| The stagnant mist was slow to rise, clinging throughout the mountain terrain like a murky snake that entwined itself around the landscape of rock and slate. Further below, the hills and marshlands continued to slumber beneath the thick blanket of haze. Although there was a sharp chill in the air, the rising sun promised of warmth to come.
Wordgazer rested within a small nook of the cold stone, wrapped and snuggled in her furs as she greeted the peace of a new day in her own silent gratitude. She would never again take for granted another sunrise. But before her thoughts could lead to dark memories, her soft green eyes glanced down to catch a glimpse of the activity below.
From within the Lair of the Black Crest, two young elfin figures appeared to venture across the wide, flat stone that served as a safe overlook to the world below they remained hidden from.
She had always learned and knew more of her Clan by simply watching them. And she did so now in her quiet vigilance with a loving smile, already predicting the actions to come.
They were always the last to fall asleep and always the first to rise.
They were the first to discover trouble, if they weren't the ones causing it.
The two younglings could have passed for siblings by their common mischievous personalities, and thought of themselves as much. Being so close of age at eight and nine winters, they were both anxious for any kind of adventure.
As they stood dangerously close to the cliff's edge, there appeared to be no sign of any fear that they could possibly fall to their doom. All it would take is one unexpected gust of wind to give a push, sending the pair toppling over into a spiral fall of death. Yet the two pairs of youthful eyes stared down the infinite distance with more wonder and curiosity than fear.
Jeppe playfully kicked a rock to plummet out of sight through the thick mist, but even on a clear day, one could never see the ground. Their chief saw to that. He made sure to find the highest refuge where no predator could ever reach them, let alone see them.
The growing wind blew strands of unruly, sand colored hair across Jeppe's face and into his eyes. As he brushed it away with annoyance, his boredom quickly caught up with him. "Want to go into the caverns today?"
Since venturing the grounds below was strictly forbidden, audacious play had to be found within the safety of Black Crest. His companion only sighed and shrugged as he ignored his own auburn hair that flew across his own face, tickling his nose. His bright green gaze stared out to the horizon with a silent wish for something new to entertain their youthful energy, but for now, Bloodwake suggested one of their same activities to start the day with. "We could try to get those rocks unstuck again."
Knowing the argument to come, Jeppe's dark grey eyes rolled skyward. "You muddle head! I told you there's nothing there!"
"Yes there is!" Bloodwake snapped. "I can feel the wind seep through the cracks of the rocks! That alone proves something is behind them!"
Ever since they stumbled upon the hidden rock slide with the deep caves, Bloodwake had become strangely obsessed about getting through that wall of rocks! With a snort, Jeppe looked down and kicked a dust of pebbles over the cliff again. "Even if there was another cavern, who cares? We have so many now, that we still get lost! What do we need with another one?" The wind seemed to understand the argument between the two younglings and chose to take Bloodwake's side by tormenting Jeppe and flopping his unkept mane over his face again.
Bloodwake sighed and slumped his shoulders. Now it was his time to kick the dirt. "Well, it's something to do anyway," he grumbled under his breath.
While slapping his hair away from his face again, Jeppe knew he couldn't argue with that. There was little else to do but practice their aiming or hunting skills with relentless badgering by the elders, or boring duties like skinning hides and drying berries. If the two younglings found something fun to do before the Clan woke, and also kept themselves out of sight, then they were less likely to be put to work!
Before their decision of the day could be made, an unexpected and warning voice growled into both of their minds. **Step away from the cliff before I drag you back by your ears!**
Already knowing who the voice belonged to, Bloodwake and Jeppe turned their heads slowly with sheepish grins to see their chief standing across the vast distance of the overlook within the entrance of the Crest. His steel gaze continued scowling silently from the shadows as they shuffled their feet safely away from the edge. The younglings had been warned time and time again, day after day since they began to walk, for their recklessness around the overlook, and their obvious guilt caused a deep blush to spread across their cheeks.
Shaking his head slowly, Zebula returned into the Lair with full confidence that the pair of younglings would disobey him again as they so often did.
Wordgazer was rewarded with a hearty chuckle. Sure enough, those two were back at the edge of the cliff as soon as their chieftain was out of sight. Zebula must have expected this, for within moments, two angry mothers came charging out of the Lair to retrieve their disobedient younglings. Greymoss, with Jeppe's left ear in her grasp, and Niblett with Bloodwake's right ear in her clutches. Both scolding and dragging their giggling youngsters back into the Lair for a whole list of chores to keep their boredom occupied.
