| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest #14 Wed Mar 23, 2016 12:10 pm | I guess Filcher was, literally, an old friend. Doh! In all fairness, I found his death extremely touching. He died as he lived, with his face buried in Cutter's old socks. <sniff> Got to say, this is probably my favorite issue of FQ so far! I think the line art is 80%+ very good, and like Lunakat said, the annoying coloring wasn't quite so obvious (although there was one panel of sadface Strongbow where he had the same complexion as a body on a slab. Awful, putty gray. And Venka's new outfit is garish and terrible. Speaking of costume changes, I guess when an elf reaches the palace they automatically get a generic silk gown in "their" color. Ahdri and Moonshade are essentially wearing the same dress. This makes it feel even more cultlike ("Accept these robes, initiate...") I also had a hard eyeroll when Moonshade started preaching to the Go-backs ("There are no limits. Here, drink this.") I really liked the sequence where Leetah almost fell into the sinkhole. She's always been a bit feline to Cutter's canine, and in the panel where Dr Dre holds her up, she looks like a cat being held by its scruff. Made me chuckle! I think Wendy's in top form with her drawing throughout the Cutter sequences. You can really feel how he's drifting mentally and emotionally. All these disturbing, surreal images jumbled up--Filcher's skeleton and Joyleaf's skull--that's dark! We all deserve a gold-star for guessing the direction they're going with the fungus elves. It is very original. As far as I can figure, they feed on decomposing flesh that lands in their dell, and they're just waiting for Cutter to expire so they can consume him. The "linked" sending circles strongly suggest a communal mind. I could pick out 2 females and 4 males. The most prominent female still looks pregnant to me, but I think that's just a "bole" on her abdomen. I wouldn't be surprised if these elves are extremely ancient, perhaps even High Ones. It would make sense for High Ones or 1st generation elves to revile the elvish form that got most of their friends killed. I love both the concept and the execution of this new tribe. I had to laugh when Aroree showed up in the Holt. Girl gets around! I almost think she (and Treestump and Clearbrook) where there so that it looked like Ember had more elves to manage. Otherwise, she ditched her tribe to hang out with Yun, Pike, Newstar, and Ohler. I do think it's sweet that Ohler is 100% on-board with Newstar's mortality. Their relationship is just a bit of background color, but it's quite nice to see. Newstar's wolfrider duds are very her. While the art was great, I really didn't care for the rhyming poetry in the text. The meter wasn't too great, and...rhyming doesn't seem very "delirious" to me. It takes a little too much mental coordination. The only part of the story that really didn't work for me was Venka's confrontation with Two-Edge. I do agree that she needed to confront him in some way about his decision to give the humans firearms, however I don't understand the point of the conversation we saw. She basically just railed at him while he had an emotional breakdown in front of her. There was nothing constructive in the exchange, and she came off as a bit cruel. I realize she had a traumatic experience, but it still feels out-of-character. Venka is cool, calm, and collected. I feel like she would show him the ramifications of his actions in a gentle, yet unflinching manner. There was also a lot of plot exposition packed into her rant about Rayek and Winnowill, blah, blah, blah. I'm am so bored of Winnowill. I wish they're tie her to a piece of the palace and launch her into the void of space, never to be seen again. She is a terrible antagonist, and the humans are even worse than she is. The prospect of having her and Rayek and the humans taking up more space in a future issue is very discouraging. Finally, I have to register my strong dislike for the cover of #15. Moonshade looks horrible. Why is her hair so long? It looks like a complete nightmare to deal with. Is she levitating her gown to cover her bits? What's wrong with Strongbow's hand? Also, if she completely shape-changes into High One form, she's really giving the lie to the still-the-same-Moonshade talk in #13. She's really changed everything about herself, inside and out, which is absolutely her prerogative, but it's no wonder Strongbow's distraught. | Topic: Final Quest #14 | Twopaw

| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest #14 Wed Feb 03, 2016 8:39 pm | Good eve, Cousins, Cubs and Elders! Just read Final Quest #13 this afternoon, and I thought there was a brief mention that after Cutter's 'opening door' with Timmain, that he was heading semi-blindly through the wood to the original location of Father Tree Holt. And unless I'm misunderstanding what happened to it in the early days of EQ (the Gotara worshippers burning the elves out of it and destroying the original Holt in the process) the Tree itself was incinerated or damaged beyond repair by said burning. Could the 'tree elves' pictured in the #14's cover be some sort of semi-physical representation of Elf-spirits/life forces using plant life, or the remains of Father Tree in some way, to take physical form when Cutter arrives in the 'old holt's location? -2Paw. | Topic: How do you feel? | Elwing

| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest # 13 Tue Jan 26, 2016 5:37 pm | I enjoyed the art in this more than the previous issue. As Miss Gillespie and Zadzi said, the Cutter pages are great! I love the sketchy, raw style, the monochrome. It really reflects Cutter's state of mind and showcases Wendy's drawing (maybe it's no coincidence that the best pages in the issue, IMO, had the least for Sonny to color!) I think it's sweet that Filcher followed Cutter. I hope they both survive their encounter with the strange wolfpack. It's unfortunate that Filcher is colored such a pale dun color--he looks like a white wolf on my monitor, and I'm surprised Cutter didn't completely flip out when he sprang out of the undergrowth. The Rayek/Winnowill situation seemed to resolve very quickly. It's a little interesting that Winnowill was wrongfooted by gratitude, although I wish it came as a surprise to the reader as well as to her. Since Windkin already expressed this sentiment in the last issue, it seemed a little repetitive. All it would take is to cut the panels from the last issue, and have Windkin to send his thanks to her in #13, with maybe a little text box saying, "In sending, there is only truth. Winnowill has inspired many emotions on her victims but never-- gratitude." As it is, Windkin's words aren't very artfully put. I think all elves do "blame her for her wrath." He just happens to have some positive feelings towards her as well. I can get behind Reef's hulk form, except for his lips. They look like a fishy fu manchu. I like the panel where he transforms back into his elf-self to hug Korafay. I also like the image of Korafay on the rocks (although the brown color chosen for the rocks put me in mind of the no-hump poo on the previous page...) It looks like Sunstream's been drinking the condescension Kool-Aid Timmain has been serving up in the palace. First they want all the elves to respond the the damn call, but now his own daughter hasn't experienced enough pain to be allowed to join him. What the $#@&? Do they want elves to come to the palace or not? As for the human-related plot....sigh. So it took them ten years to build this fleet, they sailed all the way out to the the Wavedancer's grotto, they sidetracked for a little ultraviolence, then...time to sail away! What the heck?!? Sure, they lost one ship, but they've still got the rest of the fleet. They already know the location of two elf tribes. Why not follow through and actually attack one of them? They haven't been able to conquer the "unscalable peaks" in ten years? Totally understandable, humans are notoriously awful climbers [snark]. Built a massive, expensive fleet to fulfill their dying dictator's wish? Let's just give up on that plan and randomly pick a new one. It's nonsensical to the point of absurdity. They didn't manage to kill a single elf in the course of this entire seafaring boondoggle. These humans are dumb. Too dumb to pose any credible threat to anyone (except perhaps the doctor who couldn't keep his trap shut about his elf-friends. Sheesh.) Something that has been bothering me art-wise in FQ...the panels are sometimes very cluttered with a lot of extraneous characters. The problem is most obvious in the crowd scenes, which never look very good to me, but in this issue there are many panels where peripheral characters appear in the background. They just don't need to be there, and they're not doing anything funny or interesting. Even if Wendy is just cut-and-pasting them in, that's still extra work for her--work I don't think she needs to be doing. For example, on pg 18, in the panel where Ahdri offers to lead Cutter's "heart circle" to the proper tunnel, there's no reason for stick-figure Leetah or stock-art Treestump/Clearbrook to be included in the background. Personally, I think the panel would be better if it were a more dynamic composition with just Ahdri. With the time she saved, Wendy could have done an original drawing of her. Otherwise, I do appreciate some classic troll humor in with Picky et al. in the caves. Of course Trinket wants a pony! Side note, it's odd that Ember is staying in the Father Tree Holt. It's not the first time the "original" Wolfriders have been without Cutter. Normally, either Treestump or Strongbow fill in as temporary chief. Now, Strongbow probably isn't in the right headspace, but is it really so pressing for Treestump and Clearbrook to get back to the troll caves? And let's think about who Ember's leading: Pike, Yun, Strongbow (who probably won't even leave his den for the next month,) Newstar, and....that's it I think. Do these 4 elves really need her around? Ember should have gone with the search party or gone back to her own tribe. | Topic: Final Quest #14 | Wisp

| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest #14 Thu Dec 17, 2015 1:23 pm | I guess I'm in a good mood today, but I quite like this cover! Sure, I'm not a huge fan of the boob squiggles, mostly because I'm not sure what they represent anatomically. Are they supposed to indicate texture? Lichen? Mostly, they just remind me that I'm looking at a drawing. Sprawled, exhausted Cutter looks great, even if his foreshortened hand is just a little too big. I certainly prefer this cover to #13. Either the tree elves are active shapeshifters or their design has changed a bit since their original appearance. I think they definitely looked more "tree-like" in our first look at them. The female was a different color and her hand was more defined and "twiggy." But this "lichen" approach is refreshingly novel! Tree elves are such a tired trope, and this certainly puts a new spin on it. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I've been excited by the design of the "tree elves" from our first glimpse of them when Sunstream sent out his call. They are absolutely bizarre-looking, a real departure from the "pretty" elves we know and love. I think Wendy may have wanted to explore in this design direction with the Wavedancers. Sunstream's underwater form is extremely weird and IMO unattractive, for example. But her hands were somewhat tied by what came before, and the existing Wavedancers always struck me as low-rent versions of the Black Mermaid designs (no offense to the Wavedancer lovers out there). As for Wendy taking umbrage with terminology and speculation--what else is new? No one is supposed to talk about anything but what a talented genius she is. I was very interested to read on the facebook page that the hosts of the Elfquest Show podcast submit their episodes to Wendy and Richard for pre-approval prior to release. The host explained that this was so that they could veto inclusion of any conversations that might have inadvertently included spoilers. I was really shocked to hear this! I listen to the podcast when new episodes come out, but I've been a bit surprised that they haven't bothered to seek out any fans who are less than 100% impressed by FQ. I participate in several online fandoms, including many podcasts, and on-going debate about the quality of the property is a mainstay of discussion in every fandom except EQ. Now, I have my answer. How could they invite critical guests to participate if they know they have to submit the episode to WaRP for approval? | Topic: Final Quest #12 | Embala

| Search in: ElfQuest Comic Discusions Subject: Final Quest #12 Tue Nov 17, 2015 4:05 pm | *chuckles* I don't think that was Red's point. ^^ I've wondered the same ... If the soul sharing of Cutter and Timmain is the BIG gamechanging revelation, why is it given away in the preview? My immediate thought was: What comes after this? Is a more important part of the story still hidden in issue #12? And ... what could it be ...? I see two possibilities: 1. What happens with Cutter after those new insights? He freaks out - so much we know. But WHY exactly? Is there more than the soul sharing that disturbes him? And when I've understood the teaser of issue #13 right then Cutter will disappear. Why? Where? What possible evil happens to him after Timtam? 2. What about the Wavedancers? Will the Armada attack with brutal force like cannons and haropoons? Water bombs? Or a biological weapon like it was used in the old storyline with Ardan Djarum? Are the Wavedancersw prepared at all? How well? Issue #13 preview already told that the Armada attacks peaceful villagers. Because the Wavedancers try to find rescue on the shore? Or do they hide well and the anger hits the villagers? | Topic: Splitting topics | Embala

I think that would be the intention (moving forward, or even, if the YES vote wins, with Issue #12 and #13 which both have threads already, though the issues are not out). My thought process was - when the new issue comes out, people are (ideally) going to be excited to talk about it. But for those (like myself) who have avoided the threads before the issue comes out - diving in on Page 8, for example, feels like a bit much, and I'd be less inclined (though lets be honest, when am I ever quiet?) to probably post my thoughts, because there's an overflowing threads of discussion(s) happening in there. So it'd be nice (again, speaking for myself when I spewed the idea), to have a "fresh" thread to start with and go forward. | Topic: /Apology/Solution | Tymber

1: When we are speculating purely based the cover.
