Buren stood at the edge of the beach, the tide washing across his feet. The chilly winds and water did not affect him. As a child he grew up in the snow. Over time, his life had changed drastically. He had gone from a Chief’s son, to an Outcast, and now a lover of the very “demons” his father had sworn a war upon.
Stream approached him from behind, wrapping her arms around him. “Your thoughts are distant.”
Buren clasped her hands that had been on his chest. “After finding the Silver Fish holt – and being reminded of my own people – I have been thinking of my father. My mother.”
“You wish to go back?” Her head was pressed against his chest; she could hear his heart beating, and the rhythm never quickened.
“I have thought about it repeatedly,” he admitted openly. “It’s been exactly another season – to this very day – since we drove my father and his tribe away. While I may have never gotten along with my father on many things – my mother always loved me. Cared for me. In many ways, you remind me of her – because your love does not come at a price or expectation. It’s simply love.”
Stream felt her heart sink and she slowly released him. “I understand. If I could see my father and mother again, I do not know if there’s anything that could stop me. If you must go – I understand.”
“As I said,” he turned around and faced Stream. “I’ve thought of it. But I know, even if I built a small ship to sail back to my father’s lands – I would have to make this journey without you. And – as long as I draw breath – I can not imagine being far from you. Even for a day.”
Stream hugged Buren closely and wept into his chest.