The day did prove to be pleasantly warm, although the sky remained covered with an overcast of clouds simply coasting the same course they have traveled since the birth of the world itself. As the wind came and went, Brace closed his eyes and diverted his attention way from the sounds of clashing of steel below him. Upon the same jagged ledge, he stood everyday to listen to the wind and its secrets. His unique connection allowed his senses to be minutely in tune to the world's 'spirit', as he defined it. Only he could understand and such a gift even bewildered him.
As the breeze welcomed him with its unseen embrace, he took a moment to relish in the feel of the passing caress before giving the wind his ear. Peace and contentment enveloped around him as the winds spoke of the lands below as they should be, with life upon it playing out its daily role of survival. The playful stream of air continued to swirl around him, lifting the ends of his cloak to form waves in its current. Brace smiled at the taunting game he received and finally gave into its demand to be heard. As he pulled back the hood from his head, the wind immediately swam through the dark strands of his hair, illuminating the chestnut highlights when lifting it to the light. The cross current swirled about him and crossed again to play at his ears, bringing yet another joyful smile to his lips.
Just then, another voice also reached him. "What has the wind to say?"
Brace's smile widened as his soft green eyes looked to his side to find Arthis climbing the ledge to join him. "The snow will come early," Brace replied with a somber sigh. “Better enjoy what's left of our calm weather while it lasts.”
Arthis playfully scoffed at the warning as he situated himself to sit beside the speaker of winds and dear friend. “I rather enjoy the cold and snow...” He replied while gazing off into the distance with hues as blue as the sky itself. “Makes for more warmth time within the furs.” Feeling the eyes staring and the silence that followed, Arthis turned his head to see Brace looking at him with an amused eyebrow arched over his eye with a matching grin lifting the corner of his lips. Arthis gave a blink before looking away, as if clueless to the source of his companion's silent mirth. “What? It's true! Who enjoys holding and sharing during the dreadful, high heated days of the day star?”
Brace couldn't help but chuckle at the reason, yet found himself nodding in agreement. “Well then, you have plenty of “warmth time” coming, by the way of the winds and the snow to come, my dear Arthis.”
Suddenly, the shouting below broke the tranquility and humor of the conversation.... "Weakly mush toad! Can you do no better than that?!"
Steel against steel began its song once again as Blackbird now laughed at her opponent's effort to thwart her attacks. Lostshard twisted his body and took several steps away to regain his senses and his wits, and with his Twin Blades in each hand, he prepared another tactic. "Mush toad, is it?" He sneered with a taunting wink.
Blackbird held her weapon firm, yet relaxed, as if it were a part of arms itself while twirling it above her head. The long staff and crescent shaped blades at each end made a whiling sound before she swiped it down toward the ground with a mocking smile across her lips. "If one is so slow," she teased in return.
Lostshard ran toward her and she poised for defense. His jagged blades came swiftly, but not in time as she caught him off guard again. Dropping to one knee, she blocked his charge with her blade latching against the steel teeth of his weapons and twisting them out of his grasp. Lostshard just stood and watched in a stupor as his Twin Blades flew into the air. This was why he wasn't prepared for her leg to swing out, striking the back of his calves to sweep him off of his feet and land painfully on his rump.
Cheers and laughter spread throughout those on the overlook that watched the practice spectacle. Blackbird stood over her victim, her ice blue eyes full of mirth as she gave him her hand. "Nice try, mush toad," she chuckled.
Lostshard sighed and smiled in return before shaking his head in defeat. "Mush toad it is...” He took her hand and rose to his feet. "But was the kick necessary? I'm going to feel that for days!" During his whine, his hand carefully massaging his now sore rump.
"Perhaps we should find someone to rub out the pain for you!" Another female voice piped up from behind, and with a swift smack to his backside, Arfurido walked around him to be rewarded with his scowl. She found amusement to Lostshard's present suffering, although she truly did care.
His usual grin soon reappeared. "As long as I don't have to tend to yours. I do no favors for no one," Lostshard taunted with a gleam in his eyes as he sauntered off in his own way to retrieve his weapons. Arfurido simply grinned and rolled her eyes at his back before turning to Blackbird who was now cleaning her prized blades. "Well done! For a weapon that size, you still amaze me at how you handle it with such ease."
