PostSubject: GRIM TALES   Fri Apr 17, 2015 3:25 am

"We have everything."

Coolly installed on one of the highest branches of the huge ancestral Father Tree, Yoni observed the masses of human slaves, down there.

They had been deprived of their selves, of their will, and they now obeyed whatever order the elves commanded them.
"Like the dirty beasts of labour they are.", Yoni thought.
Of course, a few among them would regain some will, with time and abuses, but they were sooooo easily spotted !...
And quickly put back into total obedience and back in the working lines, for some more years.
A mere short stare by one of the shepherds... and it was done. How Yoni would have liked to have that gift !
He would not have to train himself for becoming a raider.
He gripped his bow and shot an arrow at a male slave that had been eyeing too many other slaves, these last days, whispering, trying to wake them from their mental submission...
"Figured I didn't spot you from two moons ago...", he muttered as the slave died, slowly, crawling on the mud, from the poison.

Some humans, amid those thousands down there, working to build the weapons for the Conquest, tried to escape... only to provide some excitement and hunting occasions for the Hunt.
Yellow-Eyes and the wolves were patrolling everywhere on Haven.

But the one Yoni was trying to see was the Renegade. She was so intense ! Recent Wolfrider breed, from the inner part of the continent. She even despised the comfort elements, the luxuries that made most here so proud ! He also loved her for that.
She was older than him, but not so much so, in fact. He loved her touch, her growls, her hatred of humans, her cruelty.
She had admirably proven her worth to Two-Spear and she now served at his side, within the Father Tree Guard.

She had added many human skulls to the old multitude of those already covering the lower branches of the Father Tree.
The Renegade preferred that nickname to her former Wolfrider name, for she had been BANNED from the tiny, pitiful pack that lived there, led by her sire.
Yet, her father seemed to be an interesting wolf chief. How was he named, again? Ah, yes.. Bearclaw.

From what she had told him, even if that wolf chief had eventually been forced to ban his own daughter...
...he could be convinced of joining forces, in time, if his small tribe survived so far.

Yoni had grown sick of the Ancients' repeated warnings and teachings about how the previous war didn't go so well, with trolls resisting more than expected and eventually chasing them away. Many elves had died.
What was obvious to Yoni was how those respected 'Ancients' did NOT have magic powerful enough to reactivate the Palace.

As if magic was the only solace to everything ! He spat as Two-Spear did when confronted to such an attitude.

SLAVES, TOOLS and STRATEGY ! THOSE were the real solutions.

It had taken them leaving the Palace to the trolls and many bad turns leading to their exile here, on the huge island they called Haven, for Yoni's nation to FINALLY realize that.

And the final irony was that even magic could turn against them, since one elf, even from far away on the continent, had mental strength enough to CAPTURE some Ancients' minds and kill them ! Since then, they all had stopped 'going out' and they had been developping secured sending ways. One, already, was even born with a Rejection power that could prove VERY useful against that.. how did they call her...? Winnowill ! What a strange name... Such an enemy had to be taken seriously.

The sound of the huge forges, down there, and the occasional human screams of pain below made him grin.

"Soon, pretty soon, in only some scores of human generations, we shall make this world ours. Forever."

PostSubject: Re: GRIM TALES   Fri Apr 17, 2015 5:09 am

The young female slave had no name. No name she could remember, anyway.
She had stopped wondering about such idle, dangerous things since looong, already.
Surviving and not getting punished was hard enough as it was, when the mental control began to wear down.

Whenever it happened, she simply kept her eyes lowered, imitating all the other slaves' attitudes and gestures.
But now, she remembered just TOO MANY things !...
She repeatedly had to refrain herself to stare at some shepherd.
It felt sooooo good when the mental control was re-established.
She was so thankful for the sense of belonging and the oblivion it offered to her tormented mind.
It FELT so good !
But she DESPERATELY wanted to THINK. To think by herself.

The worst part was the 'servants', humans who were priding themselves of not being under mental control... But the masters kept them sterile, unlike the slaves ! They had to prove their worth almost constantly and with extreme cruelty to the elves ( that all here called 'imps' ) in order to keep their 'servant' status. But THEY had clothes and comfort and they did whatever they wanted with human slaves, as long as the work was done...

