We're just trying out a little something for PRIVACY purposes here.

The site is now set where one can only read threads if one is logged into the site.

Otherwise, as a "guest", one cannot read/have access to reading threads.

Feedback is MOST WELCOME to this new adjustment! So please feel free to share!

PostSubject: Re: Feedback on Site   Sat Mar 10, 2018 6:05 am

I had a night to think it over and give feedback while I'm fully awake now.

May initial reaction was "Awwww... WHY?" Sad I remember how I was a longtime hidden guest on the SOC before I dared to make an account. I seeked information, got attracted by the community and learned their ways before I became a member. I even learned that what I considered quarrels were just lively discussions which stayed respectful.
As the SoC was the first and only community I really got to know it is my ideal. And - as weird it may sound - having almost no bounderies and no keylocks gives me the feeling of savety. The savety of former days where doors were open, every stranger was a welcome guest and no keys needed.

But the SoC is a nostalgic thought.

I've never forgotten what our Holt, our community and some tribemates especially experienced shortly before and after the SoC was frozen. And right now with this anniversary being close I'm even more aware of it.
Sometimes I've read comments on FB (as a lurker and guest XD) or quotes brought in here that made me wonder. There where days when I looked at the "guest count" with slight suspicion and wondered whether there may come trouble again.

You are our host, Kin. You and Nibs and Shaman are the fierce protectors of FTH and of the tribemates gathering here. You feel like some more protection, some checks before we share thoughts with strangers, is needed? It's a sensible thought.
All I wish for is to keep our place safe. No unnecessary trouble for those in charge. Tribemates who can speak their mind freely.
And ... I want to be safe, too. Embarassed

Access for "Members Only" is not even an unusual setting. It's quite commen from what I can judge in the meantime. Go for it. Smile

And thank you for the safe home you offer. I love you

Erm.. I would not have joined if the forum was locked down a couple of months ago.. How can someone find the community when it's completely closed off? Okay maybe a part of the forum in Blue Mountain mode, for coziness and privacy, but surely not all of it?

The admins collectively took this decision for the safety, security and privacy of our members, as we noticed some unsavoury activity around the site. I won't bore you with the details, but we did not take this action lightly.
Thanks for your understanding

Maybe it will be possible to open a window ... or even the door again somewhen later? I really hope so.

For now I trust in the judgement of our admins.

I think this is a terrible idea as it discourages new users. And we need new users.
What this says to a new user is "we are a closed group, and you will have to make effort to get in". When I see a forum like that I usually do not make the effort; I hate the "we are an exclusive in-crowd and distrust newcomers" way of thinking.

Also the privacy argument is bull. You're online, be smart about what you say! It's your own responsibility, not the forum's!

I've noticed this type of thinking before on other, small, fan run forums. Making it more difficult to join, and having strange and specific rules. This comes about as a reaction on a relatively small number of abusive users. In their efforts to deal with trolls, the admins forget what their first intention was; to keep the community alive and open to those who want to use it.

This forum is already small and has few active users. Discouraging new people from getting to know this community may well kill it. I beg you to reconsider!

And one last word: Lurking is not a crime. A person does not have to post to get value out of a forum. A person does not have to register to be part of a community. People often take their time. What harm is there in that?

I hear you Elwing. I undersand you better than you might think.

Like you I tend to avoid "closed groups". Not daring to knock and ask for entry before I know what to expect. I like to lurk and learn the rules and habits first. I was a long time happy lurker on the Scroll of Colors before I finally made an account.

When Kin and Nibblet suggested more "safety, security and privacy" and mentioned they had "noticed some unsavoury activity" I was remembered of the early days of my online home. The trouble Kin and Nibs got just by trying to help. A time when it was kind of dangerous to talk free in the box or in threads ... even when there was nothing said any of us would be ashamed to speak out loud again. I remembered that those troubles threatened to flame up again after the SoC was frozen and ill-willed spies tried to stake us out. And I am afraid that it might have started again.

I'm sure those window blinds and closed doors are not here to keep us exclusive. Barriers are not build up to lock out interested and shy lurkers (tho it sadly works this way). It is not to keep away the average troll either.

*sigh* I've just noticed that I'm still more afraid than I want to admit to myself. I fear that problems from the past could emerge again ... Embarassed against good reason.

I hope that the doors will open again and visitors will be welcome again without reason for suspicion. I trust in our admins, our tribemates to take council now and then to reconsider circumstances and needs and decide anew whether it's save to reach out trustful again.