"Much to Quelin's talent, as you know, chieftess," Blackbird beamed with pride as the steel gleamed under her inspection. "I am still amazed myself as to how light it is to maneuver in my hands! His skills never cease to surprise us!"
Yet another in their company spoke as he was sharpening his own weapon while sitting upon one of the nearby boulders. A deep voice, but with a playful lilt none the less. "And I thought who trained you would get some of the credit?" Blackbird looked over her shoulder with a saucy smirk while adding thick arrogance to her tone and words. "Just because you are chief does not grant you credit for everything a Clanmate achieves."
Zebula raised a single brow as the petite warrior tossed her bright sun colored hair over shoulder and left him to watch her walk away. Arfurido chuckled at her brother as she walked toward him. "She has a point. I have yet to see you challenge her in practice."
He gave a "humph" when returning his attentions back to his blade. "Should I dare to be such a fool, sister, the Clan would be left with only you to lead them."
"Hmmmmmm," she pondered aloud with merriment dancing in her eyes and her slender finger tapping lightly against her chin. “An interesting prospect....” The siblings shared in likeness the same eye color, but when angered, Arfurido's hue would change to a stormy blue. For now, the light shade of grey was sparked with humor. "Perhaps I shall have her challenge you after all....”
The same sharp eyebrow raised up again as Zebula shook his head with a sly grin. "Didn't you speak of wanting a hunt today?" Arfurido playfully slapped at his leg. "That's the only way you could be rid of me!" She chuckled as she turned to retreat back into the Lair with eager haste. Daylight was wasting!

| Yes!!! The Elventies are back! *does a great big happy dance* And what a start, getting all the characters lined up and ready...just a great beginning. I really liked the sassiness of Chief Arfurido, just like I remember her in the grand old SoC! ___________________________________________________ Dubbed Streaking ADD Cowboy of Awesome Sagas by KindredSoul and nibblet | |

| ((My apologies for taking so long with the chapters, but with adding art to them as well, it's a bit more time consuming along with the dreaded RL schedule we all have to attend to The following chapter is just more of an introduction to more of the Clan and their interactions. There's only one art piece to this chapter, as per requested by truelight. Hope you enjoy )) Arfurido casually walked into the Lair to be greeted by laughter. She stood for several moments just inside the grand stone archway to simply watch and listen. Younglings were running about within the massive cave, which also served as enough space for the council gatherings. It was the very center of their dwellings within the Crest that served as their home of fortitude. After their hunts, the kill was also brought here to be rationed, and nights of story telling around a blazing fire were shared here. And just like now, the cave also served as the perfect romping ground for younglings at play.
The chieftess remembered a time when the young feared to laugh, or even make a sound, while their elders spent most of their time listening... waiting...watching for the “unspoken ones” who sought out the Clan. The young ones of now were fortunate never to know of that fear. Arfurido and her brother endured it once after generations of safe seclusion. Once was all that was needed to revive the old fears. A time they would never forget, nor allow to be relived if they could prevent it. Especially after their father sacrificed his own life in order to keep the Clan hidden and safe. His daughter still bore resentment for his decision, but she kept it locked away, knowing there was no other choice. She wanted to live on honoring his memory... not despising him for it.
Dravear was what some called a secluded chief. Not because he avoided being with his tribe. He was a dutiful and well respected leader, who thrived having his clanmates around him, needing him. Nor was it for speaking less than any of the others. He was swift to advise and teach when needed. He balanced fathering two younglings while protecting and guiding his clan. He was secluded for the foreboding secrets that lied hidden behind his eyes. Those, he rarely spoke of, save for confiding with his soulmate with whispers after certain nights of suffering nightmares. Wordgazer never spoke of her beloved's confessions. The Clan knew what needed to be known. Premonitions brought fear and confusion, and both she and her lifemate chieftain agreed that the Clan needed to remain strong and focused for whatever may come.
She could only hope her beloved's visions were wrong, but knew deep down, they never were.
But Dravear found himself failing to protect his tribe. And so, Arfurido's father proved that daring risk and sacrifice were needed in hopes to preserve what was left of their existence. Such desperation led to one more death that left her father beyond despair, even beyond the reach of his own beloved. His sense of reason abandoned him the moment his brother died in his arms.
It was his own breaking point. Blinding rage could not be dissuaded.
