Thank you very much for the detailed description of Itsa! I have a commission to complete but after that I would like to open a thread called Artworks to PC's FUTURISTIC TALES. I ask you for permission because it's your creation. Just want to express my love for your ongoing tales in a creative way...keep up the good and beautiful work! <3

I would be HONOURED ! You have my permission, selbstverständlich !

BUT : Pleeeeeze call it " Artworks for futuristic tales ",
because this thread here is NOT 'mine' alone.

Now, for more details about Uuudzi :

. The five genders are identified mainly on adult subjects, for they display five different types of flowers, the MAJORITY of them indicating the exact gender of the Uuudzi
( figure varied flowers, in size and colours - I'll let your imagination work, dear  )

. This species was identified as a sentient species ( by the less dumb spacefaring civilizations ), because of their ability to HELP colonizing a world. Uuudzi can turn swamps into fertile lands, they can greatly help in FIXING soils ( against sea water, even ), they biologically stop most of the mosquitoes (or the like problematic insects), and they can even extract the many and varied metallic deposits ( gold and other rare metals ) that abund under marshes and swamps.

. Their mobility is biologically explained by the fact this species is a MIX of a fungi creature and a plant creature, in total symbiosis, from roots to tendrils ; the inner biochemistry thus creates chemical and mechanical effects that express by an extreme mobility (for a 'plant', I mean)

. Their 'brains', mainly located at their roots' level, is also a result of that extremely interacting symbiosis: the sap conducts the signals, and the chemical reactions at the fungi-plant interface insure the speed and complexity of signal treatment, just like what happens, in other ways, in animal brains. Conscience is but the consequence of one step beyond : the signals get reflected towards the brains itself, in part. The 'pictures' the Uuudzi can produce are but a reflect of their perceived environment, but on a tactile and chemical basis (not visual or auditive), but slowly established and extremely precise, in full 3d, with even an ability to anticipate (or see in reverse) the development of living things around. Uuudzi are thus perfect gardeners, for they foresee thus the way the natural environment will evolve, around them, and they can also rather easily identify the CAUSES for this or that problem, by using their 'retro-envisioning' ability.. and their own intelligence, of course.

( In case it's still not crystal-clear...
Yes: I am educated in the field of study called ecology. )

Ooooops... Forgive me : I forgot to describe the fungi part of Itsa.

Figure it as an extremely complex and dense inner network, just like the veins and arteries network in our body - no: more like our network of nerves.
Its colour is an intense violet. Its aspect, when revealed, being that of some dense moss filaments.
Unlike the 'fungi elves' of the Final Quest, they do not contaminate what they touch, because this 'being' lives in EXCLUSIVE and total symbiosis with the plant part of Uuudzi. Up to the center of their flowers !
They give some various violets hues to the extremities of the tendrils ( and a tendancy towards deep violet for branches and even the trunk, but dark violet patches, barely discernable from the dark brown trunk itself ), and are well observed on the roots, especially when they emerge, the plant part of the roots being almost white, and the fungi network being visible as violet veins.

This fungi is extremely active, at the biochemistry level, allowing Itsa to even separate metals from stone : the roots pulverize the soil and stones, and the fungi chemically act, thus producing very pure "pebbles" of metal, whatever the metal (or almost, not aluminium : it would ask for too much energy ). Uuudzi can then offer such pebbles to anyone interested.

This also applies to crystals and various semi-precious stones, that they tend to fragment into small pebbles, that they then polish and show, at their emerging roots' level, thus attracting the birds and some small animals ).
( Unfortunately, this ALSO attracts many smugglers... )

The symbiotic system also explains the variety of genders ( five ), the fungi part having its own needs and ways.

( I imagined Uuudzi in knowledge..
..of what wonders Nature can produce... )

( But.. No matter how much imaginative I may be..
..life, on our Mother Earth, already proved to have a FAR better imagination ! )

I wish I could use the function "citation" with my mobile phone.

About the art thread: I will call it as you suggested. It's an honour for me, really. I deeply admire this thread. Your imagination is more than fascinating. It's deep and reflective, very creative in it's inventory and full of wonder for life, different species, nature, technology, ecology...life!

...your have an excellent brain, PC! ;-)

Thank you so much for the further in detail explanation of the Uuudzi as well as the fungi part of Itsa.

