Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided? Empty
PostSubject: Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided?   Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided? EmptyFri Dec 18, 2015 7:12 am

Something I've actually been speculating about for some time.

In the beginning of issue 7, when Aroree picks up a faint open sending Venka's first reaction is to pick up her shield and state that she hopes weapons won't be needed, sort of indicating that they've had trouble with other elves before.
Two issues earlier - in issue 5 - Kahvi specifically told Teir that she gave him to tribesmates she could trust.
So, I've been wondering; what if it isn't all the Go-Backs who're following Venka? What if there are some who would've preferred if they'd continued following Zey's way?

Venka's reaction ... I remember. Had the same thought:"Are there hostile Elves around?"

A hint? A red hering? Just a "action scene" to get some suspense ... without further meaning? I have no idea. ...

A splinter tribe would be a possibility. Still leaves the question: Why don't the Elves talk about such "important" things like hostile tibes and lingering sinister energies?

Seriously - we need a listing about unsolved (possible) hints in FQ.

But why would Venka have failed to mention that in the course of ten years?

While, as a writer, I wouldn't be surprised in finding the Go Backs(the most prolific and volatile of all the tribes, as well as the ones who've been split up before) having gone separate ways and forming their own tribe, I really doubt that Wendy or Richard have had that logical a thought.

PostSubject: Re: Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided?   Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided? EmptySat Dec 19, 2015 7:51 pm

Here's what I'd LIKE to believe is going on:

Wendy is sowing little hints that she can choose to exploit later if she wishes - the cryptic comments could refer to a rival Go-Back tribe (because a schism is VERY likely, I suspect Venka's only found a small splinter of all the Go-Back descendants) OR another elf group that Wendy has in reserve - keeping her options open for storytelling. The beauty is these hints are just cryptic enough that she could also just let them go and it would not impact the story terrible. An author hedging her bets.

Just like Venka's comment about being chief, to the effect of: "I lead, they do whatever they like" - that could just be simple joke line, or it could be referred to later as a prophetic foreshadowing of her very own Zey Backstabber taking over the tribe while she is off getting shot with Rayek.

This is what I want to believe.

Here's what probably IS going on:

Wendy wrote half-assed embellishments to her dialogue (Kahvi trying to dodge responsibility for abandoning Teir - "hey, I left you with decent folks!!" - and Venka saying "ooh, look everyone, it's *dangerous* up here in the north!") and she seriously has not given the Go-Backs a second thought. Much like Venka in the aforementioned gallivanting off to get shot.

Am I bitter? Oh, just a bit. A 20 year wait to see Venka be chieftess and now she spends most of her time ducking responsibility for the sake of advancing the plot! Like everyone else in FQ.

PostSubject: Re: Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided?   Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided? EmptySat Dec 19, 2015 10:34 pm

That's not entirely fair. Not only that, but it's cruel to any parent who has had a child adopted. Kahvi left Teir with people who DID care for him, and love him, and he had a real family with them. Adoptive families are real, and this constant "Kahvi abandoned Teir/he never had a family" is insulting to all adoptive and foster families, and to the first families of adoptive children. And honestly, even if Kahvi made a mistake in conceiving Teir(a bad decision, and honestly, i doubt she would have actually been any happier with a girl) at least she didn't compound the error by raising a child she didn't want.

Other than that, I have to agree with Wingthing. Even though the Go Backs are, outside of the Sun Folk, the best tribe to actually splinter apart, form new cultures and tribes, the fact is that Wendy Pini has absolutely no intentions of following up on this storylines. I don't think it's just laziness, though. I think she simply doesn't have time.

It would be better if she had an actual editor, then she might avoid little potholes like this. Oh well.

Well... she is Kahvi's daughter, so she doesn't exactly have the not really that interested in being chieftess thing from strangers.

Oh, don't misunderstand me, I agree giving Teir up to his adoptive parents was the best possible choice Kahvi made - her massive mistake was hoping to conceive a designer baby who would grow up to be just like Vaya and/or Venka. It was a remarkably selfish choice to say to herself "I only wanna raise a strong girl" knowing there was a good chance she would have a boy or a less than strong girl.

Her whole attitude to Teir of "look, you just werent what I ordered so I passed you on to someone who DID want you, get over it" was classically offensive Kahvi, with no regard for all of Teir's unresolved trauma/yearning to understand this vague memory of another mother who disappeared.

But then Kahvi has never exactly been in the running for Best Mom.

Considering that her first known act was to go out and commit suicide by proxy-- she may not have been in the best frame of mind to raise a child, regardless of gender.

I think the issue (this issue I have, anyway) with Kahvi giving Teir up to an adoptive family isn't that there's anything at all wrong with that choice in itself - it was almost unquestionably the best thing for Teir, since Kahvi wasn't even a very good mom to the kids she wanted to raise. It's that she deliberately went out and conceived him to fulfill some ambition or soothe some regret of her own, and then had buyer's remorse when he popped out and didn't live up to whatever it was she wanted from him. That's a really selfish way to bring a child into the world. I agree that she somewhat made up for that mistake by at least not keeping him and filling him up with all her disappointments, resentments, and unfulfilled expectations. But she went out of her way to have him, and then he just wasn't good enough. Harsh.

Maybe she'd only ever gotten girls. Not just Vaya and Venka, but also those other - unknown - fawns she apparently also had, so she honestly thought it was impossible for her to have anything other than (strong) girls.
Bit like the Halliwells; only girls for generations, then BLAM! Wyatt!

Pretty sure that was her last known act.

PostSubject: Re: Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided?   Go-Backs - a Tribe Divided? EmptySun Dec 27, 2015 12:30 pm

Yeah, well, Kahvi wasn't the only one involved in that decision. Windkin went ahead and got her pregnant, knowing she was basically out of her mind with grief, but no one talks about his decision to abandon her and his kid and fly off for who knows what reason. I always found him kind of boring, now he's an absentee father on top of it.

Honestly, if any tribe split up in the ten millennium of intervention between time travels, it was the Go Backs. They have the drive, the survival skills, and, unlike every other tribe, a sustainable rate of reproduction. Sorry, Wolfriders, even a lifespan of thousands of years and genetically targeted reproducing can't make up for a low birth rate and a high mortality. The Sun Folk are in a similar boat. The Gliders are dead. The Wavedancers are basically Wolfriders underwater.

The Go Backs have already been shown to have split apart and formed their own peoples, in fact. Teir's family was shown to have been at least partially descended from Go Backs. And the only member of said family who was actually shown to be dead was his father(for no visible reason. Are Go Backs possibly still mortal?). And they clearly also made their way to the new land, so we know they're resourceful and far ranging.

But I forgot, WARP has apparently decided that doesn't count. So instead of Go Back descendants, we get two life ages who will probably turn out to be elves we've met before, and a spirit elf. Oh, and mushrooms, which is probably what the authors have been on for this whole series.

Eh- I think that was the agreement they had. He never wanted to be a father-- he was just a sperm donor. I don't blame him. He just did her a favor.

A favour would have been saying, "You're not in a good place to be making that kind of decision right now, so ima have to say no."

What he did, given that he was probably more sane than she was at the time, was irresponsible as a friend and sperm donor.

You are assuming he had a lot of the 20/20 vision that comes with hindsight.
