PostSubject: During a Morning Hunt   Sat Mar 22, 2014 9:52 pm

Joyleaf woke up early. The sun was sinking low but still beaming through the open entrances of the Fathertree, which had been her home since birth. Despite the early hour her stomach was growling. “Time to hunt.” she thought.  Her fur bedding was soft and comfortable, moving would take effort. A cold metal pressed against her back, without rolling over she knew it was her Lifemate Bearclaw's wolf head necklace rubbing against her bare skin. She debated on waking him to join her hunt. Then again perhaps the thrill of a solitary hunt would be good for her.
She clambered slowly away from the furs and her sleeping Lifemate. She watched him roll onto his stomach and grumble in his sleep. He didn't notice she was gone. Quietly she crept past her sleeping cub burrowed deep beneath the furs at his father's feet.
Silently she slipped her tunic over her head. It was becoming threadbare. “I should ask Moonshade for a new one.” she whispered to herself and then slid into her well fitting pants.
With the gentle grace of a falling flower petal Joyleaf, spear in hand leapt down from the Fathertree.  The rest of her tribe must still be asleep. No one stirred. However her keen elf ears picked up snoring inside the tree, likely her older brother Treestump. Alone she walked quietly and cautiously through the woods. The five fingered demons known as human had been venturing ever closer to the Holt these last few seasons. The elven maiden knew not to travel far. Bearclaw, not only her Lifemate, but also her chief had forbid ANYONE to go near the human camp. A warning she would not take lightly.
As she pondered how far into the woods would be safe to go something stirred in the bushes up ahead. Kudzu vines cloaked the underbrush, she couldn't quiet make out what her prey was. She tilted her nose toward the wind. Smells like badger, smells like a large fat badger. She readied her spear to take aim. Before she plunged it forward she heard a sound behind her. Something large and noisy, and getting closer.....

Even in his slumbering state, his senses felt movement... heard a familiar mumble, even though the words were muffled like an incoherent dream.  It wasn't long before curiosity won out over his body's persistence to stay asleep.  Just as one eye peered open, Cutter caught sight of his mother's back and golden mane disappearing out of their den.  The fact that the cub still had to squint from the brief sunlight that slipped through the flap led to his sudden rise of concern.  Why was mother going out so early!?  And without his father during the more dangerous part of the day when the day star was still in the sky?

While lifting his head, Cutter blinked several times to quickly shake off the remaining sleep just as Bearclaw shifted and remained within his own slumber.  Should he wake him?  It wasn't as if his mother was careless during the day star time of sleep, but it simply wasn't normal for her to do so.  Very carefully, the young elf crept over the furs toward the entrance of the den to move the flap just slightly and catch another glimpse of Joyleaf now upon the ground and heading off into the woods alone.

His brow creased further with curiosity, and with that mingled with his eagerness, Cutter snatched his garments that were left in a pile in the corner to quickly dress and slip out of the den without stirring his father.  The youth's initial plan was to simply follow his mother from a distance.  To stay downwind so she wouldn't pick up his scent so easily, and at any time it appeared she was returning back to Father Tree, Cutter would dash back into their den before his mother would suspect a single thing.

Once upon the ground and following Joyleaf's trail, Cutter mentally told himself he wasn't spying on his mother. He was simply watching out for her! And if successful, he would have a proud tale to boast to Skywise about... that he dared to venture out during the day, and never got caught....

Joyleaf knew that stench it was unmistakable. Five fingers! This was closer then ever to the Holt. Quickly she dove into the mass of underbrush and tall twisting roots. Her clothing was the same shades of brown and green as the plant life. Her hair however was not so each to camouflage with it's sunshine golden hue. "Head down" she thought to herself. Suddenly feeling glad she had left her wolf friend behind at the Holt. It was difficult enough to keep just herself hidden.
The five fingers moved closer to her hiding spot. From what she could see of them they were hunting. But what? Food or another sacrifice to that pillar of stone which already held two Wolfrider skulls. A single tear formed in her eye as she thought of Cresent the young elf girl who the five fingers had needlessly slaughtered a few short seasons ago.
The humans spoke to each other in a raspy harsh language. Joyleaf couldn't understand it at all. As she leaned up slightly to hear better the wind began to pick up. The unwashed unkept five fingers pungent odor filled the air. But behind that something familiar. A sweeter smell she knew better then anyone else.
"Cutter." Her flaxen haired cub was close by. Suddenly fear crept into her heart. It was one thing for her to be hiding here but another to know her only son was close by. Blessed with his father's over abundance of curiosity she feared what he could be up too. Not to mention the early hour, he wasn't used to hiding from the day star like she was.
How close was he? Was he following her? Joyleaf's mind began frantically surveying the situation. Had she delivered her son directly into a human hunting party? She had to act!