Yes, 'mother nature' has a great imagination... it's because of God's glory reflected in nature. And He obviously gifted you! The art of storytelling is hard and complex... you've got to think it all through until the end before starting to write I guess...to make sense.

I read about two kinds of writers. The explore and the planner. The explore writes, not knowing where the story will take him or her. Not knowing the end while in the process of writing. The planner has...you guessed it...planned it all through. Stephen Hawking said of himself being an explorer. I wonder what category you are in. Very Happy

Because, when I was a kid, I was able to improvise.
Not anymore.
Age does that.

Echoes

In orbit around the planet Makibza IIIc, the Palace met a 'medusa' spaceship again.
Like the one that had allowed the Palace elves the first contact with interstellar civilizations and trade.
This one simply travelled through that stellar system, as slow as ever, but it detected the Palace (since Sunstream decided to make it visible to it) and it emitted a message to their attention.

The picture and symbols were clear : some traders had some important information to trade,
and they proposed a rendez-vous at a discrete management station for a mining company, in the system Haax, a peaceful sector of the galaxy.

What was worrying was.. the traders were Shingouz.
In the message, these small ugly creatures explained they had learned of the trading opportunity only by the Yuudzem, a being who was legendary for its ability at divination, and that being had told them the 'medusa' species would be the intermediate for finding the best client for what the Shingouz wanted to trade : they just had to mention to them : " Teleportation ", and they would understand.
And they did.

Meaning that the existence and activities of the Palace elves were still mostly secret.

What the elves knew was that the Shingouz traders always came by three of them, were excellent bargainers, but..
..they were desperately honest, they never lied, and they almost never cared what information or elements they were trading, nor with whom.
Hence, dealing with them asked for wisdom.

The elves discussed, and Sunstream convinced them the best way would be for him to go there with the special spaceship.
It was charged with magic, energy, nuclear 'fuel', air, water, food, everything needed.
Nêvem had ended bringing and testing some improvements : three small powerful, pulsative and precise ion-beams cannons, integrated inside the huge fins, designed to shoot, in focus, straight in front of the ship to 'clear the path', thus emptying space of rocks, dust, and even gas. It helped greatly in sparing the shell shocks.
Nêvem insisted on telling him those cannons might also serve as terrible weapons, if need be...
..but Sunstream sternly told him he would NOT use them to destroy enemy ships, ONLY to neutralize them. And only in LAST recourse.
" Your problem... ", was all Nêvem had to answer to that.
Two Titacta would accompany Sunstream, in this...
One resembling a glowing sphere, hosting and interfacing an evolved artificial conscience, able to pilot the ship while the elf would negociate at the station.
The other one, a well armed Titacta, who would serve as an escort, and for checking the rendez-vous place, first :
Sunstream could see and hear and even smell and touch through it, from afar, and it was very agile, well equipped, and highly trained. It even had an invisibility cape.
Both were perfectly in resonance with Sunstream's mind, and he could 'pop' them just as easily as he would 'pop' himself from and to the spaceship's spheric capsule.

Fur-fur would stay in the Palace, in the Garden.
Sunstream had hesistated, but the spaceship could hold only enough magic to insure Sunstream's magic shield, in the station.
Not Suntream's AND fur-fur's magic shields, if there was trouble, there.

When the small spaceship popped out from the Palace, there remained five days for accepting the rendez-vous, at 67 light years from there.
Amply enough, considering the ship's travelling ability.
Even if it didn't 'pop' as far as the Palace, of course, 'popping' was enough :
the nuclear bursts the three reactors could emit, with the typical light blue series of flashes signing the Cf disintegration..
..were reserved for extreme speed and maneuvers.
To observers, there, it would look like 'teleportation', for sure... Moreso that the spaceship was veryveryvery difficult to detect.
The reconnaissance Titacta would have almost three days to make sure the place was safe.

