| I would like whatever help you would like to provide on this project!
It's a long story, but a while back I tried to make a unique card game for Elf Quest fans. It rapidly grew to something I was not capable of handling.
After recently getting back into playing Magic the Gathering, and seeing a really neat Set Editor, I figured the quick and easy route is to just make a Magic expansion set based on Elf Quest.
I installed the program today. I have over 160 cards half done already... Whew!
What I need from the community is alternative images (I'm using low-res images from the 'who's who' page on Elfquest.com for now) and character info.
Images for characters and other creatures, artifacts, and that sort of thing need to be 317x231 pixels minimum (half card images) and 317x410 minimum (full card images). Artwork can be fan art or scans, preferably as high of quality for the size that is possible and color.
As far as character info, the main things I need are all of the below stated info for:
-more Trolls (all I have is Picknose, Oddbit, Drub, Flam, Old Maggoty, and Trinket) -all of the preservers except for Petalwing -the Shamans and Bone Woman (names, titles, etc) -More of the 'average folk' for humans and Elves. -Anything you want added. Right now, I'm not discounting anything, even fanfic or RP characters. -Items -Key events in the series (or fanfic if you want)
(I pretty much have all of the characters listed on the 'who's who' list from the website, some with colors, simple names, and blatant abilities (like Flying))
The information I need to have for each card is:
Title: Card type: Color (see below): Main characteristic, if any: Picture
Card types (as far as Magic the Gathering) are: Creature (a character or other living thing on Abode, such as Cutter or Squirrel) Artifact (a 'thing', such as Skywise's Lodestone) Enchantment (something that affects a permanent thing indefinately, such as 'Foaming Sickness') Instant (essentially an event that occurs "now" and at any time, like Skyfire) Sorcery (an action you are doing on your turn. Much like an Instant, but limited as to when it can be played. This would be like "spring the trap")
If you think of something that doesn't fit, just do your best to describe what you think it would do, I'll play with it.
Color: This is sort of tricky to describe. This is the flavor of the character or event, not what is visually associated.
-White (plains): Spiritual, Solid rules, ethics, superstition Example:Hoan G'ta Sho -Blue (water): Change, manipulation, intellegence, information Example: Mother of Memory -Black (swamp): Trechery, death, sacrifice Example: Winnowil -Red (mountains): Fire, Emotion, Impulsiveness, destruction Example: Khavi -Green: Wild, Growth, Nature Example: Most Wolfriders
In essence, I want to discuss the characteristics of characters and events in Elf Quest, as well as give the opportunity for you to add in whatever you want added, if this all makes sense.

| Subject: Current setlist Thu Nov 06, 2014 9:24 pm | |
| This is probably hard to read, but here is the initial set list I have inputted so far. It does not list which cards have images (about 60%, all low res). Hopefully it will spark some ideas...
(also, I cropped out the Lands and blanks that I have on the computer, there are more cards on the list, in other words. This is mostly characters.)
(Everything is negotiable! If you see something wrong or want to discuss something, feel free! All of this is off the top of my head and may need adjusted.)

| Why not grab images from the free digital comics on EQ.com? Meaning- from what Wendy and Richard have already scanned and/or uploaded to their website? | |