2: When we are speculating/discussing based on the preview, which someone is always nice enough to post in the thread.
3: When we are discussing the issue in question. If someone hasn't bought the newest issue they've simply got to not enter the thread. But the problem with that is step 3. No one has issue #12 yet (or #13, apparently) - so if someone hasn't bought the newest issue, they simply do not enter that thread idea - how is the thread for issue #12 8 pages then? Original QuestSiege at Blue MontainKing of te Broken WheelDreamtime - happens shortly after the return of the Palace ... awesome Wendy art Hidden Years #4, #8, #9,5 and #10-15 - single issues filling gaps and giving background information for the time from the return of the Palace until the main story lines SHARDS and HIDDEN YEARS start. Read before starting with Shards and the rest of HY! Main storyline - Shards ( #1 til #15) and Hidden Years (from #16 til the end) - run parallel and influence each other. Shards #10 / HY #24 and Shards #12 / HY #25 are directly connected - read the Shards issue before you look in the corresponding HY issue - spoiler warning! About same time as Shards and Ember's Hidden Years storyline New Blood #14-35 - Forevergreen Arc ... no direct connections with Shards/HY but it has necessary informations about the Sunvillagers' and Windkin's fate. Would be no fault to read New Blood #11, #12, #13 before you start the Forevergreen Arc with NB #14. Shards #16 gathers both the three story lines and the scattered elves. Here you should read In All But Blood - it starts with Cutter's youth, a story about his early time in the Sunvillage, a story centering on Skywise somewhen after the return of the Palace. The last is the important one: Full Circle closes a time and knowledge gap between the end of SHARDS and the following stories ... The Searcher and the Sword - following Cutter's tribe after Shards Discovery - follows directly SatS ... that's what would make most sense for me to read in row from EQ1 until "present time" (= The Final Quest) NOT on Digital EQ: The Final Quest PrologueFinal Quest #1-24more or less parallel with SatS / Discovery Wild Hunt - following Ember's tribe after the Shards War Mender's Tale (unfinished) - follows Wild Hunt Recognition (Summer Special) - continues Wild Hunt partly retold and more or less retconed by the Final Quest #1-2The Forevergreen Story arc is more or less continued by Worldpool - following some chars from the Forevergreen Arc - and Fire-Eye (unfinished) both probably "non-canon" Other series and single issuesTales from the Elves' wild past Blood of Ten ChiefsTwo-SpearWolfrider! - read it! The rest of New Blood is a mix of Wild Past, Long Wait, various Misc stuff ... many of it considered non-canon same for Bedtime StoriesElfquest Volume 2 - containes stories that are mostly listed and reposted in collections (ask if you want to know more ... same for stories I missed to mention) Kings Cross - a "What-If" / alternative universe story ... Xanth - something totally different There is no easy way to read through - you'll have to pick when you want to follow the timeline. As you will notice some of the stories can be found in several topics. The Elfquest Vol. 2 issues have several ongoing stories in each issue - and then and now a single one. Many of these stories are gathered in collections: Dreamtime, Wild Hunt, Wavedancers, Rogue's Curse, Wolfrider! to mention just a few. You can stick with the gatherings to follow my suggestions ...