One day proved to be enough.
There was no trap, no ambush.
Only three teams of miners, their usual individual weaponry against pirates, five mining ships around, with only light armament.
And the three Shingouz, with no weaponry, only a detection device. It seemed to be a rather good one, for it detected a presence, when the Titacta explored the set of three rooms the Shingouz had been waiting in, for ore than two months, already.
They simply reacted as if their 'client' had come, sitting at the table, waiting.
Sunstream knew those creature HATED waiting, which meant the deal HAD to be an important one !...
Mentally, he smiled : " Well.. They will wait a little more. "
However, following the procedure previously discussed with Nêvem, Sunstream offered himself some security.
The reconnaissance Titacta ended its checks in the station. Still no sign of danger.
The small spaceship would take some speed way our of detection range, and then pop back into orbit of the moon the station was located on.
And Sunstream would pop right into one of the rooms.
At ANY sign of danger, the other Titacta would warn him with a short signal, and Sunstream would have eight heartbeats to come back to the ship.
Past that delay, the ship would enter escape maneuvers, but it would come back later for allowing Sunstream to pop inside it.

Sunstream was now in the room, invisible, the Titacta in guard, outside, allowing Sunstreal to check on the miners' activities.
The three Shingouz muttered, irritated, but then they sat, and waited.

Sunstream showed himself at the minimum rate, a mere halo of clear light, barely visible.
He didn't sit, standing at some meters of the table.
And he calmly said, in the galactic 'standard' language : " Your rendez-vous is accepted. State the deal. "

As usual, the shingouz trio spoke..

..in three consecutive voices.

Soft, insidious voices, testing his emotions, Sunstream noticed.

" We first have to show you.. "
" ..the recent developments.. "
" ..of the war waged by the Ksarr. "

As he expected, the danger came from what was to be traded...

The Shingouz activated a set of recorded holo-news, showing the terrible defeat the Ksarr fleet had suffered.
There were enough details to confirm Timmain's plan had succeeded.
Maybe beyond her expectations, for the damages were huge, and the global war plan of the Ksarr had even dramatically changed.
Two Ksarr generals had been executed.
Nineteen systems had been lost, among the eightry-three systems ruled by the Ksarr.
And... Most delightful of all... The Ksarr had not understood AT ALL what had happened :
They had KEPT the Adjura, not believing, not figuring for one second that this machine could have been the cause of that disaster, and it was obvious to Sunstream that this hacked war machine Timmain had traded back to them..
..had CONTAMINATED two other Adjura !
Sunstream remembered it had been an option, for eight 'conscience pearls' had been hidden inside it.
And the damages were limited to the Ksarr war ships and military structures.
Sunstream mentally concluded from that set of news : " Excellent ! And it is only the beginning of the end, for the Ksarr... "

The interest of the Shingouz about those events was easy to guess : this turn of events was considerably shocking and surprising MANY spacefaring sentient species, in the four sectors of the galaxy concerned with the Ksarr expansion and domination plans.

" The Yuudzem told us.. "
" .. we could meet someone who would sell to us .. "
" .. information about what was causing this defeat. "

Sunstream pondered...
He told them : " This deal may interest me ONLY if the Ksarr do not learn, until their ultimate demise, what I can tell you. "

" The Yuudzem warned us.. "
" .. we would have to accept that condition .. "
" .. hence we shall sell the information only to some foes of the Ksarr. "

The elf asked : " What do you have to sell ? "

One of the Shingouz cautiously extracted a small device from his small bag and put it on the table.
Sunstream detected no threat, and he noticed it was a holo-projector from a highly tech species, reserved to the elite of some far away sectors of the galaxy.
He even knew it was a low quality copy of a hi-res recording.

The Shingouz openly showed they had selected only some pictures, as a demonstration of the whole recording's content.

And what Sunstream briefly saw.. was SO interesting, SO unexpected, and SO intriguing.. he knew he had to accept the deal.

However, he took some heartbeats to think.

He finally asked : " Why not the high resolution recording ? "

The Shingouz were a bit surprised and upset, but they answered :
" The Zeeer Network is VERY concerned.. "
" ..about illegitimate copies of their diffused shows.. "
" ..and we could not afford risking a trial. "

Sunstream hardly refrained from laughing out loud.
The Shingouz never lied, but they would not admit they could simply NOT afford buying a hi-res recording.
When the representatives of the Zeeer species said " Elite ", it meant.. the richest among the richest.

