| The quote was Cutter's. Those specific words were Cutter's. The idea that elfin lives (not just their spirits, but their individual, breathing, heart-beating physical selves) have value and should be preserved when possible, is not Cutter's alone. Why bother saving Ember when Angrif had her captive then? Just let him kill her, and then Teir will probably die from Recognition-shock, then they'll both be in the Palace as spirits! That's just as good, right? Yeah, no, that's not the way the elves consider the lives of those near and dear to them. Just the lives of those they've never met. | |

| sun girl I completely agree! There's a physical side to relationships. When somebody dies, there are a thousand little things that you miss, that will never ever come back to you, and even if you can still speak to the dead, as the Elfquest elves can, they have still passed into another world and are no longer a part of yours, in the way you were used to. ___________________________________________________ | |

| One of my least favorite parts was when Sunstream (I think) was saying that in responding to the call, an elf died on the way to the palace and its spirit was there, and Reef was all, 'Then she/he made it!' It kind of got on my nerves. ___________________________________________________ Thank you for the beautiful banner, Embala | |

And I think Sefra's right. Even his perspective on life and death has changed since he made that pronouncement. That was before he knew about his own mortality, much less that spirits could live on after death. If one of my elves were in danger and asked them for help and got a 'Oh don't worry, just die and your soul will come here! =D '-sending, they'd get themselves out of trouble, and then throttle whoever sent that. I can't help but think that's what that kind of thinking is going to lead to. - Lunakat wrote:
I think it was a way for Wendy to not have to draw new elves and introduce a bunch of new characters. Still-- why send out "the call" and wait ten years? Why not have the party happen sooner? The Go Backs could have made it within a year-- and maybe one or two new people could have shown up with others being on the way... and then that shindig of chiefs could have happened without it being strange that only three or four elves (two in wrap stuff and one dead) rsvped within a ten year span. I think you're completely correct about the whole 'not having to draw new characters'- thing. I haven't entirely read up on the whole 'the call'-plot, mainly because I don't have all the issues, but I'd assume 'what's ten years to immortals' works for the Sun Folk/Go-Backs/everybody else and 'the Now' stops the wolfriders from realizing it's been ten years. ___________________________________________________ 'We're all broken, in different ways, in varying degrees.'

I'm not a big fan of Reef myself, he seems so traumatized and sweet and it would be interesting but he just seems a bit bland to me. ___________________________________________________ Thank you for the beautiful banner, Embala

| I thought the thing with the call was a bit dumb since there's been virtually no pay off , really. As I said before, Cutter went out on his own and without any 'magic training and experience' and looked for other tribes and found (and was found) by numerous ones. What's the point of Sunstream 'training' all his life to send out a call that only a small handful of new elves responded to? It just seems kind of dumb. Maybe Sunstream's 'gift' is just not that well-defined... if he would actually talk about the elves that maybe weren't coming or responding to the call for whatever reason, it would be kind of interesting. I mean drawing tree elves and then showing Door (wasn't it Door?) and whoever else, and then dropping it seems odd. Maybe Wendy really doesn't want to draw new elves at all. Oh screw it, kill that one off, put the others in wrapstuff. It's kind of funny. ___________________________________________________ Thank you for the beautiful banner, Embala | |

I thought it was Door too. I can't help but think Wendy is just going to say 'screw it, they're all going to die' and then let some drooling bear of a human into the palace so he can kill whoever he can.

Throttled by a jester's cap ... XD Hehehehe holy hell Beoynd would be incensed. And likely greet the person with a kick to the face. (Because long legs) Beyond:Here I am, actually in over my head, asking for help, and all I get is a cheery 'just die'?! Sender: Ok, that might have come off wrong... Beyond: YOU DON'T SAY Uli, drunk or not, would break the person's jaw and tell them to stop whining over it, and just set it correctly so it heals naturally. Drunk Uli would backhand any healer who tries to heal the sender's jaw. Zharo is quiet, kicks most of the people out and straight up steals the Palace. ___________________________________________________ 'We're all broken, in different ways, in varying degrees.'

| I really dislike Savah.
Yes, I know. This is sacrilege. But puh-lease. Mrs. Great Magic Teacher. Hunh. She couldn't even teach her own tribe Sending.
She had Rayek under her wing for some 600 years, and when he met the Wolfriders, what was he capable of? Lifting oranges! Yay! (I don't believe the hypnotizing power was ever trained properly, it's just a gadget he uses on a rare occasion) It was not until he met Ekuar that he learned to lift big rocks and eventually himself after only a few months of training.
Ahdri was around her for millennia, did Savah detect any latent rockshaping powers? No! While the Wolfriders knew all along that Redlance would one day be a treeshaper (even with Bearclaw telling Redmark off for not being a proper treeshaper yet! Excuse me, Chief? Aren't you a treeshaper's grandson as well? Where is YOUR treeshaping magic?)
And now this repeated thing of Sunstream still needing Savah's guidance and teachings, as if he isn't decades-old already and powers fully developed, mostly while being wrapped in cotton candy. Every time she comes forward to offer wisdom, I go, "Gods, her again. Go sit in your chair, woman."
Other than her, I don't like Skywise as a character type, a player and a charmer. I just don't like that kind of man. He's the Captain Kirk of Elfquest, and I could never stand Kirk either.

| But so true! I always thought Savah was a pretty ineffective teacher - and terribly dull at that - but when you look at all the evidence Aelia compiled... DAMN, she's not ineffective, she's downright incompetent! | |

| Aelia, your post made me laugh so hard. I've always liked Savah but she has always seemed a bit silly to me. Like she existed purely for plot device/movement - tall, wise elf, gentle guide, etc.. She's very archetypal in her energy, but it's true...she is useless in a way. Her title is Mother of Memory, and I think that's kind of her primary role. But you just burned her so hard, so it's kind of hilarious. I still prefer her way more than Timmain though....Zzzzzzz.
Also, I always considered Skywise the typical sidekick character. Never saw him as a Captain Kirk type as much as like, say, Larry from Three's Company. Anyone remember that dumb 80's show? Skywise has sidekick syndrome. The trusty, comeback-for-anything ladies man sidekick. It's very formulaic. Eyerollingly (I know that's not a word) so.
EDIT: Wingthing - the things you did with Savah in your stories were absofuckinglutely amazing. They seemed so perfect for her character somehow. ___________________________________________________ Thank you for the beautiful banner, Embala

| Skywise is totes sidekick. The reason the sidekick is a "ladies man" and never commits is that he is already committed to the main character. No woman in his life can be more important than his buddy. He has to be ready to pick up and leave at a moment's notice-- anytime his hero calls. That's why it's a formula. If he had to check with his wife and call a baby-sitter, he wouldn't be able to jump on command, like the super-loyal, always available amigo he is. He'd, y'know, have his own life and stuff...
Bros before... romance.
Besides, look what happened with Aroree. (That's what you get for breaking the code, man!) Sometimes I think that Aroree was Skywise's punishment for trying to choose a woman over Cutter.

| Tbh, I think it's kind of interesting that everyone thinks so much of Savah, given the fact that she literally kind of fell into the job by being the sole survivor of the founding villagers(much like Timmain and the High Ones). | |
