Wendy is a great artist and has produced a massive amount of ElfQuest comics. Her style has changed many times during the years, and she has embraced many different techniques. As fans, I think we all have that one story - or book - or just one picture - that we especially like for the quality and style of art used.

So, what is your favorite art in ElfQuest? A story, book, era, etc.?

Also, what is your favorite EQ art not drawn by Wendy?

My favorite non-Wendy EQ art is a little doodle Lorraine Reyes did when someone complained about her drawings of Ember and Dewshine being too busty. They included it in the letters section of one of the "EQ Volume II" issues. It has SD (super-deformed, that strange manga/anime-influenced drawing style where characters heads are almost as big as the rest of their bodies) Ember, Dewshine, Scouter and Tyleet. Poor Ember and Dewshine now have boobs the size of beanbags and they're leaning on them. One of them (Dewey or Ember) says something about wishing Lorraine would stop it. (On a side note one says "ouch" and the other says "ouch twice.") Scouter's eyes are the size of dinner plates as he stares as them. Tyleet is standing behind Scouter with a very fed-up expression and hefting a giant mallet. I tried to find a copy on Google to link to, but couldn't.

For Wendy art, the image coming most to mind is the panel where Leetah tells Rayek "his love would demand too much of Suntop." The expression on her face is exquisite. She's clearly trying to tell a hard truth with love. And there's something about the coloring and the shading in my FTP book (which doesn't always have the best of either) that really rounds the image out.

My favorite is Hidden Years. The colors are simply exquisite.

Favorite non-Wendy art: the 'New Blood' story titled 'Moonshade' by Lea Hernandez. It has a manga flair to it that makes it different from the rest of EQ. I find it very cute, slightly fan-art like but in a good way.

Also, every single picture Carol Lyon has drawn of Skywise. *loves*

I think Hidden Years is my favorite too. I can't even imagine how much work it was to produce, so I'm not surprised Wendy moved on from that style. Out of that collection, Little Patch is tops both art and story-wise for me, but I think Wolfwood is also an incredible achievement. It's amazing how much emotion is conveyed in that story without words. Basically tied with "Little Patch" as my favorites are OQ issues 16-20 (the troll war). To me, these issues are peak Wendy. Even though I love the style of HY, I'm not sure the art anywhere is better than at the very end of the OQ. That's just my opinion.

I generally prefer EQ art not by Wendy when it doesn't depict canonical characters. I just don't think many people can do Wendy's art justice. But I did quite enjoy HY 20, the one with Hummer and Buckthorn. It's just a sweet, lighthearted story and I thought the layout and character design were very bright and active and engaging. I also like "Colors," a Timmorn story in BOTC #1, which had a pretty haunting watercolor style.
