| Her eyes were closed in concentration. Sweat dripped down her face in salty streams as she clung tightly to the shaped stone framework that arched over the fireplace. “Keep... playing... Vok!” she gasped out. Then, between one breath and the next, the baby slid out and into the waiting pile of leathers. A triumphant smirk pulled up one corner of her mouth as she gazed down at her tiny, wailing daughter. “Well, that answers that!”
“And decisively, “ Urda chuckled. She placed the wrapped babe in her mother’s arms, then brought a steaming mug to the exhausted elf’s lips. “Here,” she said, “get yourself on the outside of this.”
Reluctantly, she took her eyes from her daughter long enough to shift one arm free and settle herself, baby, mug and all while she waited for the afterbirth. It had been a long, draining night for her and she wondered briefly if Recognition births were any easier. The thought did not last long; the pressing concerns of caring for the baby and the last stages of labour soon crowded out all else. Soon after everything was over, she was asleep.
The door slid open and he whirled, mid-pace. “Well?” he demanded, eyes searching the bundle in Urda’s arms with greedy intensity. “A girl,” she announced simply, handing the bundle into his reaching arms. “A girl,” he repeated, a thoughtful smile pulling at his mouth as he pulled the blanket away from his daughter’s face, searching the dark little visage for something only he knew.
“Didn’t live to see noon,” Urda told her brusquely. The sun was in the wrong part of the sky; the shadows were stretched long and from the west. It was not pain that pressed the air from her chest; it was more like a sudden, crushing absence of sensation. Tears pricked at her eyes. Had she really slept through the last and only hours of her child’s life? The pain would be terrible later, she knew, but for now she allowed Urda to continue roughly chivvying her to get up, to eat, to continue with life.
His eyes flicked up when Urda came in but returned quickly to the baby in his arms and the leather nursing-bladder filled with deer’s milk. “They’re off?” he asked.
“They’re off,” she confirmed. “Brr! Without so much as a salute. Elf’s iced over, that’s certain. You could make her laugh sometimes. She was beginning to like you... Are you sorry?”
“Nope. When that one likes you, she lays claim! I’ve no use for that.”
“Smart. But it’s the lying that doesn’t taste right.”
“Had to. I wanted her blood running new in our tribe – her fawn, raised my way. That leaves Rayek out!" Kahvi smiled smugly down at his daughter. "Rayek`s the same stuff as that wolf-chief, Cutter. Meant to do great things but likely to stumble trying to manage too much. She`d be in our way and we`d be in be in hers, if Black-Hair knew." | |

| And then!?!? I assume with the role reversal, Venka has entirely different upbringing and outcome!! Riiigghhht? Although... I also want to see how you would interrupt Rayek taking off with infant Venka too... to see how he would have raised her. I would assume him doing that would completely change the entire EQ storyline all together Doooo eeet >__> ___________________________________________________ Compliments go to Embala for bringing a British cat and an American dog together via Photoshop! chibi cutter compliments of katcombs! | Let's say, Rayek would have developed more father feelings...would he even sing a sweet lullaby for baby Venka? Would she make him forget all his anger and frustation to become a better person who would understand family values more? I'd love to see. Also, Cutter losing his familiy fo centuries was far too cruel, wasn't it. ___________________________________________________ If you see a Fairy Ring In a field of grass, Very lightly step around, Tip-Toe as you pass, Last night Fairies frolicked there And they're sleeping somewhere near. ~ | |

| Rayek has, from the beginning, been focused on being a father. (Not solely, I grant you. ) He wanted Recognition with Leetah and pushed for it. His first thoughts on seeing Ember and Suntop are "Your little ones, Leetah... Their skin would have been darker, their eyes a different hue, if..." And of course there's his nurse-maiding of Khavi. I think he'd have been singing Venka a lullabye almost from the first time she was put into his arms! And feeding a newborn would have left him far too busy and tired to go on any field trips, authorized or not. See? See the harm Khavi's lie did?? | |

| Oh yes! Khavi's lie was too cruel...!!! But Rayek has always been misunderstood, that's how Wendy intended him to suffer. Poor Rayek...he really had a great potential being a good father. Hmmm...I wonder what Leetha-Rayek-cublings would look like! They would be full of magic powers indeed! .......At least Leetha still is there for him from time to time (after the Cutter-Rayek duel when Cutter got his family back). She has the biggest heart. Still, that didn't save Rayek to become this: | |

| Leetah would do much better if she left him alone, the terrible little flirt that she is. | |