Cutter was careful with every step, keeping them silent and untraceable.   Although still young, such lessons were taught very early with cubs.  He even kept to crawling under the brush or along fallen trees, knowing how impeccable his mother's sense of smell could be.  Especially when it came to her cub.  Yet the one thing that seemed impossible to break was his odd habit of humming softly to himself when concentrating.  It infuriated Cutter when he realized he was doing it, such as he was now while scurrying on his belly to crawl beneath a thick patch of foliage.   After mentally slapping himself, he began to rise up on his feet very slowly with widened eyes now scouting the forest for any sign of Joyleaf.  After a moment or two, he looked puzzled.  He had her scent just a moment ago! How could he have lost....

With a sudden blink and a gasp, the cub dropped down to the ground in a flash, flat on his stomach, and held perfectly still as the wavering stench grew closer.  Human.... and dangerously close to the Holt! His breath came quick and his heartbeat was pounding so fierce and so fast, the young elf swore either the humans would hear it crashing against his ribs, or he himself would be caught because he couldn't hear them through the rushing of blood through his ears!  Then the odd language reached him... they weren't far off, and "they" meant more than just two or three.  What of his mother?? What if they found her!?  They would be long gone before Cutter could alarm his father and the whole tribe! And there was no way Joyleaf could fight so many off on her own, no matter how skilled of a fighter she was!

He squeezed his eyes tight and demanded his own panic to calm somewhat.  His mind raced with one solitary thought... what would father do....

Suddenly, Cutter blinked his eyes open again with an enthusiastic gleam in his eye.

No...

Not what his father would do...

What his Grandsire would do!!

Bearclaw delighted in telling his son grand stories of Mantricker!  Oh, and there were so many that were told!  And as the cub slithered across the ground quietly to the nearest tree, there was even a hint of Mantricker's mischievous grin across Cutter's lips as he swiftly took to the limbs unseen and unheard by the tracking five fingers below.

He climbed and climbed without the slightest of fear, so captured in his enthusiasm.  And once he was satisfied he was high enough, Cutter quickly scanned the grounds below, noting where every single human was, and with a trained eye, Cutter spotted a small patch of his mother's hair where she burrowed deeply within an overgrowth of fat leaf bushes.  Even if she never caught her cub's scent, Cutter had no choice but to give up his secret in order to give his mother a warning.  It was worth any scolding from his father...  and finally, Cutter gave a sending to Joyleaf with a sense of reassurance that he was safe.  **Mother! Don't move!  There are three humans several trees away to your left and two others to your right!  I'm high in the trees where they can't see me, but I can see them!**

Now it was time to set his distraction into play.  Cutter knew the tree to scramble up into, and now he was surrounded by branches plump full of spike nuts! The shells were as hard as rocks and covered with long jaggers of spikes, and as his small hands carefully picked a few, Cutter threw one as hard as he could in the direction opposite of his mother.  The slapping of the nutshell against leaves and knocking against branches was enough of a ruckus to capture the humans' attention.  Cutter threw two more as hard as arm could muster for even more noise that led the humans to investigate.

After a few more timely spike nuts soared through the trees to clunk randomly to the forest floor, the five fingered hunting party was now well away from Joyleaf and her cub.