But if it wasn't for that very moment Dravear tapped into such forbidden darkness, those left to survive would've eventually been erased from this world. He set out to thwart their predators. Alone. He never returned. The secrets remained kept. The vulnerable, wherever they thrived now, were left ignorant for what was to come.
"I'll get you!" A youthful voice shouted and shook Arfurido from her haunting memories. Thatida now gave a determined chase as Sedinis laughed and dodged her younger friend while holding out a shimmering object to taunt her with.
"That's mine, Sedinis! Give it back!" Thatida was one of the youngest of the Clan, having lived through five winters now. One of the many fortunate who knew nothing but the safety of Black Crest. Small she may be, but her speed and agility were remarkable for one so young as she caught Sedinis by her leather top and yanked her back as hard as her tiny arms could muster.
"Alright! Alright!" Sedinis shrieked and giggled as the merriment gleamed in her mahogany eyes. "I give up!" She handed the shiny rock back to her furious companion while shaking her head with amusement. "Must you throw such a fit? It's only an old stone!" Sedinis was a just a full turn of the seasons older than Thatida, with the closeness of age bonding their friendship just as Jeppe and Bloodwake were. Her long, dark tresses flopped about in a heap upon her head, now in disarray from their play and her dark eyes were full of mischief.
Thatida stuck out her tongue as she glared with sky blue eyes so like her mother's. But unlike Scarlett's golden mane, Thatita's ebony locks bounced against her small back as she stormed away to replace the stolen gem with the rest of her collection.
"Sedinis, what have you done?"
The youngling turned and smiled innocently at her mother with her hands clasped behind her back. Dreamwalker just sighed with a grin, knowing deep down her daughter's act of thievery was meant only with playful intentions. "Mind yourself, youngling.” Dreamwalker reminder her daughter with gentle firmness in her voice. “You know how Thatida feels about her trinkets." Her green eyes flashed a loving wink. But just as her daughter was about to make excuses for her behavior, Sedinis suddenly piped up with energetic cheer with her dark eyes lit up as she skipped around her mother in full haste. "Crossblade!" Her voice rang out and echoed as she ran toward the burly warrior.
He had just awakened and emerged from his own den, stretching his arms with a long yawn when the other younglings heard the name shouted and came running from all directions. Thatida was immediate to follow Sedinis, and by the time they had reached him, Jeppe and Bloodwake came charging out of nowhere. Just shy of ten winters, young Wildfire came running from the opposite corridor. Then another who was born a season after Wildfire was Raindancer, who came barging out of her family dwelling to greet the elder with the rest of them.
Six younglings in all climbed all over Crossblade as if he were a tree, all the while chattering and laughing. Being the strongest of his Clan, their weight was no burden to him at all. Jeppe was at his back with his small arms wrapped around the elder's neck. Bloodwake was thrown over the left shoulder; Wildfire was thrown over his right. Thatida wrapped herself around one leg while giggling hysterically as he shuffle-walked with her still attached. Sedinis held tight to the other leg and called for Crossblade to walk faster. Meanwhile, Raindancer decided that Jeppe would have to tolerate her weight behind him as she leaped and held onto Jeppe's legs.
And so, Crossblade staggered on, never feeling happier. As he passed his chieftess, he gave a sheepish grin. "I will return for the hunt shortly," his low voice murmured. His shaggy brown hair appeared to be painfully stretched by all that he carried around his head, but when it came to the younglings, he never seemed to mind if their antics gave him any discomfort. And though his life had suffered more battles than any of the Clan, his golden eyes shined with as much youthful as the younglings that hung all over him.
Arfurido found herself smiling again. With a sigh she knew the hunt would have to wait, but there was another who was watching the antics within the lair from a distance, and was not so patient.
"We should've left already," Tamrin grumbled for the countless time as she continued to sharpen her daggers simply to pass the time. This was to be her first hunt and her restlessness was pressing on Quelin's patience. He took in a slow, deep breath while struggling to find his patience for the impetuous youngling. While he continued to mend Lurker's weapon, Quelin spared Tamrin a glance to find her still staring out from their dwelling with her dark eyes filled with annoyance. She was just as impulsive as her mother was, but Tamrin only knew of her mother from what memories Quelin had to give of his sister, although he saw her every day when he looked upon the daughter. Her long hair of chestnut color was partially tied at the base of her neck. Her brown eyes now sparked of zestful ember while eagerly waiting for the chieftess to call the hunt. With an aggravated growl, she leaped from her dwelling to wait within the center of the Lair.
