftess of the tribe. I've been rooting for those two all along Guesses about who her parents could actually be? My bet is on the "leader-type" for father... and mother, either Spray (but I think that'd be way too obvious!) or someone else. Wavelet would be a nice choice - she's a plantshaper, he's a wood elf. Or... maybe No-Ripple? I'm not sure Krill would like following her sister's footsteps - she's more like Ember I think, not really that much into the whole motherhood thing. ("Leader type" means the red-haired male who seems in charge of the other ents. He might not be the chief after all... that's just how he struck me ^^) ___________________________________________________ Thanks to my dearest friend Embala for the signature! | Yay! I've given up hopes to see Wavecatcher and Wavelet make a stand... but a girl can hopeThere you see, I had already forgot about those two! And the only reason I knew about them was Wingthings alternaverse, she made him Yuns mate. They deserve to be included in FQ. Moonmirror as adult could be stunning, and she seem to have a lot of potential, so yeah, why not with Snakeskin? I love No-Ripple, but don't see her and Snakeskin as recognized anytime soon. ( Isn't she flirting with both him and Spine...? ) We need more cross-tribe recognizions! We need more Wavedancers recognizing, and we need to be really suprised Potentials among the Go-backs and Sun-folks are many, and the Wolfriders has a few themselves...Freetouch, Sust, Pool, Mender, Yun, Skywise, Pike, among others have never recognized. ___________________________________________________ | |
