I like Ember's character growth through the series! As a child she was blunt and self-assured, never bothering to double-think her choices - because she knew she was going to be chief and she thought that entitled her to know best. But as an actual adult - and chieftess - she's riddled with doubts and second thoughts. She makes mistakes too, and they have repercussions on her and her tribe. But the way she deals even with those mistakes is very consistent - she faces the consequences of her actions, and is more than ready to run risks herself if that means others won't have to suffer for it. Just think about her shock and dismay when she realized her holding Recognition at bay was very nearly getting Teir killed; she had really hoped his head would be clearer if she could withhold the call of Recogniton - but the moment she realizes it's biting HIM, not her, in the tail, she sends for help - entailing her family in the Djun's machinations, which was something she had avoided as long as she could. And this selfless streak she displayed as a kid too; sure, she pushed and prodded Suntop to "go out" and warn Savah - but took up all the blame when Strongbow showed up.

Hmm... got a bit of a question:
Would you argue that Ember - at one point - was a student of Strongbow? Right before Cutter left on his initial journey he did tell Ember that Strongbow could teach her everything a young chieftess needed to know...

In OQ8 Moonshade also says that a chief's cub belongs to all his tribe. So I'll could see that the twins, especially Ember, were mentored by Strongbow (and all the other Wolfriders, too) at some point. Properly after Leetah warmed up more to the Way of the Wolfriders, maybe since they lived in the Forbidden Grove?

I'd say that's a reasonable assumption, LurkingCat.

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but when Cutter left on his quest he told Ember that she has much to learn from Strongbow. Plus it helped when Leetah wasn't wasn't about Ember showing Choplicker who to scent a trail. Well, only if she didn't sprout fur and a tail.