We never said this was permanent or forever, Elwing.

We've also had and INCREASE in members joining since the site was set this way. 12 on the first day alone, and still growing Very Happy Out of all the new members who've joined, none have expressed any discouragement (to my knowledge) of having to join in order to see the site.

I wish you didn't see our privacy concerns as "bull", seeing as we went through some VERY BAD issues here at Father Tree when the SoC was shut down and I had to personally handle the SoC staff myself in regards to privacy issues here at that time. Things people said HERE were being used against them elsewhere. My reason for members privacy is very well justified, I assure you.

All opinions are always welcomed and considered. Cool Like I said, the settings were never stated as permanent or forever. Everyone is more than encouraged to speak up how they feel about the issues, good or bad. Wink

Okay, definitely too strong choice of words here. I don't know what happened, and is not right to be flippant about it.
I wish you didn't have to do this, but I respect your choices as this is your forum. I still worry that this may damage this community, which I think is rather vulnerable, in the long run. I hope you can evaluate this and reconsider in the near future.
A suggestion I have is why not protect some of the subfora that contain the more personal topics, and leave the ones with more general information open to casual visitors?

Of course you got more members. You took away their ability to lurk and forced them to sign up, that would happen to any other forum that made itself private.

I'm not fond of either staying logged in to read or having to log in several times a day either. Would it be possible to create a private and a public section?

I stil like the change, feels like our den-mothers are doing their best to protect the holt and its members. It’s sad that there’s so much negativity in this world, nice to see our little corner protected a bit extra. And who knows, if/when things calm down we can dial down the protected mode.

A public part and a private part is done often, so that sounds like a good idea to me too.

Actually we already had a private part before - the "Sendings". It's accessable for 'members only' from the beginning.

Though ... I doubt that a "private section" for more personal talk will help to avoid the risks that made Kin, Nibs and Shaman lock the doors. Sad Back in the beginnings the risky part were always the "on topic" discussions about EQ.

This right here.

It doesn't matter what's set to private or left public. It didn't matter last time we had problems.

I'm going to point out yet again that this was never said at any time to be permanent decision. But seeing as this has been pointed out as a problem (after 6 weeks?) then ok.

This forum had been privacy locked down for reasons in the past.  Partly issues with the old SoC, and partly due to the waves spambots and even better pornobots that used to spam the hell out of the threads.

The mods were trying to keep us clear of a repeat performance of that situation which was looking like it wanted to rear its head again.

Now?  Well, we'll see how it goes.

As for drawing in new members...  In this day and age, forums seem to be a dying thing anyway.  Most of a forum's guests tend to be bots, I believe, and therefore not an accurate measure of interest and lurking, at least in these days.  Most fandoming is done on platforms like Facebook, tumblr, and Discord. That's where people who are new to a fandom flock in waves.  I watched this with the fresh rise of Voltron. Even G+ has seen some resurgence in the RP community.  I've been watching forums, on the other hand, slowly flame out over the past few.  Of the dozens I've been on, only a few are still going strong. And of those, they've all got current active content still being produced of some shape or form. Or are RP focused.

Looking at the side scrollbar, there's more activity in non-EQ related threads than ones actually on fandom at this point. So, unless we are actively advertising the forum out there in some way shape or form, what with FQ done and over with, and not much left to discuss that hasn't already been turned upside down left right sideways and inside out over the past 40 years, I see having a closed forum be a bit of a non-issue.  It's now just mostly waiting for Wendy to do something new to have something fresh to talk about to give people a place to want to talk about that.  (Me, personally, I'm content to just sit back and wait and see if anything comes to fruition rather than debate what comes next at this point.  I'm both a Gn'R and an X Japan fan.  Patience while being trapped in Development Hell is something I have in spades.  And Yoshiki's Instagram is one of my happy drugs.)

I'll be quiet now and go back into ninja mode. I'll be on Discord, as always, if anyone wants to chat.

Forums. Facebook. tumblr. Discord. Whatever comes next. And thereafter.

I'm too old to adept. :/ Too tired to rebuild.
And I don't see how those new formats can do better than a forum. Or at least equally good. That's why FTH is so important to me.

But I guess Forums and my mind are just hard-wired the same way. And apparently both are outdated. XD

I agree Em. I don't have Facebook at all. I'll stick with this as it is. I get to visit with friends and meet new people from other parts of the world. Even if it seems only a limited amount of threads be I g used, I find that there is still much to learn.