He guessed he might now taunt them, by saying : " I could simply buy one. ", as Nêvem would undoubtedly have done, in such a circumstance..
..but the Shingouz deserved some help from the elves, for their species was barely above the "lumpenoid" status, most trading species disliking trading with them... And NO Shingouz EVER enriched itself, personally : EVERYTHING they earned through their constant bargaining ways ended in helping their homeworld. 'Desperately' honest and sharing ways, yes...

Sunstream said : " I accept the deal. "

The Shingouz had glimpsed the blurred shape of the long saber, through the halo, and they had probably guessed it was a weapon...
Sunstream assumed they chose to apparently 'ignore' its presence, just like Sunstream had chosen to 'ignore' their detection device ; they would not learn much from it, anyway...

He simply said : " One Adjura was hacked. "

The Shingouz quickly understood it was information enough.. and they admitted the value of that by snatching their equipment ( bags, where the detction device was ), leaving the room, the recording still on the table.
Amused, Sunstream perceived they were a little vexed.

When the Titacta confirmed they had left for good, hurrying towards their small ship without trying anything foolish, the elf thoroughly checked the holo device, but there was no tracking system, no trap, no joke : the show had been entirely recorded. Low-res, yes, but in full.

Still no problem.
Sunstream and the Titacta popped back into their spaceship, and, after some checks, it popped back to the Palace.

There, Sunstream showed, before all the elves, what the recording revealed.

It was a spectacular show, presenting an event that occured very rarely, but that was very well organised.
A duel between two of the 'real elves' the Palace elves were looking for.
Both had a special saber, resembling a lot Sunstream's one.
Vibrating, with micro-dart projection.
One a red saber, synthetic ruby, the other one a blue saber, synthetic sapphire. Almost identical. Only extremely subtle differences.
They dueled for the owning of a spaceship resembling terribly the one Sunstream had created.

However, Sunstream had noticed MANY differences.
The sabers were simpler, far less adapted than his.
The spaceship was larger, its shell mainly made of special high pressure gold, probably far thicker, with much armament, and with nuclear propulsion, meaning they, too, knew and used a spheric anti-G capsule ; however.. Sunstream guessed that ship had FAR inferior characteristics, when compared to the one he and Nêvem had created and improved.

Even before the duel had begun, Sunstream had understood. It was NO coincidence.
The date of the event, and the galactic sector where this show was recorded.. had told him what had happened.
The saber they had.. came from the Thri-Kreen.
The spaceship he had 'invented'.. Its design was a mere mental ECHO of theirs, the audience's mental reactions being emitted almost simultaneously.. and received and amplified by the Palace, and then by his brains, when he was mentally designing it !
Simple as that.

The two dueling elves were dressed almost in the same way, only the colours changing, red and blue, not much more elements differenciating them...
Both of them were five-fingered, taller than Sunstream, almost the size of Timmain.
But their faces presented VERY different personalities !
The 'blue' one had a cool, respectful attitude, very calm. Clear blond hair, almost long, braided carefully. A male, young adult.
The 'red' one a female, young adult. A little younger. She was excited, her hatred barely kept at bay, scowling, at times. Very short white hair.
There was a form of short salute, on both sides, and it began.

In the show, that elf species was NEVER named. The duelists were NEVER named, only referred to as " Candidates ", #1 and #2.
But it was explained that it was a duel to death, and the loser, if still possible, would have their brains extracted, healed and preserved, and coupled to an artificial conscience system, and would exist only to SERVE the winner aboard the won spaceship !
Every needed surgery equipment was ready. A sinister form of advertisement...

The Palace elves were deeply shocked, at hearing those explanations, in an enthusiastic tone, as if it was normal...

First the dueling elves moved slowly, studying each other, circling, attempting some moves and approaches...

The arena was wide, the ground was firm, a special surface adapted for fighting at best conditions.

All elves soon witnessed how extremely trained those elves were !
Their moves and attacks and defenses were extremely fluid and FAST, the recording indicating how much slowed down many scenes were, in order for the audience to fully appreciate the fight.
NO elf, aboard the Palace had ANY training allowing that kind of performance. By very far. Even Sunstream...
...and they all gasped, all along that 'show'.

There were MANY wounds, on both sides.
The micro-darts were poisoned, and with a very potent killing poison, but both opponents dodged and even obviously anticipated most dart attacks in advance.
And the Palace elves understood the darts were mostly a THREAT, limiting and orienting the opponent's set of possible moves.
In two VERY different fighting styles.