Enough was enough.

She had gathered two hands of mind rebels, so far, and she kept them undetected by having them copying her ways. She was maintaining them by force and fear, and, for the last three years, she had trained herself in killing the disobedient or problematic slaves around her, in very discrete ways. She even murdered two servants. Hence she HAD to flee. But she was waiting for the right occasion.

At times, some slaves remembered things and talked, and she now remembered many, many tales, many interesting details. The rest of what she needed... she had guessed and figured.
She was only fourteen or fifteen years old, she didn't know exactly, but she now was sure she could do it.
She had glimpsed ships out at sea when she was far younger and worked as a running messenger at the coastal defense line.
She remembered the spot and some visual references.

She had to reach the beach at the right time of the year, but there was the Hunt.
And that bunch of barely awaken slaves.
She had already decided THEY were the main problem... AND the solution.

All the while keeping them undetected, even through the hard work and punishments and abuses and tortures inflicted by the servants, she waited patiently, even stealing some food, some little things.

When she finally launched the plan, she led two hands and three with her running into the forbidden parts of the forest. It was a loooong run, and they had been preparing it for months. One even had found some plants that 'covered the scent', but she didn't believe in such things. The forest was full of poor remains of dead slaves who believed in such silly things.

Her plan was simpler and more efficient than what some among her group had figured.

One by one, along their flight, she discretely killed some of her companions, leaving corpses that would slow the Hunt down, always eager to devour humans.
And, at some point, when she estimated the hunters were close on their trail, she separated from the group, letting them do anything stupid enough... to cover for her disappearance... long enough for her to reach the specific beach.

And it worked.
The ship was there, close, and she grabbed some dead trunk and swam.
That too she had trained herself to do.

She never knew that Two-Spear himself had guessed her plan and had separated from the hunting pack to find and follow her trail. From the forests's edge, he was about to launch his huge snarling wolf at the freshly scented smell of that slave when he saw her swimming away, already half way to the ship.
He muttered: "Too late..."
His oooold bones told him that this fleeing slave would be trouble, but he forced himself to NOT even think of it.
He calmed his wolf, sending to him: "There is plenty to feast upon".
And he slowly went back to the Father Tree. The healer would have some work. She would grin contemptuously, as always, telling him he should refrain from leading such hunts, from pushing himself that far. He would provocatively reply, as usual : "Then WHY did you make me immortal !?"
None of those human slaves could even imagine the level of pain that was implied by having to live forever with a body that was initially meant to die during a hunt. Only Yellow-Eyes understood, but he was now far more wolf than elf, and most elves, even Two-Spear, could rarely get him out of the concerns of all those many semi-conscious wolves, many of them gifted with mind magic that was even more fearsome than the controlling 'stare'. Only Two-Spear had understood Yellow-Eyes' warning about what would happen if the wolves would grow discontent of the elves they lived around and with... "Even the Ancients should fear that..", he thought.

The young slave had not figured how tiring swimming would be, but she managed to get on the boat without help. The men aboard were surprised to see a naked black young woman who was one head taller than the tallest of them. She sensed they feared her and immediately used that. She had recovered, now, and when the first one tried some menacing gestures, she walked toward the one who had to be the chief, deliberately ignoring the bully... only in order to come close enough to him to, calmly, almost casually, savagely plunge her fingernails into his throat and ripping it.
She savored the shocked faces of all those humans dressed like servants.

The chief of that boat calmed his men, understanding and valueing what she had done for what it truly was. He addressed her with a word: "Sama..."
And she decided it would be her name, from now on.

With time, she learned their tongue, and many, many other things...

Once, she asked the captain of the boat, during one of the discussions she had with him, before reaching the coast of the continent : "But don't your people skin a slave alive, when they disobey !?..."
The way he gasped from shock and then terror at the very idea had her smiling...

It was clear that those humans didn't know what elves of Haven did, had and could accomplish.
And, after making her way though many human lands, she understood it was URGENT to make humans PROGRESS, or this whole world would soon resemble the hell she came from.

It had been only six years since she had fled, and now she had reached the most beautiful town she had ever seen, away from the Djuhn, within the continent, one full of promises, named Yissmir.

Only five more years and Sama became the Lord's master assassin, there.