Quelin gave no chase. She was no longer of age to discipline over trivial matters. Instead, he finished with his work, wrapping the final binding to the blades and gave the deadly weapon a final inspection. It was a shorter staff than Blackbird's, with just a single crescent blade on one end. But this blade was made to be jagged, instead of smooth, to pierce even the toughest of hides. A faint smile of satisfaction twitched across his lips, but his approval could be seen more so within his stern blue gaze.
Tamrin continued to storm down the darkened tunnel, and saw the hunters gather in the Lair. She continued to grumble her complaints under her breath until a single sending stopped her in her tracks.
**Patience**
Her breath caught short in her throat and her temper was surprisingly suppressed. There lied a moment of uneasy embarrassment as she turned slowly and looked up toward an obscure dwelling embedded high within the rocky corridor. She gave no sending in return. There was no need to. Stardreamer's simple and pure sending was enough for her to recognize her lapse of respect before she continued on her way, and at a much more slower, controlled pace. She expected Lurker to be the first to greet her. Lurker's eyes lit up at first sight, but Tamrin held up her hand with a knowing grin and answered before the question was even asked. "Yes, Quelin is finished with your blade. He'll bring it in time for the hunt."
Lurker flashed an anxious smile and her slanted eyes watched the corridor for her weapon to be delivered as she tightened her flaming hair within the single bind at the back of her head. She was usually found to be lax and apathetic of everyday life around her, but a hunt always brought Lurker alert and ready to go at any given moment.
"Wait! I'm coming! I'm coming!"
Heads turned to find Scarlett trotting quickly with her quiver of arrows and longbow upon her shoulder. She wore her flaxen hair unbound and it tumbled across her face as she ran. Although she wasn't one for battles and spoils, she was one of the best hunters and the finest archer of the Clan, even though she earned her name by causing an accidental scar or two upon her chieftain's rump one day for mistaking him for a hornless stag.
"We wouldn't dare leave you behind, Scarlett," Zebula grinned at the upcoming huntress. "Wouldn't want one of your arrows to strike one of our own hides for abandoning you."
Scarlett's luminous blue eyes greeted him with her chuckles. "Are you saying I have a temper, my chief?"
Lostshard let out a boisterous laugh in response. "Well, there was that time when Jeppe found that stink-tail and snuck it in your den!" His mirth earned him a swipe across the rear with her bow.
The trio continued the amusing story amongst themselves as Crossblade staggered by yet again with the younglings still in tow. They refused to let go until the very last moment while their endless laughter and chatter filled the Den...as well as his ears. As chief and chieftess, Arfurido and Zebula discussed which prey to likely hunt and which direction to take once on the ground. Quelin finally arrived to give Lurker her beloved weapon and smoothly dodged her attempts at embracing him when another elder came to wish her grown ones a successful hunt.
"Keep to your back. Do not let your mind go astray," Wordgazer reminded them as she did every time they went to hunt since their first.
Zebula raised a brow at his mother and chuckled. "Better to tell that to your daughter."
Arfurido rewarded him with a scowl and a swift jab to his ribs with her elbow. No matter the age, the two would forever taunt each other. Wordgazer could only smile. To her, such teasing only meant their bond was stronger for it. "My words are meant for both of you as well as everyone here. I never cease to worry when any of you go off."
Arfurido grabbed her blade while shaking her head at her mother. "Why you ever worry when we have our Griffs, I'll never understand."
"Don't take their speed for granted, chieftess," Quelin murmured in support of Wordgazer's caution. before turning to leave. "Any predator could strike you down before a Griff reached your side."
Zebula gave one final sending before they departed. The faint reply was groggy in denial. It came to no surpriseto the chief. Stardreamer lived for the night and normally slept the day away, but the chief always made it a point to request his friend's participation, even if it was simply for the sake of humorous company.
"Let's be gone," Arfurido announced a bit impatiently. Much of the daylight had been wasted already. So on foot, the hunt began.((It's not colored yet, but I'll get to that when I have more time ))

| Glad to see this series again. The pic of Crossblade with the little ones remind me of when my brother and I, and our 3 step- brothers and step-sister used to hang off my step-father (their dad). It was a hoot. ___________________________________________________ Reese's, Kashmir's, and Tequila's mommy. | |