And the 'red' "candidate" finally lost.
The fight's duration had 'only' been.. nine minutes and twenty-six seconds, standard galactic time.
But the Palace elves, and Sunstream, especially, had the strange feeling it had lasted far longer.

Sunstream felt deeply humbled by both elfin opponents' level at the fight with the saber.
And both had coupled that with a deep mastery of martial arts, even if no 'style' could be truly identified. More like a very well studied and carefully chosen combination of techniques.. a complex set of moves, incredibly adapted and improved.

Sunstream had learned MUCH, and he would scrutinize even more, and repeatedly, that recording, to be able, some day, he hoped so.. to BEGIN re-adapting his own training to try and reach... THAT level ! He could barely imagine how LONG it would take him...

He had also understood that each of them used some 'Feeling', 'Control' and 'Effect' techniques from the 'Force'.
It was subtle, but the zooming, for the show, even illustrated it, the vibrating edge glowing at impact, the precision of some hits far too high, and so on.

It had been NO 'sport', in fact, for it appeared that those "space elves" simply had NO choice in that system, separated into two different and very opposite sides, but to duel for obtaining ONE spaceship. It also implied a form of constant conflict between those 'red' and 'blue' elves, in some galactic sectors.
But Sunstream easily deduced they were DISCRETE... and FEW.
Some mentions, in the recording, indicated that those elves somehow originated from one of the forbidden sectors, but that their species had considerably adapted, in time, along MILLENIAS.
The 'blue' side was oriented towards building, helping, and protecting civilization.
The 'red' side was violent, never hesitating to destroy, wanting power above all.

Now, Sunstream knew who Palpatine's " Red Guards " were.

And the 'blue' side could, perhaps, become allies, for the Palace elves.

However...

The situation was far more complex..
..than what the Palace elves had expected.

Just want to say I am LOVING your new additions, PC! I will answer more in depth after the weekend.

It's my youngest son's FIRST birthday and I will have to bake FOUR cakes for relatives who will visit on Saturday and friends who will visit a day after... phew!

When I have a break I really enjoy reading your tales as they soothe my mind. It's a sort of healing escapism from everyday life...thank you so much for that. :-)

This only may happen rarely when I read a really good story. Had this feeling also with the early Elfquest (Original Quest with Blue Mountain etc.). But your storytelling is even more beautifully detailed (athmosphere, surrounding and for example we learn the inner monologue, the thoughts of Sunstream frequently) and exotic in terms of extraterrestrial creatures. I appreciate...

...so you're warmly welcome. :-)

I really enjoyed reading 'Echoes'! What a strange species the shingouz are...I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw the picture of the three of them. ^^ To me they look funny and kinda cute in a strange way. I like strangeness in general and thus, exotic creatures and new introductions of different alien lifeforms!

Real talk: The 'brain extraction' description creeped the hell out of me! Woah...like straight from a disturbing horror movie...(too sensitive for that kind of stuff). Please forgive me! Wink

What I really loved and find visually enhancing the story is that you make use of colour psychology in a subtle but meaningful way. Like, the blue elves being more peaceful and calm and the red elves more aggressive and power oriented/ egocentric.
So clever!

Sunstream seems cautious, but not too cautious. He is risk-taking and brave when the situation demands it. I feel like his character is maturing and growing with every new experiences gaining from his adventures. He may be still a dreamer - but he's also a hero! Like a fusion of the best qualities of both an adventurous action-hero as well as the mystic, kind-hearted dreamer we fell in love with when he still was a kid.

Yep. The elves we know and love are NOT ready for SOME type of advertisement...

And yet.. ruby and sapphire are both corundum ( Al2O3 ).

Wow...this is natural?

Maybe natural ( although some collectors are easily fooled, about such crystals ).

Corundum exists in MANY hues, the mostly red ones being called "rubies", the mosrly blue ones being called "sapphires", but there also are yellow, pink, orange, violet, black "sapphires"... and multicoloured corundum also exist.

The hue is only due to some TRACES of this or that element.

Piece of advice : ALWAYS have rubies and sapphires CHECKED thoroughly by an expert, when the size of the gem would indicate a high value, because... there exist MANY ways to fool the buyer.