Deep under the Father Tree was a huge room, that had been patiently excavated by the human slaves for centuries, and then ornated by the elves. A pure wonder, with plays of light coming from secured shafts from the surface, jewels, sculptures, etc.

A room even more splendid than the reserved rooms of the Ancients were.

Yoni was not a youngster anymore, but he could assist to the exceptional meeting there only from one of the luxurious balconies above. While sipping a delicious drink that one of his slaves handed him, he watched the Ancients preparing it all.

The Palace had been ACTIVATED ! At looooooooong last !
It had sent shivers among all elves, throughout all Haven, when it was known.

For half of the elves talking here, mainly the Ancients, it was : "We have to wait..."
For the other half, it was : "We have to act !"

But it soon became clear that none here had ANY idea of what was going on, who had activated the Palace, and even less how.

Only elves were tolerated in this ancient room.
No wolfrider, no wolf.
The only exceptions were Yellow-Eyes and Two-Spear.

Yoni's coming boredom vanished when those two came in, without protocol, and when, with their usual lack of manners, they interrupted the idle discussions, down there...

Yellow-Eyes was obviously trying his best to wake his elfin mind, in order to follow the discussions, and he kept silent, only occasionally growling...
But Two-Spear interrupted the Ancients violently, with a challenging stare :
"STOP THAT YAPPING ! We have to KNOW much, and QUICKLY so. Since your magic is so INEPT at that task, we need to send SPIES on the continent... and to prepare strong DEFENSES."

Yoni smiled at the way thse two didn't bear for long the numerous hesitations and worried babblings that followed.

And soon they left, and boredom took Yoni over, after one more hour of hearing the discussions.

But there had been a result of that outburst : some raiders would be sent urgently to spy upon humans, on the continent.

Yoni knew for sure he would be chosen. Even Haven, huge a territory as it was, was too small for him.
Many, even among the Ancients, had surely noticed that...

So he waited for the decision.

And, like some other ones, he sent his will to participate to that spying force.
And they APPROVED !

Finally !...

He could barely wait, now. Yoni was not sure that the Renegade could accompany him, but, despite being forbidden to send to the surface, he warned her.

And her intense sending came back to him, shaking him, as it always did, and she was even more decided to go on such a mission than he was !

The next days and nights were a pure nightmare for Yoni's slaves.
He wouldn't care killing them all before going on such an adventure.

Winnowill had just felt the LINK.
"The child... HE is the Link !", she even uttered it out aloud, she realized.

The last events were adding to the global catastrophe she had sensed coming and that she tried to prevent, all along... but THIS was the worst last touch !

Voll... dead ! She could barely accept the idea, even with his corpse right in front of her.
Her dear, DEAR Voll awaken by that silly healer, that Leetah !
Only to fly head first into death...
Why, oh WHY didn't he heed her warnings more !?

The trolls had not finished completing the metallic dome above the ruins of the Palace, and now she realised her son had helped those pitiful 'Go-Backs' and those savages, those 'Wolfriders' in winning the war against that King Guttlekraw !
A total disaster...
That dome would have shut the Palace forever from detection, and thus fooled the ones she sensed, exiled near half the world away.

And it would have allowed her to concentrate even more the magic captured by the huge trap for magic that Blue Mountain had been carefully and slowly designed into, for millenias.

Now, she would have to act with what she had.

She knew there was enough magic gathered here, within Blue Mountain and its inabitants' minds, for a specific option.
And since revenge was in her mind, she decided to launch the Great Egg.
To gather all pure elves by force and to wipe all those awful mistakes behind her, before...
...intercepting the Palace and fixing once and for all times the huge mistake she had seen into the Egg, that monumental joke their ancestors had played on themselves.

NO ONE would stop her anymore.

She would have to be quick, because the child, that Suntop would soon get trained enough to really play his part as the Link...
...and that would mean the end of all her efforts, of everything she had pushed Voll and the Gliders to accomplish in Blue Mountain.

She spent the next nights harping on all Blue Mountain's inhabitants' dreams.
Only the Chosen Eight escaped that, but they would never betray her...

That Leetah that had her making that fatal choice...
Winnowill had the perfect revenge in mind for that tormenter.

She would stay behind.

