Four chapters with six issues each - that's what I've read again and again. Issue #15 puts us in the middle of the third chapter. I guess I missed that. A little thing, but somehow it helps it all make a little more sense. So we have Chapter 1 - Ember gets captured by the Djun and finds the strength to deny Recognition Chapter 2 - This doesn't seem to be quite as cohesive but seems mainly to be concerned with everyone's choices in response to the palace's call. Chapter 3 - Cutter's identity crises. I wonder if chapter 4 will depend on all the other chapters and tie them together or not. Maybe Timmain knows she can't be split and wants Cutter to go in the palace, so the whole seduction of Skywise was to have his help in pressuring Cutter to choose the palace. Will it come down for Cutter to a choice between Leetah and Skywise? He said something about how long will they wait for him, he doesn't seem to know that Leetah's already made her choice. Maybe that's why she looks happy on the cover, while Skywise appears more apprehensive. It really looks like Cutter is maybe delusional and stuck in the time of the palace war. | Topic: Final Quest #17 | Embala

| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest #15 - Delayed. Wed Jul 27, 2016 11:08 am | This issue. Sigh. [All spoilers below] The art is the art. The newly created drawings continue to get better and better, as far as I'm concerned. There were even a few panels in #15 where Nighfall didn't look like a desiccated skeleton--win! The reused art continues to be a sticking point. If I see that paperdoll cutout of Moonshade one more time...Wendy has literally used it at least four or five times. And there's basically only one image of Korafay which gets its limbs jumbled from time to time. Sure, the Wavedancers live underwater, but that can't explain why Korafay has double-jointed knees. Noticed a few sloppy color errors, par for the course. - Zadzi wrote:
- Dr Dre gets a hummer from compost elves and then it's Woodstock time. Wtf.
Yup. There is definitely a "reach-around" happening at one point. I laughed out loud at the look on Dr. Dre's face. He's like "yeah, you know you want this. Hummmmm." And a lot of those fungus elves creep about at a very convenient height. I think it's inadvertently suggestive, which honestly just makes it feel a bit gross. Like, I don't think Dr. Dre and the others were really having an orgy, so why did they have to take off their clothes?? Do we get any explanation at all? Redlance's roll in all this was underwhelming. Our speculation on this board was way more interesting! Random question: who made Cutter (and Leetah's) new furs? Chitter? I assumed Moonshade was out of the tanning business. I love the idea that the fungus elves dislike Leetah because she's a healer. They've embraced the cycle of life, including the process of death and decomposition, to the point that her skills have become repulsive to them. That's pretty cool. Also, I'd bet that they're the what's left of the Rootless Ones, Savah's original group of early generation immortal elves. Humans scattered them and drove Savah's group into the desert, but maybe other survivors went into deep cover in the woods. Certainly, they seem quite magical, just like Savah herself. Of course, the way her name came up in conversation with Cutter was a little contrived, but it was still a cool reveal. I don't like the new explanation of Dr. Dre's powers. He brings the low high, and the high low, and hums everything into a stupor. WTF does that even mean. It sounds like he's the elves' drug dealer. I throw my hands up over Moonshade and Strongbow. I seriously care less and less about them the more time they spend mooning and angsting over one another. They're 1000 years old, but they act like teenagers wallowing in the drama of their failed relationship. And now Moonshade's internalized the idea that her self-exploration is somehow "selfish." Good job, Strongbow! Chot and Door are back. Fine. And Door's intentions are not friendly. It seems a little late to introduce a new villain. If only he'd come along sooner to inject some tension. Rayek/Ekuar/Two-Edge. This makes only the barest amount of sense. Why exactly did they have to confine Rayek? So he couldn't defeat the murderous human fleet...even though that's exactly what the elves need right now? He's powerful enough to kill every human in the world (according to him), why does anyone think the Djunmen stand any chance of harming him? And I can't believe the reason he's refusing to allow Winnowill to be healed in the palace is because he can't guarantee that she'll love him as much as he loves her. That really is "character murder." RIP nuanced-and-interesting Rayek. The palace-ex-machina has been removed from the board--Venka says violence would "poison" the power of the palace. Is that what happened to it when the High Ones were massacred in its halls? Did it have to go dormant to recover? In