Gemmology is a wonderful field of study.

Now, many elves, living in the Palace or not, intended to learn more. MUCH more.

Skywise had pointed manymanymany strange elements, indicating mainly that life had evolved in very strange ways and paces, according to the various positions of stellar systems, in the galaxy, relatively to eras and to their distance to the 'no tech' sectors, globally presenting the shape of a huge disc. That disc seemed to be shrinking rather quickly, lately, from an initial size that was probably the whole galaxy's size, only some scores of millenias ago ! And there were even far stranger things, among what Skywise had gathered, that far...

The Palace went back to the world of two moons to collect some elves, and the common mental and spiritual work began, many teams forming, in order to analyse more the global situation, with almost each and every bit of information collected that far.

Many elves were cocooned, like Sunstream had been, and most were offered the same conditions Sunstream had benefitted of, with their beloved ones near them, with the global, pulsating love channelled by the Palace invading their mind.
Sunstream had taught them all how to best exploit their thinking abilities by separating emotions from abstract thoughts, slowing the first, accelerating the latter, having their minds resonating with the global, shared, collective minds of most elves, cocooned or not, even linking teams.

It was time for guessing, thinking, sharing proposals and deductions, and so on.

This time, a healer was needed, because some elves, six of them, WANTED to try the brain transformation Sunstream had successfully accomplished.
Only Mender was daring enough to accept it and to supervise such hazardous tries.
Fortunately, Sunstream had learned enough about life processes.
After many explanations and an extremely cautious preparing, those six elves launched the same subtle changes on their own brains as those Sunstream had dared triggering on his own.

And it worked perfectly, this time. For each of them.

The global reflection quickly benefitted from this effect, and, only four days later, the conclusions came, as all elves emerged from their cocoons.
Most of them exhausted, trembling on their legs, barely able to walk.

Magic had appeared in many places, following exactly the process guessed by Sunstream, thanks to what Itsa had shown him.
Then, life and magic had established links, from creatures to creatures, and then from world to world, and then beyond.
It HAD caused HUGE catastrophes, all along, the loss of control occuring in MANY occasions, creating instability and monstrosities, some of them still wandering in the galaxy.

But it all started at least many MILLIONS years ago, when life had reached a high enough level of complexity on enough worlds, already.

And now, ALL the elves knew Sunstream had NOT been overly cautious in repeatedly warning them NOT to venture into the 'no tech' sectors.. for they now realized WHAT, exactly, were the 'deities' and 'Powers' : they were mainly entities concentrating EXTREME levels of magic, most of them more 'magic' than physically 'real'.

The galaxy was a sort of 'trap' : beyond it, even 'magic' could not travel, losing very quickly its own essence.
So... Magic was forced to be created, gathered, structured more or less locally or globally, and to BOUNCE back inside the galaxy, and then to DIFFUSE.
Magic was not lost, but it slowly created various non-material pouches, "dimensions".
And many beings dwelt, more or less completely, inside those dimensions.

In many CYCLES.
Each cycle separated in some "Ages" :
In the First Age, magic started by being locally very weak, but it bathed everything, almost the whole galaxy ; then, it gathered and focussed in some places ( remnants of the former cycles, mainly ) and it started following some linking paths (old or new), from world to world, bringing many sentient species along that travel, towards the center of the galaxy. The deities and 'Powers' had most of the available magic, and used it, be it to adapt some worlds' ecology ( or even far more powerful effects ) or to meddle with genetics and deform or create (or destroy) some species.
In the Second Age, the global instability of the galactic 'magic network' revealed itself brutally, tearing the global bath, and interrupted the various 'colonizations', mostly stopping the sentient beings in their travels : yet, their individual grip and power on magic woke up for good, and the first true 'magic users' and 'priests' appeared, extremely powerful. First aboard the colonizing vessels, then on the colonized worlds.
In the Third Age, many worlds even almost forgot the whole Colonization process and history, and the conflicts became very local, mostly limited at the planet's level, or even to mere continents, many sentient species losing much knowledge and abilities, because of awful wars and conflicts.
In the Fourth Age, some technology appeared, locally, and stronger and stronger nations combined technology and magic, and gained power, over more and more and even more 'magical' worlds ; the rise of terrible Empires.
Then some other Ages would follow, depending on many factors. With less and less magic, and more and more technology, and even (locally) some science.
The last Age being when magic seemed to fade away and then 'disappear', remaining only in the strongest traps designed for 'magic', that ended, then, to seem only a reserve of strange powers. Technology was high anew... allowing for new vessels to be build, and then to be used when a new Cycle would begin.