Bearclaws eyes snaped open. Something was wrong. He felt fear, but it wasn't his own. He pushed up from the furs and looked around. His lifemate and cub were not in the den. As Joyleaf crossed his thoughts, the fear returned.
*Dehl* he sent before the conscious thought that she may need his help crossed his mind.
No answer. She was to far away for his thoughts to get to her, yet he was positive that the fear he felt had come from her. Quickly pulling on his leathers and boots he he grabed his sword belt and vaulted down from the Father Tree. Coming from the creek he saw One Eye and Clearbrook coming tward the Holt with young Scouter following along holding onto his mothers long silver braid.
"Which way did Joyleaf and Cutter go?" Bearclaw barked, as the unusal fear he felt from his lifemate shortened his temper.
As the first stars began shining through the leaves above, the rest of the tribe had began to stir.
Clearbrook, understanding at once something was amiss, said "We haven't seen them. We thought we were the first ones up."
"I'm going to go find them. One Eye, keep everyone it the Holt till I bring them back. There's something on the breese tonight." Bearclaw growled to them and turned to the edge of the Holt, closed his eyes, and stood quitely searching for his families scent.
As he found the scent and realized the his cub had not left with Joyleaf, but off in a slightly diffrent direction, he knew he should find Cutter first. But the fear he felt in his heart ringing with his lifemates Soul Name nagged at him as he moved into the brush following his sons trail.

Joyleaf's keen sense of smell told her that her young cub barely ten turns of the season now, was very close. Too close in fact. The last time she remembered feeling such fear for another was the the day she Recognized Bearclaw. He had nearly been mauled to death by a huge bear. This was worse though. Bearclaw was strong and cunning, scores older then her. He knew the woods and could outwit man and beast alike. Cutter, little Cutter was so young and full of life and still naive to the dangers that lurked beyond the Holt and his tribe's watchful gaze. She felt a sick twinge in her gut. Could she send from here?
No sooner had she thought it then her cub began to send to her. **Mother! Don't move!  There are three humans several trees away to your left and two others to your right!  I'm high in the trees where they can't see me, but I can see them!** She shifted slightly and could barely make out the pale skin of his arm high up in the trees. Spike nuts began soaring in the opposite directions. As the fell she could tell he was moving every branch he could touch to send the nuts bouncing wildly through the trees.
The five fingers couldn't help but be curious. **TAM ** her sending was calm and even though her heart and mind were a flurry of sudden emotions. **Don't underestimate the five fingers. Be cautious. Stay there until I can get to you. ** Although her sending didn't let it show, she was very proud of her brave young son. Someday she knew he would grow up to be the greatest chief the Wolfriders had ever known. The blood of the 8 chiefs and his own father flowed strong in him. He was diplomatic too – like his mother.
Silently she climbed into the trees and out the branch her son was hunkered down upon. **So brave my little cub.** She embraced him. **Here I was worried I couldn't rescue you in time, and it was you who came to MY aid.** She didn't speak aloud for fear the five fingers may still be within earshot.
The stars were out now, the rest of the tribe would be awake and the hunters would be gathering to search for the night's kill. **Grenn** She sent out a mental message to her Lifemate using his soulname, a name only she knew. **Humans**Her mind touched his.....

Cutter couldn't have been more relieved that his idea had worked, yet his mother's sending still reminded him of the current danger and to remain still and silent.  He watched with eagerness as Joyleaf took to the trees as graceful as a running deer until she reached him with a fierce embrace.  As always, her scent and warmth washed through Cutter with a mother's love protectively holding him.

He relished the sense of pride he felt in his mother's sending, yet knowing his father's anger would be soon to follow.  Pack rules were strict during any gleam of the day star part of the day, and deep down, the cub knew he should have woken Bearclaw instead of sneaking off on his own.  But his worries were soon averted when Cutter saw the newfound direction the five fingered hunters were taking, and his own sendings were as fearful as his mother's.  *Father! They're heading upstream! Near Swiftleap's den and cubs!*

No-no-no!! That wasn't where he had been throwing the spikenuts! Were human ears truly that dense?!  There was no way the mother wolf stood a chance to defend herself and her cubs against five humans!

His own panic began to rise.  Even more so, because Cutter knew deep down he felt the potential bond growing from one of Swiftleap's cubs to be his own bond wolf.  His first....  Without thought save for one, Cutter began squirming frantically out of his mother's arms with a choked cry of urgency.  "Must... get to them...Have to..."  Joyleaf was strong in her attempts to restrain her son, but his slender limbs and limber struggles finally won out and earned his freedom.

As fast as a dashing ravit, Cutter took to the entwining branches that served as the canopy of the forest, leaping and swinging from tree to tree with desperate sendings to his sire to hurry.