| Magic is a funny animal. It is supposed to replicate an RPG in cards. Highly addicting if you get into it.
The basic premise is that you, the player are a wizard known as a Planeswalker that can travel from world to world, time to time, and dimension to dimension. As such, anything in those places and times could be an ally to you or your opponent.
The adaption to Elfquest is from the view that we, as planeswalkers, have visited Abode throughout their timeline, and as such we can draft the creatures, characters, and other things that have been seen in that world and "duke it out" with another player using those things as resources.
Essentially, after the set(s) are complete, a player would choose cards from the set (usually purchaced, but in this case we will probably play online) and assemble a deck based on a chosen stratigy.
Generally a game consists of 2+ players, each with a deck (called the library) of cards. The cards represent spells and "lands". Lands are special but common cards that generate energy to cast the spells. The number and color of lands in play dictate what spells you can 'cast' during your turn.
These spells 'summon' creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and other things encountered in your travels among planes, as the story goes. As such, you could play a game with just Elfquest characters, or combine them with creatures from other worlds.
These creatures, characters, and the like are your army. You start out with 20 life points, draw cards, place land, and use it to bring spells into play. A spell might bring Cutter into play for you to attack the other player's lifepoints, or it might cause them damage directly. Another might destroy a Land, or creature, or cause a creature to gain or lose an advantage.
The current way the producer of Magic generates cards is that all themes and "beginner" content is a available at the "common" rarity. This means thst if you buy a starter package of cards at the store, it is mostly made up of cards that arent too difficult to understand. Simple creatures with few abilities. Packages of cards that have a higher quantity of rarer cards are intended for more advanced players as rarer cards are more complex.
For now, Im mostly focusing on 'commons', such as Cutter before he was a leader, and then once we ha e it all worked out we can duplicate characters to make the more complex cards (you could have Cutter the Hunter and Cutter Kinseeker in play at the same time, as they are from two different time periods, technically).
The above list is hard to read. I didnt have time to break down the list into names only. If I figure out a way to do it, Ill update the list to make it easier to read.
There are a lot of Magic the Gathering (MTG) rules and other references online, both at the publisher's website (of note, look up "making magic" at Wizards) and on places like Wikipedia.
I am trying to come up with a special card type of "Quest" so that our version is not just fighting. This would be a special card that would award points or some other benefit for players to work towards instead of fighting. These would be representitive of the various major and minor quests in the Elf Quest series.
Hope I answered some questions, feel free to ask more.
If you are curious about Magic, find a local comic/collectible/card shop and see if they have "Friday Night Magic" meetings or tournaments. It should be free to watch and ask questions. If you feel like getting into it, there are "starter packs" and "preconstructed decks", the latter being playable as-is (preconstructed decks cost about $15 but there are duel decks that can cost less per deck.) You will need a deck for yourself and an opponent with a deck to play. Decks usually come with instructions. I would say to stay away from booster packs until you are ready to modify your decks and get a handle on gameplay (but some are included in some decks).
Most of this is not a concern, as Im just trying to input card data and work out "balance" between the cards. Once I get them inputted I can playtest them with my friends and see if there are some bad cards and then release the card image to the group (or even import them into online software so we can play world wide). ___________________________________________________

| I do apologize, Im a bit excited about this and kind of dumped all the stuff I've learned over the last month or so into the post.
Im hoping that Ill be able to post some examples by the end of next week. Im up to about 260 cards inputted so far, which definately meets the "set" criteria, however by far they are mostly creature cards, and of those the Wolfriders outnumber the rest by a substantial degree (about 65 wolfriders).
I may still have a more complete list from Embala somewhere, but Im doing pretty good. I have plenty of Wavedancers and Sun Villagers, but Im missing the gliders outside of:
Lord Voll Winnie Kureel Aroree Egg Door Door Brace
I dont have the names for the rest of the chose 8 yet.
The only Trolls I have are the Kings, Oddbit, Old Maggoty, Trinket, Flam, Drub, Smelt, and two others Embala mentioned that I cant remember at the moment. Considering how much content Im finding for the Trolls Im suprised there arent more of them.
I have Tier, Timmain, and half a dozen or so High-Ones
I have a dozen wolves
I have no birds
I think I have all the preservers
If the Gobacks name their deer/elk things, I have no names for them
I have Bearclaw's amulet, Skywise's Lodestone, a few Two Edge artifacts, the big lodestone, and New Moon. I have a few experimental Great Eggs and Palaces, but they have quite a few kinks to work out.
I have card blanks for Lands set up, including Snow lands fkr the Gobacks.
I havea few placeholder images for some characters, but no final graphics.
Also, later on when people feel inspired and have time, the card border might need EQ'ed up a little. Embala did some fine work a few years ago from scratch, and I hope some of it can be reused.
Anyway, at this point I have no clue what to expect for pacing of when things might get done. Im not expecting graphics until sometime next year as that is quite time consuming and needs references for anyone to know what is needed. Right now Im just trying to get the parameters sketched out and data entered, then make an attempt at balance, and playtest the cards to see if there is anything glaringly wrong. Still lots to do, and still need to check out the online game programs. The Official Magic Online program may be a pay to play thing and that just wont do, especially since these cards may not be acceptiable there. LackeyCCG has potential but has to be tweaked from scratch. I have a hunch there is another one out there for MTG, but I havent found it yet.
As soon as I can put.together a proper list Ill post it, but I really need to post examples of my more complete cards so you can see what it could look like and see if it sparks some ideas.