It turned out that only Yoni had the determination to go that far into the continent and even beyond, with his servants, fooling and manipulating humans, extracting information about the events.
For that long.

"It's been years...", the elf pondered, "...but the whole picture is fascinating !"

All of his companions had left the continent since long, already. The spying mission was difficult, but their mental powers had greatly helped the chosen raiders. As well as their cruel methods.

However... when they learned that the Palace had VANISHED, totally disappearing from this world, it discouraged almost all of the elves of Haven... and only one hand of elf spies had gone on collecting information. Among them Yoni and the Renegade, but even she was missing the wolves too much and she had to go back to Haven.

Yet he stayed, and he suddenly realized that, after her departure, he had spent almost twenty years travelling, taking to humans, gathering small elements, strange tales, etc.

To an incredible result.

Only ONE elf, a dark-skinned one gifted with the gliding power and far more... with powers and an attitude strangely resembling those of Haven's elves, had reactivated the Palace, and then, a short time later (according to elves' sense of time), had made the Palace disappearing !
And it was not even on the continent that the Palace had been located for sooo long !

The Palace had been reactivated enough to FLY !

It also seemed that that Winnowill elf had disappeared : elves could now send from far away and even 'go out' without fearing her.
And a strange presence had been identified, as well. A young elf with a GLOBAL MENTAL LINKING ability, a power unheard of !
An elf who disappeared with the Palace and that strange dark elf, unfortunately.

When Yoni embarked on the ship to Haven, with the human crew controlled by his most faithful servants, he knew he had an incredible tale for the Ancients' ears.

During the trip, an awful storm hit the pitiful human ship and Yoni dearly regretted not having asked for an elfin boat. And the whole structure broke, and it sunk, brutally, as if aspired down.

Even as he fought to swim and to stay alive, Yoni felt himself aspired into the maelstrom...

And suddenly what scared him the most was not the cold water around him, but a dark, maleficent presence in his mind !

Among the pieces of the sunk ship and the corpses or dying humans going to the depths, he was now into a bubble of air and quickly attracted to the depths.
All the while, with a cruel elfin female mental laughter resonating inside his mind.

And he saw that elf. He knew at once she was that all too famed Winnowill.

She mocked him for a time, and then the torture began.

It was more mental than physical, but Yoni soon regretted not having ended his life some moments ago...

Winnowill had finished extracting everything the young elf knew.

"Recognized, this one, and to one of those "Wolfriders" savages who live there. Interesting...", Winnowill thought, and she used that knowledge to pass one message to Haven.

With a final deadly dark send, she killed Yoni, telling him AND his recognized mate :
"I shall make sure your folk will NEVER AGAIN cross the seas, savages !"

The message was accompanied with visions of storms and sunken ships. She had recorded many such delightful scenes, already.

On Haven, near the Father Tree, the Renegade stopped abruptly in her tracks.

The shock was deep, but the message and Yoni's death and last moments and thoughts plunged her into a PURE WOLF RAGE, that only increased when she fully understood.

All was red, around her.

Only distance and the mental defenses in the area limited the shock, for her, but she had been standing there, among the slaves, rigid and trembling with rage for a long time.

It took Two-Spear himself, shaking her, to get her out of her trance.

When her sight came back to normal, she saw birds flying above the forest. Her mind could only record that, strangely, like an island in the midst of a storm of rage. She did not even feel the tears on her cheeks.

She could only whisper :
"Winnowill... She is still alive. She killed Yoni. She will crush all of our boats..."

Two-Spear lost no time and soon had the slowly recovering Renegade telling what little she knew to the Ancients.

"So now we're stuck to Haven.", Two-Spear concluded, after a sigh.

Most elves in the assembly room were now lowering their heads, slowly understanding that all their hopes of conquest were seriously compromised, and for long...
The Ancients soon confirmed that Winnwoill was alive, since the spirit of one of them had just been captured...

Almost none of them understood why the Renegade, when she came back to the surface...
...looked up to the sky, with a strange grin, and said, staring at birds :

"We will fly, then..."

I think that it may take me a couple of reads to understand it all, but it's very intriguing. I actually like stories that explore the dark side of things. Waiting to see how this will develop as it catches up to the current storyline.