There had been at the very least HUNDREDS of such Cycles, at the scale of the galaxy.
With some Cycles failing or lasting very long, with extremely varied consequences.

And the ruling deities and Powers, inside the 'no tech' sectors, PREVENTED almost perfectly the sentient species they controlled... from getting access to technology. The elves guessed very few of Them could preserve even their own mental integrity, Cycle after Cycle.
But the elves now perceived the importance of that 'almost' word.
The Thri-Kreen case, for instance, was one of the RARE exceptions to that global and looooong mechanism.

The elves soon figured why those deities and 'Powers' feared science and technology : the sentient species thus held in ignorance would NEVER threaten the existence and power of their masters, or the huge dimensions they dwelt in and exploited.
For many dimensions were RESERVES of souls, of spirits. Imprisoning a MULTITUDE of them, Age after Age, Cycle after Cycle !

That global system of dimensions formed an enclosed galactic disc, in the First and Second Age.. and then an open, fragmented system, more and more diffusive of magic, from the worlds to the separated dimensions... until there seemed to exist no more magic on any world, most of it all being trapped into the dimensions... which could eventually simply NOT hold it all... and re-diffused much of it at the level of the WHOLE galaxy. And it all began again.

The elves were in awe, before their own, common discovery, born from so many mental discussions and mind sharing, but they were also measuring the incredible DAMAGES that cycling had caused.
Many wonderful sentient species and even whole civilizations had been destroyed, or had degenerated, or had been enslaved !

All of this merely because those powerful deities and 'Powers' wanted to get more and more and even more magic.. and would NOT share !

The Palace elves, forming an independant species of shapechangers, now knew for sure that they were..

..in grave danger.

Prison

Sunstream thought : " So... This galaxy is our prison. "

So far, he admitted he and other elves had found NO trace, NO hint of ANY species having travelled from or to this galaxy.
Not even robotic probes of any kind.
And the next Cycle would probably WIPE the Palace elves, far too dangerous for the deities and 'Powers' !
It was only a matter of millenias before the next Second Age.

Sunstream knew even stars had to die... but it took them BILLIONS YEARS to do so.
And HE would NOT accept such a fate for the elves, immortal or not, whom he had come to love and share with, for all this time !
Unlike Skywise and Timmain, Sunstream would NOT accept that !...

But the void, between galaxies, was SO void, so empty of EVERYTHING, including energy, that travelling from one galaxy to another seemed totally impossible. Even with the help of magic. In fact, the use of magic would only worsen things...

Brooding, thinking, he noticed the presence of Nêvem.

Strangely, Nêvem had stopped his task at checking the third special spaceship produced that far, to be piloted by one of the seven elves ( Sunstream included, Timmain excluded ) who had successfully adapted their own brains for the resonance.

And his inner resonance suddenly pushed and allowed him to STUDY Nêvem. To analyse everything about that android.
He realized he had never obtained some answers about Nêvem.

WHERE did it come from ?
WHO had built it ?
WHY was its inner technology THAT different, though subtly so, from EVERY technology known or heard of, so far ?
And...
Why was he NOW staring at him this way ?
Nêvem suddenly seemed upset, almost !
And Sunstream noticed subtle things : Nêvem's limbs were now discretely and slowly placing in a.. FIGHT stance !
Sunstream was FAR too used to the Thri-Kreen robotic training unit.. NOT to identify that !

There were other elves, around, most of them busy at their various tasks, preparing for the settlement in the third 'virgin' stellar system the elves would carefully colonize.. but, all of a sudden it was like only Sunstream and Nêvem existed, here.

Sunstream's advantage lied in his habit of SHARING.. and he immediately shared the situation.. with the PALACE !

He had already guessed since long that Nêvem could pry on elfin thoughts.
But now, Sunstream was even anticipating something else, and, in a flash gesture, he unsheathed his saber and he placed it in an intercepting position between Nêvem's eyes and him.