Skywise woke up feeling that something was amiss. He dressed quickly, and paused only to adjust the furs covering the sleeping Foxfur so that she would not wake to the feeling of chill where his body had laid beside hers. Then he was out from their den. He arrived just in time to hear One-Eye explain that everyone was expected to stay in the Holt. Skywise asked One-Eye about the reason for this command, and learned that Cutter seemed to have sneaked out on his own.

Some elves, some sensible grown-up elves, would have obeyed the orders and trusted their chief. Not Skywise. Cutter was his brother, or as good as. He couldn't just sit around being idle while his young friend was in danger. Skywise made a show of going back to the den he had recently started sharing with Foxfur, but as soon as he was out of everyone's sight, he walked from branch to branch until he was outside the Holt's area. He summoned Starjumper, and together, elf and wolf began to track the scent of a certain pale-haired boy-cub.

With all her strength Joyleaf tried in vain to hold her son still. He was small, limber, and now panicked. Try as she might the elf mother's offspring wriggled right out of her arms. His blue eyes large as he stumbled forward and the quickly regained gazelle like composure. ***TAM, no, stay, wait for the rest of the tribe.*** He ignored her.
Joyleaf was used to these trees, she grew up here, she knew the HOLT, and the surrounding woods like the back of her hand. He was taking the trees meaning he would go right above the humans. She had no choice but to follow. With each passing moment she knew she wasn't alone though. Her lifemate's stern sending grew stronger.
***Bearclaw, Cutter has gone to Swiftleap's den. The humans are headed that way. They will kill her cubs!*** The fattest of the cubs, a small gray one had held Cutter's attention since the moment it was born. Joyleaf recognized the heart's tug of bonding with a wolf. Bonding with a wolf is much like recognition to the elves. A certain wolf, and for their lifetime ONLY that wolf, would find kinship with the elf who was meant to ride upon it. The wolf would show loyalty to that elf as a constant companion. Since Wolfrider's were all the descendants of Timmorn Yellow Eyes, half elf, half wolf, they shared the blood line of this particular pack. They could send to their bond mount, sometimes even to those bonded to a lifemate or child. Joyleaf's wolf Shadowsheen had remained behind at the Holt. She sent out another sending call, this time to her wolf friend as well as to Blackfell, who wasn't park of Timmorn's pack but had bonded with her Lifemate ***Shadowsheen, Blackfell, howl! Howl for all you are worth, make others howl!***
Joyleaf scurried down the tree and followed the humans on foot. She approached the thick dense portion of the woods where the pack kept their dens.
AAAOOOOOOOOYYYYYHHHHHH
The wolf's call was closing in. This wasn't a happy howl or a mournful howl, but a threatening howl. More then 30 wolves belonged to this pack, if it came to it, she knew 30 wolves would quickly make a meal out of the five man human hunting party.
***Bearclaw, howl my love.*** She sent again as she hunkered down near the cave and began to howl herself.
In the distance she began to hear other howls, it was hard to separate wolf and rider's howls.

Hearing the howls of the wolves, the humans hesitated. Tabak gestured to his men and shook his head. "Demon defenders!" he said gruffly. "My woman will not like it if her man ends up dead!" The others laughed.

"But we could maniacally chase down the demons, throwing all caution to the winds!" inserted one over-eager youth. "First we can try to kill an entire pack of their wolves, and if we survive that- head to their demon dens. There may be young ones wandering parentless through the woods! We can spit them on our spears!"

But an elder, who had lived over two tens and five years, shook his head. "We will seek other game," agreed the tall one with brown eyes and black hair, "perhaps even something we can eat." He was so distinctive that the others all listened.

Joyleaf flushed with pride. Despite having his father's bravery and courage her young son also had her wit. This plan, far fetched as it may be, seemed to be working. It was exactly the sort of thing she would have thought of at his age.
Mingled with that selfsame pride however was fear. The sort fo fear only a mother knows when he child - no matter the age- is in danger. She drew her small knife. It was made by the trolls many years ago. She knew it could slice a wooden human spear in half.
She began to send again #########Cutter my cub, listen. Do nothing in haste. Your Father and a hunting party is closing in. Stay out of sight and we have the upper hand###########