any event, this mostly seems like a convenient way to sideline an overpowered element in the story. It's clumsy, and a little ham-fisted, but it obviously had to be done somehow. The Wavedancers are the worst part of this for me. Not only do we see a ton of recycled art in their scenes, but the whole plot with Salt and Spray is almost incomprehensible. I had to read it several times to understand it at all. At first, I thought Salt was getting legs so he could walk to the palace...but then why was Spray getting a tail? Eventually, I realized they would both have tails for the ocean portion of the voyage and legs for the overland hike. But that is not clear. And why give Salt legs in the water? He can't "practice" walking. Just leave him with his tail until they reach land and shape him there. Such a weird, confusing, unnecessary scene. And Spray's proportions didn't look elegant to me for some reason. I always thought a Wendy-drawn mermaid would be incredible. Spray...was underwhelming. Ember is pretty harsh on Daboi. Yikes. Looks like the Wolfriders will reunite. Interesting that Sunstream and Brill are at the same impasse as Cutter and Leetah. Liked that detail. Shuna suggests that the Djunsmen are coming to conquer the humans of the Iceholt continent as well as to murder the elves. That's a really good point. Then she says that even a "peaceful" alliance of Iceholt humans and elves would be unlikely to defeat the Djunsmen. Uh, how about a non-peaceful alliance. Or are they just going to lay down in front of the tanks? Stuff like this is where the plot really frustrates me. I get that Wendy's a new age hippy, but if you inject real-world elements like imperialism, genocide, and asymmetrical military technology into your story, treat those themes with the gravity and realism they deserve. For me, this was not as good as the preceding few issues, both in terms of the art and especially the story. | Topic: Final Quest #15 - Delayed. | Wisp

- I think you're right when it comes to Moonshade but oversimplifying this when it comes to Strongbow. He calls Moonshade his "sole desire" or whatever it is he calls her-- but he's deceiving himself there. What he desires most of all is the Way. The Way is how he understands his universe. The way is how he makes sense of his own existence. In short, I think the Way is Strongbow's religion, and that the only way to make sense of the way he's acting is to consider it in terms of religion.
Wonderfully put. This is exactly how I read their relationship as well. I would only add that I think Moonshade, as his lifemate, is a part of "living the Way" for Strongbow, just like "traditional marriage" is a part of many Christians' practice of their religion. Cleaving to his lifemate (and having her cleave to him) is Strongbow's sole desire in that sense, because it is part of his understanding of the Way. It has to do with her individually, but also with the lifestyle to which he's devoted his life. I do think Strongbow has been as flexible as he can be within the confines of his "faith." He just didn't want Moonshade to go where he knew he could not follow, but Moonshade had to pursue her calling. I can't blame her for changing. Lunakat hit the nail on the head a few pages back. This was a common tale during the days of "women's liberation"--housewives realizing there was more to the world than child-rearing and three square meals on the table and endless housework. I think Wendy, given her age, is explicitly alluding to that time. It's pretty neat to see, however I find what women were moving towards in the '70s more comprehensible than what Moonshade finds in the palace. Newly liberated feminists were moving towards life--risk, reward, engagement in the world. Moonshade, to my mind, is retiring from life, and judging by her physical appearance on the cover of #15, erasing her hundreds of years of lived experience. I don't understand that, and I can admit that I don't much like it. That's my bias. We also don't understand exactly what the elves are up to in the palace or why it's so wonderful. That's a flaw in the storytelling, but not in the fundamental dynamic of the Moonshade/Strongbow story. - Namuhna wrote:
- OK, but if I accept that I don't see why they haven't just broken up years ago. So we're back to my original point, I just don't get their relationship and I don't get the draw of the palace, it just becomes a generic storyline with no heart. I need details, and preferably at least a discussion where they make their motivations absolutely clear. Strongbow needs to explain specifically what's up with his fear of the palace. And Moonshade needs to explain why on earth she needed to remove her wolfblood right now and preferably why she changed her mind in the first place. All that you said sounds absolutely reasonable, but it really isn't shown well and clearly enough for good dramatic effect. Unless they're keeping it secret for some big reveal.
