"Yeah, we just figured we'd keep using them as slaves and keeping them imprisoned in a limited shell of a world. It's fine!"

"Does anyone want to trade digits before we take off in our separate mini-worlds to explore the cosmos?"

"Naw, there's no possibility we could run into any need to communicate with each other in an infinite universe of possible dangers."

Naive is not the word.

How about "complacent", perhaps in the extreme?

It just occurred to me- that the Gliders, in recreating the lifestyle of the High Ones, may have replaced the trolls with human beings.

Nice... and obviously hadnt learned anything... the humans would have revolted almost guaranteed eventually.  (Going twisted) but could not the same be said of the Wolves and Deer and Zwoots? Might it be the Elves are pathologically driven to have "underlings"?

Wolf riders think of wolves as extensions of their family. Different, but equal. Deer and zwoots are definitely animals, in every sense of the word. And frankly, were deer and zwoots to gain sentience of the kind, the Go Backs and Sunfolk have a very different attitude to that sort of thing, and probably wouldn't have continued to use them as simple beasts of burden. As far as the gliders, Winnowill and Aroree were apparently the only ones with any real interest in them, the former because they seemed to feed her need for healing, the latter because they were fun.

The High Ones either didn't notice, or didn't care that their pets had become fully sentient beings. The former speaks sadly for their intelligence, the latter for their ethics.

Elwing's Uninsightful question of the day: What mode of transportation does Skywise use when he visits Germany?

Answer: a Fahrrad, of course!