Within the walls of the Palace, that totally wonderful new home for her and her children's children, at the side of Timmain, Savah, within the secrecy of her mind, was now doing something that she had never liked doing : exploring her childhood memories. And analysing them. Again.

The four families of elves who lived within that part the great forest had happy lives, with comfort, pleasures, mental and fire magic, good food, some contacts with the other elfin families from other parts of the elfin nation...
...and hundreds of mentally tamed humans at their complete service.

The mental techniques even had the vast majority of those human slaves 'happy' to serve the elves, and this elfin community was very much a peaceful one, with a good forge and many other activities left into the hands of the primitive humans.

Savah's judgment had her correcting this : "We kept them THAT primitive, in fact..", she thought.

She remembered the wonderful rooms the elves lived in, among and under the roots of the tall trees. Her childhood's games.

Savah forced herself to breathe slowly, calmly, to discipline her mind even more than usual to remember the tiniest details, when her mind explored again the scenes of that fateful day...

All had begun with that brutish adult male human, who had emerged from the cave where the forge was installed, with other humans at his side. He had a metallic helmet and a raw metal weapon in hand, and he looked strangely determined. The other humans simply walked slowly behind him, wary, some of them only still barely awake, mentally, Savah now realized.

At this point of her life, Savah now understood many things by repeatedly recollecting and analysing each and every little detail, sight, sound, voice, scream, attitude...

The first elves who had understood that this human slave from the forge was not under control anymore had come closer to him to regain control of him in stricter ways. Too close...
...and those few elves realized only too late how fatal their mistake was, when the savage human AND then the other humans attacked them.

Their mental powers had no effect on THAT human.

Again, Savah's mind confirmed what she had guessed, long ago : "Yes : that metallic helmet protected his mind... A thick model that was designed to equip the future elite human soldiers of our nation's force. What a terrible mistake !"

Two elves were killed at that precise moment.

Panic came only later, when the other elves saw how that human had found a simple but terribly efficient way of temporarily freeing all humans around him : he simply cut them a little, hurting them and having them seeing their blood. And it quickly got them out of their usual hypnotized state, even if it then took them some moments to gather their mind. And, during that period, he was whispering to them...

Only now, within the Palace's influence, Savah admitted that it was not fear : it was purpose.

The elves had to flee, yet they were offered some precious moments to gather some stuff.
Any hostile human who tried to stop them was paralysed, but it soon became clear that the few elves would eventually have to face too many free human slaves, and they could only flee. And there were too many humans all around to even gather the elfin families into a coherent group.

The families had to flee in different directions.
Sour thoughts came to Savah : "We didn't even prepare ourselves for such a situation. No escape route... How dearly we paid for that !"

The situation and the elfin screams around had decided Savah's mother to hurry her family and two other young elves toward a desperate direction : the huge, unexplored desert at the south. Fortunately, most of the humans were still too slow and easily paralysed again, and they didn't even have to run to reach the desert.

However... When they reached it, the human screams they heard behind them quickly forced those few elves to admit they had but ONE option left : CROSSING that desert.

And the looooong and terrible walk through the sands began.

Cant force writing, regardless of the reason you write. I found that years ago and burned myself out trying to meet some "quota" I had set for myself. Some might be able to write that way, but not all. Ill wait!

Thank you for your interest, elf-friends.

Just don't be surprised : I write only when in the mood for it, and after some mental maturing of the scenes I want to expose. It may come almost all at once, or little by little, or after a long time.

I cannot even guess when something has to be written, here.

I'll write...

...when I'll write.

The elves of Haven soon understood that Winnowill's threat was no idle one.

It all began with a terrible series of huge tidal waves that ravaged the harbours and destroyed almost all the ships, within an eight of nights, all around Haven.

A multitude of human slaves died... and also some elves.

And, for the next weeks, months, years, and even centuries, Haven's shores suffered repeatedly from those huger and huger tidal waves.

However, it soon became obvious that the wide area where most elves lived, around the ancestral Father Tree, located deep inside Haven, had nothing to fear from such attacks.

The elves reorganized themselves but they slowly realized they could not rely on ships anymore.

After some centuries, there came monsters, awfully deformed by shape-changing magic, that increased devastation. Some more elves died because of those horrors, but the weapons finally served, and served well against those monstrosities.

