| As we have discovered, there are several fans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books here! So let's discuss our favorite books and characters and so on. And if you haven't read Discworld yet, give it a try! Good ones to start with are 'Guards! Guards!', 'Mort', 'Wyrd Sisters'... and others. Although it's a series, most of the books are stand-alone and can be read in any order. My favorite Discworld novel is 'Monstrous Regiment', and my favorite character is from that one also, a certain caffeinated vampire called Maladict. Characters I identify with include Ysabell, Agnes Nitt, and Glenda Sugarbean. And I think it is quite likely that when I get older I will become Nanny Ogg. *insert Hedgehog Song here* ___________________________________________________ | |

| I discovered Discworld through "Mort", which I randomly picked up in a bookstore on a trip to the Oregon coast in 1989. "Witches Abroad" is my favorite, although I'd recommend any of the books with the witches or the City Guard to start with. "Jingo" was great because it took the City Guard and Lord Vetinari out of their element, with some very colorful results. Favorite characters? Oy, where to begin!... - Nanny, of course-- because the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. Also, bananananana dakrys. - Sam Vimes. (I love the illustrations where he resembles Clint Eastwood, even if that's not who Pterry envisioned for him. Can I plead being a Yank?) - Death, who really deserves a hug. - Granny Weatherwax, the most badass witch on any world. - Mustrum Ridcully, who's quite a decent guy once you get past his robust lack of sensitivity. | |

| If I remember right, the first one was 'Mort' for me also. I was 16 at the time and found a lot of myself in Ysabell. I read them first as translations in Finnish, but decided to try one in English, and never looked back. I think they improved my English grammar and vocabulary. Also, I joined some Discworld-themed mailing lists on the internet and was soon discussing the books with fans all over the world. I have three big fandoms in my life: ElfQuest, Discworld, and Tolkien. I like/love a lot of other stuff too but those are the ones I consider myself to have actively participated in. ___________________________________________________ | |

| I just love almost each and every book by Terry Pratchett I read. Trouble is... I read only the translation into French ( which, very much UNlike the translation of Elfquest, was incredibly GOOD, for it even managed to keep much of the initial sense of humour ! A miracle ! )
Therefore, I happen to be a little lost about the names, sorry. ___________________________________________________

Lol, in that case, I'd say you've got a good thing going there. It might not always be comfortable, but you want a woman like that in your corner

| Looks FAB! And absolutely unrecognizable. ... you - not the character! Tho I have no clue how the character is supposed to look like. What I see is great, Leanan. *claps and bows* Congratulations for the award! ___________________________________________________ Indem du etwas tust, das dir oder jemand anderem gefällt, erschaffst du bereits einen Wert. | |

| I haven't read that many -- maybe a dozen? I like the witches because they know you don't need a friggin' +5 volcanic glass athame, just the right attitude. I also like the guards because by and large they attempt to maintain whatever integrity a bunch of mostly-degenerate mostly-morons can manage. Sometimes I like the moralistic aspects in his later books and sometimes I don't so much; either way, the earlier Rincewind nonsense isn't my cuppa. And I like the clacks for the nerdiness of character encoding and mechanical hacking. | |

| Thanks for the cosplay comments! Yeah, most people mistook me for a guy I think... Anj, I share your dislike for the Rincewind nonsense. Can't make myself read the first two books ('Colour of Magic' and 'Light Fantastic') anymore because they're kind of silly. ___________________________________________________ | |

| Not Discworld, but Pratchett
I bought The Long Earth series a while ago to read when I get time off. Now I'm coming up to the end of a very long project, I'll finally get to take the plastic wrap off the box set.
Has anyone read these? ___________________________________________________ Zebbed as the First Lady of Naughtyniceness! Cast as Petalwing in the EQ Forums Movie Dubbed Google Queen by Kindredsoul

| I have read the Long Earth books. Many fans don't like them because they're different from Discworld, but I enjoyed them. The Long Earth is a fascinating concept. ___________________________________________________ | |

| Late to the party as usual but here goes.
I love all the Vimes books, Witch books, and Death books (...so all of the books...)
I was most emotionally compromised by Thud!, particularly the bit where the Summoning Dark is confronted with the Guarding Dark. ("...imagine how strong I must be.") Like full on baby sobbing there.
Ditto to Monstrous Regiment, Witches Abroad, and Night Watch.
Has anyone read the Tiffany Aching books? Are they worth investing my lifeforce in? (I mean it's Discworld the answer is yes, but still.)

| I haven't read all the Tiffany Aching books yet, but the few I have read I really enjoyed. I had a free audio book of the shepards crown, I liked it but I didn't get fully involved in the story, so I ended up just buying a physical copy. I have to say, turning that final page made me cry like a baby knowing that it was the final book ___________________________________________________ Zebbed as the First Lady of Naughtyniceness! | Oh god. Oh god. Well, we'll just add that to the reading list then. I think I've been in denial...if I don't read the last books then it's not really over, is it?
(It will never really be over, because Sir Terry gave us this world and these words that cannot be taken...GNU Pratchett.)