But just an instant too late.

Everything happened in less than one second : two beams of pure energy were emitted by Nêvem's eyes, the Palace was 'freezing' Nêvem and imprisoning it into a crystal block, Sunstream was placing his saber before him... but the beams began piercing Sunstream's skin and skull.

However, to everyone's suprise, the Palace ITSELF immediately healed Sunstream, regenerating the burned tissues and bones.

It didn't spare Sunstream the pain.. but he was alive, still standing, trembling and moaning with intense pain, barely able to hold his saber.
The crystalline sound of the saber falling on the floor alerted all alves around, and they saw the situation, Nêvem imprisoned inside a crystal block, and Sunstream now on his knees, in terrible pain.

But he soon recovered, and he shared with everyone what had just happened.

The whole community decided to scan thoroughly the android, and to analyse every data concerning it.
The Palace made sure the android would not self-destroy or deactivate itself, and it would even be fed with energy.
But it would remain imprisoned and constantly checked by the Palace Itself, like the Thri-Kreen training robotic unit.

It soon appeared that the technology that had created Nêvem came from NO known source, inside this galaxy.
And it could neither be hacked nor convinced to cooperate : it would keep its masters' secret about intergalactic travel at ANY cost.
About Nêvem's previous travels, the only hints pointed back to only one planet, inside this galaxy : the Earth.
Yet, it was obvious the humans, there, did NOT build it.
Some elements pointed to a species terribly resembling human beings, but blue-skiined, having settled on Earth millions years ago, unknown to humans, hence probably living inside deep, huge caverns, right under their feet !...
And that species came from another galaxy !

It was only after having checked for long that Nêvem had not sabotaged anything, all along its activities with the Palace elves, that Sunstream came back before the android, still inside the block imprisoning it, and he lock-*sent* to it :

Faithful to the end, are you...?
Now, THAT is a secret to be kept, indeed !...
How to travel from one galaxy to another...

Nêvem could have mentally answered, Sunstream guessed, but it kept silent.

Sunstream was now smiling, for he thought : " Knowing something CAN be done.. is the very first step. "
He thoughtfully caressed some part of his head, with the missing hair that had been burned by the rays.
It would leave a long pale scar.. and he would keep it. As a reminder.

For long, deeply meditating, Sunstream stared at the crystalline..

..prison.

Oh no! Sunstream first in this terrible pain and now an everlasting scar as a 'reminder' of such a terrible event! We are with you, our bright, shining elf-hero! Keep it up, Sunstream...!

...He matured soooo much. And now all these adventurous journeys, amazing insights, lessons and even life-threatening situations he has experienced so far...

..make him GROW and change. Mentally as well as physically (character development goals) !

Ps.: Creepy description about the advanced, blue-skinned species on earth living in underground caverns...I ALREADY had a cavern phobia...arghh....*laughs* ^^

I'm so sorry to hear that, PC. Phobia's are no fun. I just hope that it doesn't come in your way in everyday living, like the little crowds that can happen in shopping, outside in the city or such...I don't want your genius mind to be disturbed.

Caverns (like my phobia) I can easily avoid. Only once I got a little feeling of panic when my husband and son's were tickling me all at once, bending over me, creating a "cavern"!

But for your health and wellbeing I hope and pray you may be able to avoid crowds each day! I know it may sound a bit dramatic to an outsider but I guess people without a phobia wouldn't even understand the feeling of seemingly life-threatening panic ...I guess...maybe I'm wrong. Humans are the only species who can THINK themselves into another beings shoes, after all. ^^

No, they aren't.

But there are fears and phobias.
I simply FEAR crowds : I would NEVER go to a concert with such a mass of people as nowadays. Or in a concert room with such masses crowding the place as nowadays. When I was young, I DID go to concerts, but I stayed out of the mass. I never stood masses, even less finding myself inside them.
But it's a simple fear, not a real phobia.
Fortunately so.

But I admit that simply watching the historic photographs of the nazi masses sends me shivers.

Yay! It's good to read you don't have a real phobia. I believe I have the same effect with spiders. I fear them but a spider phobia like people who scream at them uncontrollably? Unfortunately, no (or I would have really looked bad before my children).^^