Anyway, it became crystal-clear than this too was to be a repetitive threat.

Then, the monsters were made more various and vicious, specifically detecting and attacking elves.
And then : elves AND wolves.
But, at this point, the elves and the wolves had organized a global and efficient watch and almost none of the monsters, no matter how smart or brutal or furtive could avoid being detected and destroyed in time.

Only very few of them could reach the areas inhabited by elves, but they inflicted huge damages on the human populations and many wolves died.

Then came the unnatural parasites and diseases.
But some new elfin healers had been born, and all healers were heavily guarded and kept safe by all means.

However, in the span of one millenia, Haven had become a total hell for the human slaves, both slaughtered by the numerous attacks and punished by the elves who had trouble maintaining their mental control over scared humans.

The human population had been reduced to an eighth of what it was before the attacks.

Worse, even : the wolves of Haven amounted now only to the half of what their number was before Winnowill's acts of terror.

The elves finally decided it was time to completely revise some of their ways and projects.

So much time had passed...

There were only a hand of Ancients left.
And the global situation was almost desperate, on Haven, after that awfully long war, even if that Winnowill had seemed to reduce and even to stop her attacks, during the latest centuries.

Yurrid, one of the Ancients was now trying something extremely hazardous, helped with the Master Healer at his side.

He had been pressed to do so by the Renegade herself, who made clear that if the Ancients didn't do SOMETHING, she would consider them, even THEM as useless mouths...

She was here, at the old table, tense, waiting silently.
Yellow-Eyes had managed to exceptionally leave the wolves for some time, his simple growling presence making her threat even more pressing.

It was not 'going out' : it was a wide mental probe, some far away watch.
For Yurrid alone had sensed that something new had finally happened.
After all those millenias.
He would not even tell them, but he had felt that the Palace had RE-APPEARED on this world.

His trance had been lasting for hours.

Pale and rigid as dead, he now whispered, with a voice that seemed to come from very far away :
" The Palace is here again ! It flies... "

The Renegade and all the elves here were shaken, for their guts told them all that it was true.
No denying the Palace's presence, even from half the world away, once revealed.

The healer had to intervene, since Yurrid was now trying to focus his power despite a huge and growing emotional shock...

" WINNOWILL HAS THE PALACE UNDER HER CONTROL ! ... SHE FLIES IT TOWARD US ! "

It would have been a scream if it hadn't been such a tiny whisper.

The ancient room fell deadly silent.

All had understood : SHE would come to FINISH them all, here, on Haven !...
And with the activated Palace, she could do far worse than everything she had already inflicted them.
And, against such magic, they were helpless, despite everything they had built, all of their weaponss, all of their defenses would amount to NOTHING against the Palace !

All heard the hard nails of the Renegade damaging the old wood of the huge table.

Some more tense moments and Yurrid added :
" What ?!.. The Palace is shaking, as if... Oh ! It CRASHED ! "

It was too much. The healer brought Yurrid's mind back to his body, gently but firmly.

They had all felt the suddden break of the link.

When Yurrid finally stood, trembling, he said : " The Palace is NOT destroyed. I still feel its magic, but.. "

His breathing was only only slowly coming back to normal :
" .. it's terribly weak. And I felt many humans around the crash zone. "

The room was now filled with sighs of relief AND with worried whispers.
" Even without that Winnowil... The Palace in the hands of humans again !... "

Another Ancient asked : " Is Winnowill still alive ? "
Yurrid could only answer : " I'm not sure. I didn't feel her presence, but it doesn't mean that... "
He looked at the healer, who intervened : " Do NOT try again, beloved. "

The Renegade's old bones told her : " Catastrophe upon catastrophe. WE.. MUST.. FIGHT ! "

She stood, barely containing her rage.

" Harbours. Boats. A whole fleet. Quickly. "

After many heartbeats, the Ancients merely nodded.

Winnie shapechanged the cat to have a book growing out of it's back, and plopped down in his lap.  I don't know about you, but if anything shapechanged by Winnie was in my lap, I wouldn't be in the mood to write....

Great stuff PC, Enjoying every bit of it!

I just hope that some attentive readers of Elfquest here, are now guessing what I am trying to picture.

No telling it all too openly...

...or elf-mom will have my skin.