| Oh, and just a FYI, if I do get a list posted you should be forewarned: the power and toughness of the creatures are supposed.to be balanced with the rest of Magic sets and be roughly equivlant. As such, bare in mind the following:
There are wolves and bears standard in the normal game. These creatures are 2/2 (power/toughness). There are wolves and bears in Elfquest, so Im using this as a starting point.
Wolfriders are roughly considered equals to their bondbeasts. I dont know who would win in a fight between rider and mount, but I have set an upper limit average to wolfriders as 2/2 green creatures.
Sun villagers are hardy, but pretty weak when it comes to offense, sk I put them in at 1/2 on average. Obviously, there are some stronger and some weaker, but as a base, this is where Im starting
(Oh, and all this can be changed, please do discuss if you wish)
Gobacks are essentiallh Wolfriders, and have been fighting the Trolls in the ice and snow for centuries. They seem a good match for the Wolfriders, so I have penciled them in as 2/2 white or green creatures.
Wavedancers... for some reason they seem weak to me. I penciled them in at 1/1 to start, and when I know.more about them I can add.
Forest trolls are penciled in at 2/2, though they might go up a bit on toughness. Not sure.
Frozen trolls have not been inputted, but if I get some names, they will have one or the other stat better than Forest Trolls (after all they defeated them).
I dont know where to put humans. Many humans in Magic are between 1/1 and 2/2. I did put Oblar the Mountain Tall as a 3/3.
As I see it, power and toughness isnt the organism's physical ability to fight and defend themselves, as in what their body can take and dish out, but rather a consideration of the tools at hand and mental facility as well. As sucb, Cutter might have much higher stats than his kin, even though pbysically he isnt much stronger. He did beat Strongbow at a challenge of Wills, so he is better.
Well, thats all for now and much more than I had planned to add. Gut Nacht!

As for the Magik series, I think my oldest knows about that one.... That would be awesome! When I started trying to figure out a game years ago, the goal was to have as much fan content as possible. If you see something that fits or that you want to do, feel free to crewte whatever you want. It would be neat if we come up with an EQ set card template at some point. And after we get a few cards floating around for discussion, your eldest might provide some insight into balance and what works and what doesnt. Thanks for the intrest, if you see something that needs done, do what you want with it, and if I find anything specific, Ill post up. So... Im horrible at planning and keeping my posts short. I have about 80-90 cards ready to post up for nit-picking and better images, but 80-90 cards is too much of a beast for anyone to sort through. How should I post them up? Im trying to be respectful of the site too. If I started a thread for each card, that would be messy too. Currently I have 8-9 folders with 11 card images in each one. The card images are about 50k or less.

| Woohoo!!!! I finally got some images up! and they are sorta-kinda 'correct', as in I fixed a lot of typos and reformatted the keywords to make more sense, but everything is up for debate, so please give some input when and where you see fit. The folder can be found at https://s1007.photobucket.com/user/Two-Edge-Hammer/library/EQMTG NOTE: DO NOT USE, CHECK THE NEXT POST FOR LINKS!The password is eqcards It's a bit overwhelming, I'm sure, and it's not as broken down as I'd like it to be, but it's taken me a week just to get to this point. I'll tidy it up later. My suggestion: pick a folder or card when you have a moment and nitpick it. Feel free to ask questions. There are some things that won't immediately make sense, such as why some things are a certain color. There's some info on color above, but the rundown is: White: Spirituality, law, order, superstition, air Blue: Change, intelligence, water, manipulation Black: Self sacrifice, selfishness, death, undead Red: Passion, Emotion, Fire, Damage Green: Wild, Flesh, Life, Growth Outside of that, Magic is a game where almost any scenario can be set up one way or another, so the trick is to create card text that is flexible but explicit, in that its very useful, but can't be abused to overpower the game and break it. If you see a card that you'd like expressed in a certain way, or a part of the story you want to develop, post up which card and what you think, and we will work out how it would work in the game text. Keep in mind, though, while certain events can be described in the game, trying to mimic the explicit storyline would be difficult and boring. The idea is to set up small pieces of a roll play, such as: Creatures: the things doing things in the game, your pawns. Instances (instants): events that could happen at any time, without much planning or thought. Planned events (sorceries): Events and occurances that, in the RP world or the storyline, take time to plan out, but would need to happen at a particular time. Artifacts: Things or items that hold a special place in the world, changing how the world works, such as Skywise's Lodestone. Resources (lands): To be able to do things, you have to have resources. This might be akin to money, energy, raw materials, etc. For the most part, this is broken up into the 5 basic Lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests), and branch out from there. Enchantments: In the game, this is something that modifies game-play for certain things. In the world of Abode, this could be the Aura of the Little Palace (but the Little Palace would be an Artifact), a pool of bad magic, the feeling of 'home' the Wolfriders get with the Father Tree and more. It could be a curse (Winnie, while she possessed Rayak, would be like a curse enchantment), and so on. Well, before I get any more long winded, I'll stop for now, except for a suggestion-- - Kindredsoul wrote:

