| EEEEEEEEEEEEE. So good. So much to love. - Spoiler:
(Kick-butt main female lead not only doesn't need rescuing (well, more than anyone esle) but is good with machines AND is a force user. SWEET!)
So much to nitpick. - Spoiler:
(There is no way they were able to pull up after FTL travel. They are totally pasted against that planet. Which, btw, should not have turned back into a sun. The hey?!)
As a mom, though, I NEED to know: - Spoiler:
What happened with Rey's family? I am easily haunted by images of abandoned children crying.
When does the next one come out?

| This is all going to be spoilers. This whole thread is spoilers. If you don't want spoilers-- don't read anything on this topic! That said.... SPOILERSI think there should have been more emotional uumph to the big, important death in the film. And why does no one go comfort Chewie? Obviously Chewie was closer to Han than anyone. He left his wife, his job, his society-- and lost his ship. But he never left his wookie. That wookie was still with him. So why run to the girl you just met, Leia-- instead of your ex husband's best friend? Also-- the death star. Did the architect of the Death Star learn nothing from it's demise? They just built a bigger, more vulnerable Death Star. What was the point of that? It's exactly like the first one-- but bigger! And the solution for destroying it was pretty much exactly the same. Okaay. And what about that woman who dropped the shield for them? How bad was she at her job? Do you think anyone could have gotten General Leia to drop the shields on her people just because someone stuck a gun to her head? I thought these folks were trained from babyhood-- but here is this one woman betraying them, and Finn turning tail and running. The new recruits definitely ain't no Boba Fett! Otherwise-- good movie! Manga-- it's kind of obvious what happened to Rey's family, isn't it? - My theory about Rey's family:
Her dad was Luke Skywalker. After his nephew turned to the Dark Side, he (or the mum) probably dropped his daughter off to either protect her from being found by evil forces or protect her from growing to be just like her cousin. Then something probably happened to her guardians.

| One thing that stood out to me is I think there were a lot of lines in this movie that were straight out of episodes 4-6. Scenes and staging, too. I don't think it's a bad thing, I actually think it's a good short-hand way to get into the fictional world, but I would love to see someone run those scenes side-by-side. ___________________________________________________

| Ha, Outlier, that's exactly what I was thinking!
Luna, I've had the same thought about Rey's family but I don't think the timing works. She and Keylo Ren appear to be of an age and she would have been abandoned long before he was old enough to turn on Luke in a meaningful way.
Speaking of Ren/Ben, I hope that if there is a redemption arc for him, it involves his mother. The movies are so wrapped up in fathers and the mothers are mostly missing.

| No spoiler from me, but this : the previews were awful enough for me NOT to intend watching the film; the movie goes far too fast, no time to breathe; it was great seeing the old actors again; the dialogues were.. let's say 'poor', not much in them; strong emotional charge ( now that's Disney); the scenario is pitiful; no great charismatic figure emerges; too many movie effects for only poor motives. But I'm just... ...an old gloomer, I admit. ___________________________________________________ | |

My neighbor told me she and her boyfriend waited for an hour and a half to see it and ended up hating 99% of it. Her words, "JJ Abrams did to Star Wars what he did to Star Trek, stupid story plots and bad cinema." I guess I'll wait for Netflix... ___________________________________________________ Dubbed Streaking ADD Cowboy of Awesome Sagas by KindredSoul and nibblet

| I think it's exactly awesome as it ought to be. Just like the originals - a bit cheesy sometimes but full of fun and adventure. I was literally thinking that it's everything I wish FQ had been. And it has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so I'm not the only one. | |

And I'm ecstatic you liked it Manga...to note, I have talked with others who feel just as passionate as you do...its all subjective. ___________________________________________________ Dubbed Streaking ADD Cowboy of Awesome Sagas by KindredSoul and nibblet

| Honestly- it's not as sensational as the hype makes it out-- but it's still a good movie. I think you should still go see it. It's fun! | |

| I enjoyed it! But I'm also not into the mythology of the world. All the mechinations and politics was one of the turn offs for episodes 1-3 for me. I still couldn't tell you who everyone was or why they did what they did. And I don't know anything about the clone wars. So for me the paring down of the cast and focus on action rather than plot was a good thing.
I have a couple of questions-where did Rey come from? Why did Ben/Ren turn evil? Did Luke turn evil?-but they are big and simple ones, and other than that it was a couple hours of escapism, which is what I'm usually looking for in a movie. But I also really like what Abrams did with Star Trek, maybe again because I'm familiar with the franchise, but not committed to it. ___________________________________________________

As you said, I think this was thier very first meeting. I can't even remember that anyone mentioned Rey to Leia, and here she is giving her a hug. When I was watching it I thought maybe it's because they are both so in tune with the force that it gave them some kind of connection. - Quote :

My husband and I kept joking about this ala Forrest Gump - We flew down narrow channels - again. We blew up the Death Star - again. We fought with lightsabers over huge chasms - again. (Seriously - what's the deal with sci-fi movies and walkways with no railing over huge depths of nothingness?) (and sorry, I'm having a little trouble working with quotes on my tablet.) ___________________________________________________

| That's funny! The other thought that occurred to me was that now we know what happened to Voldemort. He retired from trying to kill Harry Potter and began working for the dark side of the force. | |

| NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY KILLED HAN SOLO! You can't just... kill Han Solo!
And what the fuck kind of ending was that? Now we gonna wait three years to know what happens! They could at least have let us see Luke's reaction to Rey coming with the saber! But, no... instead they give a big-ass cliff hanger ending! ___________________________________________________ "When you do what you love best, you shine where you love."Come play the Who Am I game!

| To be fair, it's my understanding that Harrison Ford doesn't care for "Star Wars" and this at least is a decently dramatic way out that fits with the mythic style. Also, actors love death scenes. | |

And yet, despite that, he put on the role of Han Solo like the rest of us would put on a favored sweater. The swagger, the snark, the love for Leia, the friendship with Chewie and the way he reached out to Rey, all of it; it was such a perfect fit, and he stepped into the role so naturally. It's like Mr Ford never left the franchise. ___________________________________________________ “Stay drunk on writing so reality doesn’t destroy you.” - Ray Bradbury.

I had both of these thoughts, too! Also, Kylo Ren (without mask) somehow reminds me of a young Severus Snape... something about the nose, and that hair... I refuse to believe that Han Solo is dead. We did not actually see a corpse. *hugs the Wookiee anyways* I like Rey. Also, she'd be quite easy to cosplay. Great to see the original actors return... even greater to see the Millennium Falcon soar again. ___________________________________________________

| Okay... I have a personal - if somewhat silly - theory: Supreme Leader Snoke is actually pretty short and uses the whole giant hologram thing to seem intimidating. ___________________________________________________ "When you do what you love best, you shine where you love."Come play the Who Am I game! | |

| So my friend Maico and I typically do a podcast about comics (a few times, we've mentioned ElfQuest, and the folks at ElfQuest.com cut that portion of the show and hosted it on their site with a link back to our site, which was super kind of them).
That said - this time, we did a podcast strictly on The Force Awakens. And normally editing (which often takes more than a total of 16 hours to complete, because I cut and move things around, cut out dead air, remove "ums", etc) to make it flow better - but this one, despite the time it took was sensational fun to do because of the sound effects. If you're inclined, check it out:
http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/522
And if you liked it, please share it around. Word of mouth does wonders and costs nothing!