I think it's been quite clear what's going on. Sometimes subtext can be a loud as a bomb. It's in Moonshade's expression when she sees Shuna giving birth, when Ruffel was struck by lightning, when Chitter sat on the baby bird and killed it. It's in all her interactions with Strongbow, and the look of peace and curiosity on her face in the palace (when Wendy actually bothers to redraw her face, that is.) I think it would have been worse storytelling for Moonshade and Strongbow to baldly state their feelings and thoughts--like Star Wars prequel-level dialogue. ("I feel angry. I feel sad.") Their relationship is in an interesting place right now, and I can relate to them more than ever before. I myself have made big changes in my life, geographic relocations and major career switches, and I had to weather those with my husband. I needed him to understand why I wasn't happy pursuing the career I trained so many years to do. It was a period of radical change in my life, which meant it was a period radical change in his life too, even though it wasn't by his choice. Fortunately, he was on-board with my decisions....nervous, confused, but on-board. But he's not quite as rigid and inflexible as Strongbow. Strongbow and Moonshade's dreamtime story highlighted that, second only to Cutter and Leetah, they were the "soulmates" of the wolfriders (or have been up to this point). Treestump and Clearbrook never recognized. Nightfall and Redlance chose one another, which is why I find their relationship so beautiful and relatable. But of all the original Wolfriders whom we know well, Moonshade and Strongbow were two-halves-of-a-whole, complements, absolute partners. I always see that panel of them from during the troll war (http://elfquest.com/read/index.php?s=OQ/OQ18&p=3), when the narration says that "to be relied on is all they ever wished," or their gorgeous full-page "spiritual portrait" from dreamtime, or the way they look at each other with complete complicity in the Hidden Years story about Lashpaw. This is why they didn't just go their separate ways at the first sign of trouble. They've grown in and around each other. | Topic: Final Quest #14 | Wisp

That's where Venka and Two-Edge had their little chat. Aroree is in the holt for some reason. I don't actually know where Rayek and Ekuar are. Ember's tribe are on another continent being led by Teir and Scouter. She and leftovers are at the holt. Cutter and the search party are MIA. At least some of the wavedancers are on the move--not sure who or why. I think that's just about everyone? Yup the trolls could definitely be a factor. Treestump's vision in Dreamtime was pretty ominous. I'm almost expecting things to get pretty bad before they get better. And also, it seems possible that the rescue party will have to find Cutter and bring him back in time to save the day. Still, we're not far from the half-way point for FQ. That's a lot of issues to fill up. I don't think the humans are going to reach the holt in issue #15. The story is progressing in 6-issue "chapters." Chapter 1: Ember captured, ends with recognition delayed. Chapter 2: wheel-spinning passage of time, ends with Moonshade giving up her wolfblood and Cutter going crazy. Chapter 3: the meat of the action--will probably reach a climax with an attack on the holt and turning-point with Cutter/the fungus elves (just a guess). The 3rd chapter in the 4-chapter story should be the climax. Chapter 4: resolution and disposition of the characters--who stays, who goes? | Topic: Final Quest #15 - Delayed. | Davrille

| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest #14 Wed Mar 23, 2016 12:10 pm | I guess Filcher was, literally, an old friend. Doh! In all fairness, I found his death extremely touching. He died as he lived, with his face buried in Cutter's old socks. <sniff> Got to say, this is probably my favorite issue of FQ so far! I think the line art is 80%+ very good, and like Lunakat said, the annoying coloring wasn't quite so obvious (although there was one panel of sadface Strongbow where he had the same complexion as a body on a slab. Awful, putty gray. And Venka's new outfit is garish and terrible. Speaking of costume changes, I guess when an elf reaches the palace they automatically get a generic silk gown in "their" color. Ahdri and Moonshade are essentially wearing the same dress. This makes it feel even more cultlike ("Accept these robes, initiate...") I also had a hard eyeroll when Moonshade started preaching to the Go-backs ("There are no limits. Here, drink this.") I really liked the sequence where Leetah almost fell into the sinkhole. She's always been a bit feline to Cutter's canine, and in the panel where Dr Dre holds her up, she looks like a cat being held by its scruff. Made me chuckle! I think Wendy's in top form with her drawing throughout the Cutter sequences. You can really feel how he's drifting mentally and emotionally. All these disturbing, surreal images jumbled up--Filcher's skeleton and Joyleaf's skull--that's dark! We all deserve a gold-star for guessing the direction they're going with the fungus elves. It is very original. As far as I can