Look around through the folders above and see if anything sparks your interest. One specific area that will be difficult (or, impossible, I should say) to find images for all of them are the Coils. I got a little creative with the concept of bad magic, and extended the two examples in the story to other types. As such, other than the two from the story, art will need to be generated for those other Coils. To all, if you figure out some images for a card, post or PM me with a link to the art (or an email I can reach you at), and reference the card. If you think of an idea for a specific card, post up what it would look like and I'll generate it. If you are interested in the program I'm using for this, or the working file, let me know. I'm using a free program called Magic Set Editor, or MSE. It makes generating the cards mindlessly easy, so you can spend more time working on the mechanics than piecing together artwork, borders, fonts, text, icons, and the dizzying array of things that repetitively go into each card. Thanks to Embala for the reference material for the Lands. While nowhere near final, (and I still need to give her the feedback), several of the images fit so well it gives me good feelings to see them. The rest of the images are low-res art taken from the old Who's Who references on ElfQuest.com, and as always, are of course WaRP Graphics's domain. At the bottom of the cards there is a 'VOID' where the artist name would go, this isn't to slight the artists, this is generic across the board for the cards while they are still getting worked on so that no one can use a card in a future game if any leak out. In the above link, there are several folders, including templates and cards with and without images. There's a short description for each folder on Photobucket. Let me know if anything is confusing or doesn't work right.

He is shaping up pretty good. Im sort of wondering if the King version is too cheap, but at the same time its a "rare" and a low cost for what it does is typical for a rare. Cost being the mana symbols at te top corner. It is thr mana symbols that give a creature its color of personality. Ability color can be different from personality. Ahdri is an example of this: a Sun Villager (white) with rock shaping (red). I think I added blue to her since she has a bit more to her than just a sun villager or just a rock shaper, she studied hard and can shape metals, so she has some blue IIRC. Of course, if I have the wrong character, please correct me, or if you think it should be different, say so.

| *hoping I didn't run everyone off!*
It just occurred to me that we will probably need to make fan drawings of each character. It seems that we had a discussion a couple of years ago and the question was raised as to if Pini images could be used and the fear was that, due to them not being located on Elfquest servers, they might not be usable.
That said, I haven't asked them yet until all the mechanics are worked out. If it's a good, viable thing, with a good amount of reference material to see what it might look like, it might be blessed off on. I'd prefer fan art if it's a pure fan project, but to me it seems that 400+ images might be a bit much for the fan community to bite off.
I have, though, gone through the updated 'who's who' and found some more names and better images (for reference, higher res to show what they might look like). I'm taking some time off next week, and I'll see what I end up working on. I used to do some drawing myself, and I posted on Elfquest.com to see if there is any interest in the card game, but any help would be appreciated.
I believe I have just about every name loaded into the card set except some obscure ones I found today. I also don't have enough Trolls. It seems that there should be the two others in the story about Smelt getting sent out to find Rockshapers (the two that volunteered him, IIRC), and it seems as though we should have a few more from the war between Guttlekraw and the Wolfriders. Seems like we should have more from Picknose's clan too, but I just have the two.
I guess I could just make some up.... Or ask Trollbabe.
Wavedancers and humans would also be good to have more of. I have enough for a basic set, but the Elves FAR FAR outpace the rest.

| LOL no you didn't scare everyone off hun As for myself, I'm just swamped with multiple jobs right now until after the holidays are over. But yes, I'd love to offer drawings if you like. I did have one question tho! Since Elfquest takes place over a span of decades and decades, were you thinking on doing stages of cards/stats on single characters? Like Cutter for instance. When he's first chief, he's young and somewhat experienced... Then you have the "now" Cutter who's by far more experienced and skilled. The same would be for so many of the others. So would there be multiple cards on characters with decades of history and progression? ((if you discussed this in one of your posts, I simply missed it)) | |

So would there be multiple cards on characters with decades of history and progression? In a word, yes. The full game that this is a variant of includes many versions, references and types of the same individuals from different realities, timelines, and ages, and as much as a character develops in ElfQuest, there is no way to get 'everything' on to one card. Besides, in any one character you might have a huge variety of characteristics over a span of a short while (such as Cutter, right before he was captured by the Trolls, while he was enslaved by them, right after he was released, when he recognized Skywise, and so on, and this happened over the course of a very short period of time in his life. Each 'version' of him had different tools and a different outlook on how to solve a problem. That said, with a few exceptions, I'm not going all out to cover every conceivable variant of every character right away. After a week's worth of data entry, it seems that thecharacter set is too large as is, and would take to long to put together as one set, so I'm trying to decide how to break it up. The cards would be able to work together, of course, but 'divide and conquer' seems like a good way to get this rapidly expanding project from getting out of hand. As it is, I have over 460 cards and card constructs generated, and almost half of them have placeholder images, but 90% of them are character cards. The game needs more of the other types of cards, or else you will have 20 cards that are different wolfriders, but their stats would be identical (all 2/2 Wolfriders with Wolf-Thought costing 1G to cast, which in the grand scheme of the game, is a rather dull, plain, and ordinary creature to have 20 variants of.) So, I'm trying to figure out how to break it up so that we have a fair representation of Elves, Wolfriders, Trolls, Go-backs, Humans, and the like, have as little work into it as possible (100 well picked cards with unique images takes less time than 200 bloated cards all needing unique images). Great questions, keep them coming. I will try to give a rundown of how to play the game later after I get some sleep. The basics are: -Acquire cards (whatever medium they are in) -Plan and build a deck from the cards you have that is playable -find another player with a deck. -play the game. Playing the game consists of -shuffling, deciding who goes first. -Initial draw -Game begins, draw one card -play a Land, if you have any. -Play a Creature, Sorcery, or other spell as you have lands to pay for it. -Attack with creatures if you are able -End your turn The other player does the same, then picks up at 'draw one card' for the next turn.

| Just an update.
The good news: I have nearly 500 cards roughed out with card types, some details, and rough color. Around 1/4 of them have test images (well, someof these are duplicates with new images). There is more than enough in quantity for a full set and one or two expansions.
The bad news: Between 1/4 and 1/2 of these cards are Wolfrider creatures, 80% of which are plain 2/2 wolfriders with nothing special. Images will be needed for most of the cards. Also, we have an overabundance of creatures and need many more "other things". Embala has had skme great ideas that adapt well, but we need more if we want it to be "flavorful".
Another thing I have bothering me is do we make it Magic standard, or do we make a custom back and keep it seperate? Once the "extra" stuff is added, Im sure it will be a card pool of around 700-900 cards, which is plenty for a few years of fun by itself, but as a standard expansion to be played with the main Magic set, it would add both variety and players.
The upside to making it seperate is that it would loosen the character statistics, so you would have a better range between characters. If this is done, though, it cannot be added to standard Magic later on.
Anyway, thats whats up. Ill be uploading a fresh set of images to photobucket sometime this week as soon as I output them and shrink them by half for bandwidth.

What do I need... A kick in the head or something, I'm sure! You don't need to worry about anything right now, Embala, I don't want to take away from your projects, especially since I'm confusing thing, perhaps? When I get the updated set uploaded to Photobucket, what I will need from others is a) proofreading (things that don't make sense, or go against Elf Quest) b) any images people want to submit, drawn, scanned, or whatever inspires you. c) discussion and nitpicking about how each character fits in. Personality color, ability color, and the like. This won't really make sense until after there is some discussion on the game, but it might anyway. d) more ideas for events and other stuff (like Embala has already submitted over on EQ.com) The current photobucket images are still valid and can be discussed or be used for inspiration. If anyone can help me understand how to explain myself better , I'd appreciate it! There are no silly questions!!! I'll try to repost the images I tried to post a moment ago.... | Just curious, looking at the color wheel, what color(s) best fit you (anyone reading this that might want a custom card for Christmas)?
Im a Blue, in that I seek out information and like to think things through, but Im not sure if Im also Red or if Im Green: I like nature, but I am usually likely to strongly defend friends and family, which is a Red trait.

https://s1007.photobucket.com/user/Two-Edge-Hammer/library/EQMTG
(Sorry if that doesnt come out, Im on my phone and the url thing doesnt work right. Also, sorry for all the ads on photobucket, I didnt realize it had gotten so bad. It crashed my laptop just trying to get the link to share!)
Just in case that doesnt post, heres the plain text. https://s1007.photobucket.com/user/Two-Edge-Hammer/library/EQMTG
Not shown in the list above are the Quest cards. Magic has a thing called "Saga" cards that are actually a part of the game as it looks to me. Im just learning about it. A modification of which would work in an elfquest variant so its not all fighting. These cards are bits of story that have goals, and an alternate way to win the game is to complete each goal. In EQ, it would be called Quests. The way it was laid out in the explaination was that you would have 10 cards and the game starts with the top one turned over. I dont know if there are only 10 cards in the main game, but as I see it we would need 10+ for each tribe. If anyone wants to help select events from the story, let me know so we can work together.