figure, they feed on decomposing flesh that lands in their dell, and they're just waiting for Cutter to expire so they can consume him. The "linked" sending circles strongly suggest a communal mind. I could pick out 2 females and 4 males. The most prominent female still looks pregnant to me, but I think that's just a "bole" on her abdomen. I wouldn't be surprised if these elves are extremely ancient, perhaps even High Ones. It would make sense for High Ones or 1st generation elves to revile the elvish form that got most of their friends killed. I love both the concept and the execution of this new tribe. I had to laugh when Aroree showed up in the Holt. Girl gets around! I almost think she (and Treestump and Clearbrook) where there so that it looked like Ember had more elves to manage. Otherwise, she ditched her tribe to hang out with Yun, Pike, Newstar, and Ohler. I do think it's sweet that Ohler is 100% on-board with Newstar's mortality. Their relationship is just a bit of background color, but it's quite nice to see. Newstar's wolfrider duds are very her. While the art was great, I really didn't care for the rhyming poetry in the text. The meter wasn't too great, and...rhyming doesn't seem very "delirious" to me. It takes a little too much mental coordination. The only part of the story that really didn't work for me was Venka's confrontation with Two-Edge. I do agree that she needed to confront him in some way about his decision to give the humans firearms, however I don't understand the point of the conversation we saw. She basically just railed at him while he had an emotional breakdown in front of her. There was nothing constructive in the exchange, and she came off as a bit cruel. I realize she had a traumatic experience, but it still feels out-of-character. Venka is cool, calm, and collected. I feel like she would show him the ramifications of his actions in a gentle, yet unflinching manner. There was also a lot of plot exposition packed into her rant about Rayek and Winnowill, blah, blah, blah. I'm am so bored of Winnowill. I wish they're tie her to a piece of the palace and launch her into the void of space, never to be seen again. She is a terrible antagonist, and the humans are even worse than she is. The prospect of having her and Rayek and the humans taking up more space in a future issue is very discouraging. Finally, I have to register my strong dislike for the cover of #15. Moonshade looks horrible. Why is her hair so long? It looks like a complete nightmare to deal with. Is she levitating her gown to cover her bits? What's wrong with Strongbow's hand? Also, if she completely shape-changes into High One form, she's really giving the lie to the still-the-same-Moonshade talk in #13. She's really changed everything about herself, inside and out, which is absolutely her prerogative, but it's no wonder Strongbow's distraught. | Topic: Oddest EQ theories? | Shadowpath

By any other name (in the Readers Collection "In all but Blood") Hidden Years #5, #6, #7, #9#5 Starfall, Starrise - pre-EQ1 (story about Skywise and his parents' fate) #6/7 How Shall I keep from Singing - High Ones' arrival and first years #9 The Enemy's Face - story from Leetah's birth and youth Homespun (in the Readers Collection "In all but Blood") Spotlights on the time of the Long Wait (disappearance of the Palace until Big Sleep) Hidden Years #1, #2, #3#1 Wolfwood - during Long Wait (centering on Strongbow - I love it) #2 Going Back - during Long Wait (Kahvi "visits" Sorrow's End again) #3 Little Patch - during Long Wait (Tyleet's "cub") The Jury (?) New Blood #11, #12, #13KahviBackground story of the Wavedancers Wavedancers Issue #1WavedancersWavedancers - lost chapters (unfinished) ... it might be less puzzeling to read it after Discovery (some inconsistencies and retconning) ---------------- Somewhen in not too far future Rogue's Curse - following Rayek's journey after Shards/Final Quest Far future JinkThe ReblesFuturequest (unfinished) -------------- I have not listed EVERYTHING here! The rest of New Blood is a mix of Wild Past, Long Wait, various Misc stuff ... many of it considered non-canon same for Bedtime StoriesElfquest Volume 2 - containes stories that are mostly listed and reposted in collections (ask if you want to know more ... same for stories I missed to mention) Kings Cross - a "What-If" / alternative universe story ... Xanth - something totally different There is no easy way to read through - you'll have to pick when you want to follow the timeline. As you will notice some of the stories can be found in several topics. The Elfquest Vol. 2 issues have several ongoing stories in each issue - and then and now a single one. Many of these stories are gathered in collections: Dreamtime, Wild Hunt, Wavedancers, Rogue's Curse, Wolfrider! to mention just a few. You can stick with the gatherings to follow my suggestions ... Elfquest Vol. 2 is a read for completation when everything else is done in my opinion. Don't hesitate to ask in case you need more information - or help to find some issues/collections. Welcome to the pack Enjoy and have fun! Good read! | Topic: Dewshine's Den! | Embala
